These new sighting sheets are combined for PID and marine mammal sighting use. That means the PID naturalists will be the designated data/sighting collectors. Other naturalists on duty will not need to take data unless there is no PIDer on board. All sighting sheets will be stocked in the interp kit binder only, not the PID case blue binder which will only contain the PID manual and maintenance log sheets. All completed PID/sighting sheets are to be returned to and kept in the interp kit binder. (Reminder notes have been placed in both PID case and interp kit binders.) A clipboard has been added in the interp kit for easy writing use. Please do not leave the sightings binder up in wheelhouse. Use clipboard with sightings sheet, then return sheet to binder at end of trip. As normal procedure, Friday volunteers please take the week's completed sheets to the SB Harbor CINMS office and place in the sightings envelope outside the office (on the shelf). I hope these details make sense. If you have any PID questions or concerns, please contact PID Coordinator Joel Justin: j_bar_j at hotmail.com Other CX Kit Info: The waterproof Eastern North Pacific Marine Mammal Guide is missing again. If you find it, please return. A new variety waterproof guide specifically re: humpbacks has been added to the CX/IPCO kits (donated to CINC by Catherine). Check it out next time on board. More CINP newspapers will be put on board the CX next weekend. Our kits are packed! Please remember to keep tidy so items will stay organized and in one piece, and please place blue whale baleen on top. Any IPCO kit questions contact Lisa @ mommasisa at gmail.com , CX kit deb4nb at aol.com. Thanks to those of you who let us know when items need to be replenished. We identified 6 Blues and 9 Humpbacks and there were a great many spouts in the distance in every direction. We were at Black Cod hole when we came across the Whales. In addition to the many whales, we also saw two groups of Risso's (approxmitely 50 in total) and a small group of commons (100). Captain Anthony took 100+ passengers on a 3 hour ride to a position north of Richardson Rock on the far western end of San Miguel. It was a long ride, under overcast skies, but was definitely worth it. The bottom line was: Common Dolphins - 350 - 400 Dall's Porpoise - 3 Blue Whales - 32 Humpbacks - 14 These are the official numbers which I entered into the log. There were far more whales, mostly blues, in the area than I was able to officially document. Spouts were popping up in all directions, literally 360 degrees, around the boat. Andrea said is best when she described us as engaging in "schizophrenic whale watching," because we were looking everywhere and seeing multiple cetaceans wherever we looked. The blues and humps were often in close proximity, not only to each other, but to the boat. There are undoubtedly people who have pictures which will show both species in the same frame. Yes, it was spectacular. The entire time we were in the area we were in contact with a multitude of whales. Since we had to pick up campers at Prisoners, we ultimately had to move on. The viewing was enhanced by very calm seas, so calm that the Islander was able to go as far into Painted Cave as physically possible. Again, the passengers where thrilled. What a day!! Learn About Remote San Nicolas Island Where Marine Mammals Outnumber Humans a Thousand to One ~Marine Biologist Speaks August 21~ (Embedded image moved to file: pic12780.jpg) Sixty miles off Point Mugu lies San Nicolas Island, the most remote of the Channel Islands, and a unique haven for threatened, endangered and protected species. Join marine biologist John Ugoretz on Saturday, August 21, at 2:00 p.m., when he talks about the state of current wildlife on San Nicolas. It is the same island upon which the legendary Lone Woman was stranded for 18 years, about whom the museum also has an exhibition running through October 17. (Embedded image moved to file: pic06730.jpg) The San Nicolas Island presentation at the Museum of Ventura County's new Pavilion is $5 for the general public and free for museum members. For reservations, call 805-653-0323,x 315.? The Museum is located in downtown Ventura, across from the Mission. Today on San Nicolas Island, marine mammals outnumber humans a thousand to one. Around 25,000 California sea lions are born there each year, which amounts to 60% of all sea lion pups born in California. The island?s breeding population of northern elephant seals accounts for about 30% of their overall population in California waters. Remarkably, the only terrestrial mammals are the Island Fox and Island Deer Mouse, as San Nicolas has remained relatively free of non-native species commonly found on other islands. Ugoretz is responsible for oversight of marine mammal monitoring and marine ecosystem management at San Nicolas Island for the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), Point Mugu Sea Range. He supports and coordinates a variety of intertidal and marine research conducted on the island and surrounding waters. Ugoretz has 17 years of experience working on California marine policy and fisheries management. A scuba diver and sailor, he and sailing partner Ray Huff won their class twice in the Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race, most recently in 2010. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... The 20 or so knot winds were against us and the 89 passengers aboard who tried to stay positive on the long, windy, wet, loud ride out. Lots of fun conversations between the busy naturalists (Carole, Rae and myself) and Cpt. Dave was manning the waves and the mic. Passengers were from all around the globe, some from Paris France who didn't understand any English (keep one hand on the boat, both feet on the ground, don't move around yet. phrases that were not understood and hopefully they had a safe time with no bumps). An 80th birthday was celebrated on board as well as a final send off celebration of a new marine deporting next week to Afghanistan. The galley and tables were "decorated" with plastic bags for those in need. The whales were plenty, no breaches but some tail flukes (including some blues) and a super friendly pair of humpbacks that hugged the boat for us. Their sprays traveled across the passengers, nothing like a misty shower J and were as close as they could be without coming on board. We were with this pair or they with us for a very long time, quite an experience for the new whale watchers on board. Of course the ride back was a bit of a dream.coming back to perfect conditions in the Santa Barbara area made our experience a bit unreal. Dennis was on deck, I missed having Bob Perry up on top. All the above, except the Common Dolphin, were spotted off the Ledge near Santa Rosa Island. Skipper Matt was concerned about not reaching the astounding sighting area off San Miguel visited yesterday, due to winds picking up in the channel after leaving the protection of Pt. Conception, so he turned southward toward the Ledge, after traversing parallel to the coast. We had seen the playful Common Dolphin about 5 miles out off Goleta. Seas were not as bad as feared, and only a few got seasick. Upon reaching the Ledge everyone was excited at the spectacle. Spouts were aplenty on the near horizon. The numbers recorded above do not include the multitude of distant spouts that continued after over an hour of viewing. All the cetaceans were very busy at feeding on the surface, as the krill were in abundance right on top for surface lunge feeding ( more like horizontal culp-feeding). Skipper Matt was often able to predict on the mike a coming "gulp" of a floating patch of krill! All passengers, including some from Spain, U.K.,Holland, Belgium,France, China, and Texas, as well as we CINC troopers (myself, Vivian, and Carolyn McCleskey) , were awestruck. Captain Matt was aided by Dave at the helm. Brook was very busy in the galley going and coming home during the 60 mile round trip. Bob Perry was very busy with his camera as was Carolyn with PID. Vivi and myself moved with dexterity up and down and side to side to inform potential viewers of the continuing new blows! This Friday the 13th was a grand day. Mat and Capt. Dave. There were no CINC Naturalists on duty today; we went as ACS members for fun and saw lots of the regulars we see on the whale watching boats. We woke up at 6am to the usual Santa Barbara fog but it was burned off by the time we got out to the SRI / SMI area and was sunny most of our whale watching day. Alisa Schulman-Janiger (the Killer Whale Expert / Researcher) did a fantastic job narrating the majority of the day. We thought her presence would bring an awesome Orca sighting but other amazing things were to be seen instead. Also on board was Christina Tombach Wright who does research on the Western Pacific Gray Whale population whose numbers are down to approximately 200. She had a PID book she wrote that has several photos of each gray whale (tail-top and bottom, body, dorsal area ) of this highly endangered group of whales. Bernardo and Diane Alps were there as the leaders of this ACS trip. After reading yesterday's sightings report we had high expectations of being surrounded by whales . We saw about 700 Commons after 1 1/2 hours out of the harbor and then some spouts in the distance. There were 3 "official" Blue sightings (within reasonable distance of the boat) with a total number of 7. The highlight was the 12 Humpbacks of which the super highlight was one Humpback that breached 6 times completely out of the water and lunged / head lobbed / chin slapped or some kind of head move an additional 4 times. I had to count the sequences of my photos to see what we actually saw. He/she was very entertaining. We also saw lunging feeding a couple times where the humpback came straight up out of the water, mouth wide open, giving us great views (and photo opts) of the baleen and tubercles on the head. We also had quick dashes of 2 groups of Dahl's totaling maybe 8-10 animals. One interesting note on sea lions, which were seen throughout the day or more specifically one sea lion. We did see a large group porpoising like they were being chanced by Orcas but again no Orcas were to be seen. One sea lion had a very large branding on it with the number 3150. No one knew for sure what it could be but there was speculation that is was/is some part of a research project. I wondered if it was a Navy Sea Lion that went AWOL? If anyone has heard of sea lion branding or knows more details it would be interesting to hear what the story is with Sea Lion #3150. It did look healthy and well fed, and there was nothing strapped to it! Then, almost home, just off Hope Ranch we saw another group of 300 Common Dolphins . Another awesome day on the water. I have contacted Joe Cordero, wild life biologist for the National Marine Fisheries Service at NOAA regarding these strandings. Here is the information I have received from him today: "Those animals were checked out yesterday by volunteers with the Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute. We have had numerous strandings of sea lions and common dolphins in Ventura County over the last month. We suspect another domoic acid outbreak as the culprit. No samples were collected from the recent dead sea lions or dolphins because of their state of decomposition. So we will not be able to determine their cause of death. To the best of my knowledge, there were no external signs of any human-caused injuries. Routinely, the Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute (CIMWI) collects urine and blood samples to test for domoic acid from live sea lions that are treated at their center. Michelle Berman at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History conducts necropsies and collects samples from fresh dead dolphins in both Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Samples are usually not collected from dead sea lions in your area. It could take anywhere from weeks to months for us to receive the analyses back from any samples that are sent out for testing." Mobley will present a special screening of the sanctuary's new film "Beneath the Rainbow Bridge, A Journey through the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary." On September 22, 1980, President Jimmy Carter established our nation's third national marine sanctuary at the Channel Islands. This sanctuary is now one of 14 special marine areas protected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It encompasses 1,470 square miles extending from mean high tide to six nautical miles offshore on each of five Channel Islands. "Beneath the Rainbow Bridge" is a new 29-minute high-definition film produced by NOAA to highlight the sanctuary's unique marine ecosystem and conservation efforts. The film shows connections between the land, sea, and humans as explored through the eyes of the Island Chumash, scientists, and children. Additionally, Mobley will discuss future directions of the sanctuary's research, education, and resource protection programs and the vision to protect sanctuary resources for the enjoyment of future generations. He will describe a new Ocean Science Education Building under construction at the University of California, Santa Barbara. This facility will include NOAA offices and an Outreach Center for Teaching Ocean Science (OCTOS) where sanctuary and university research will be shared with local schools and community members. The "From Shore to Sea" lecture series is jointly sponsored by Channel Islands National Park and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary with support from Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. The purpose of the series is to further the understanding of current research on the Channel Islands and surrounding waters. The lectures occur at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, 113 Harbor Way in the Santa Barbara Harbor and Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at the Channel Islands National Park Robert J. We spotted Common Dolphin and then some Dalls Porpoise. But it wasnt until we were heading to SCI Painted Cave that we spotted a lone Blue Whale heading East in the Gap between Santa Rosa Island & Santa Cruz Island. We observed the whale in a regular breathing cycle (a 4 minute sound) for almost 30 minutes. After a rough day on the water everyone was relieved to see a Blue Whale. Also spotted were storm petrels, pharalopes (sp?), shearwaters and a bald eagle (SCI) too far away to see the tag. Yes, you CAN call SB Museum of Natural History (SBMNH) for dead cetaceans in Ventura AND Santa Barbara Counties. But in Ventura County you CAN also call CIMWI for dead cetacean. They will go out check on the animal, file the paper work involved for National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and CIMWI will ALSO notify SB Museum of Natural History, who at that time will determine if they want to proceed any further. For dead seals and sea lions in Ventura County please call CIMWI. There are records being kept and important information to be gleaned for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). So if you call Harbor Patrol, State or City Beach, or whoever else might have the time, and now the money, to put towards burying the dead marine mammal, there is a very good chance that any information that would be gathered from that animal will be lost. After CIMWI has garnered the info on the deceased pinniped an agency will be called to bury the animal. Just this June and July I have been called out to get the stats for over 15+ dead sea lions, and that's just in the Pierpont area, a one mile stretch of beach! Again, for living or dead marine mammals in Ventura County ONLY, please call Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute at 805.567.1505 www.cimwi.org Staci On Aug 16, 2010, at 5:17 PM, islandkayaker at earthlink.net wrote: So now we have conflicting information on this. The weather was outstanding and the Ocean was calm. We made it all the way to San Miguel and then found a lone Humpback. After a short while Cap'n Dave decided to move on to see if he could find more Whales. It's a good thing he made that decision as he located some Whale soup. We had Blues on the right of the bow and Humpbacks to the left and they were all on the surface simultaneously. After about an hour of everybody enjoying the Whale show Cap'n Dave announced time was up and we would have to head home because we were not going to make it back on time, in fact hed didn't expect us to be able to make it back before three. Well, at that very moment a Blue surfaced right next to the bow of the boat. Let me tell you I was standing on the bow at that moment and it was the most exhilirating experience I've ever had. It took more than two hours ... but we were rewarded beyond belief. We were treated to both Humpbacks and Blues feeding, all 35 of those reported within 1/4 mile of the Condor, and dozens of others in the distance ... too numerous to count. At one point there were so many spouts that it looked like a field of geysers at Yellowstone National Park! Both the Humpbacks and the Blues were lunge feeding at the surface; rolling, pec slapping, displaying only a few flukes, vocalizing and giving us close up views of the gigantic maws extended with food. It was also great to see a cow/calf pair lunge feeding right beside one another. Add a multitude of birds, sea lions, the Pacific White sided Dolphins and a fur seal pup and you have one of the most wonderful experiences I have ever had on the channel. I led eleven passengers on a morning hike to Cavern Pt. and met the next boat to lead 33 more on the hike at 1 pm. Marty handled the busy Visitor Center. It was a warm day, especially after noon. The most impressive hikers I had among many, were 6 or 7 Nuns, who were all house visit nurses in Oxnard. They enthusiastically completed the whole hike, to a Nun, wearing their habits in the heat. I think even the usually observed foxes were hiding from the afternoon sun, because we did not see one until we were resting in the shade waiting for the Island Adventure to pick up a big crowd for the trip home. But, Mr or Ms Fox performed as if on schedule, casually strolling by everyone. On the way home a pod close to mega performed for us in their usually playful manner. Northern Elephant Seals now breed on the island in numbers approaching 25,000: making them account for 30% of the total California population! At the end of the 1800s only 50-100 lived on Guadeloupe Island off Baja CA. Two thirds off all the California Sea Lions in our state are also born on San Nicholas Is! Now there are 50,000 adults and about 25,000 pups. Harbor Seals also breed on the island. However, they are in lower numbers at around 800. The Navy has made the entire south coastline of the island, as well as Vizcaino Point in the west, closed areas all year for pinniped and sea bird breeding protection. Much has been publicized about the failed CA DFG Sea Otter relocation program to San NIck. But, according to John Ugoretz, in actuality, the only region in the state where the sea otter has been increasing in numbers over the past 5 years has been on San Nicholas. 43 now remain in island kelp forests. Abalone stocks around San Nick plummetted as they did on all the CIs due to over harvesting and disease, however, according to studies by Dr. G. Van Blaricom of the U of Washington, Black Abalone stocks have been slowly increasing at all sites being studied on the island every year since 2001. As for the Spiny Lobster, it is in very healthy numbers numbers all around the island. It is not an endangered species, most scuba divers who look for these lobster in California waters seldom describe lobster numbers in such a manner any more. As for birds: The California Brown Pelican does not breed on the island, but is commonly seen on the beaches and bluffs. Western Gulls breed in a large colony on the west end. The Brandt's Cormorant is a common year-round resident, nesting along the west end and south shores of the island. The endangered Snowy Plover nests on a few of the island's north shore beaches, and are seasonally protected there. Message-ID: Greetings, Earlier this week, before the fog came in and the winds picked up, hundreds of Blue and Humpback Whales were concentrated between Pt. Conception and San Miguel Island in an area affectionately named "The Cod Hole." This has been reported by CINC volunteers on Monday and Tuesday. The whales may very well still be at this location, but sea conditions were not as good yesterday and we had to divert to Santa Rosa in the dense fog. We were on station for about an hour and a half and the surface, and near-surface, lunge feeding on krill was non-stop as far as you could see in all directions. It was indeed NOT a great day to have been born a krill. The photos from Tuesday are now posted on the boat photo site for your enjoyment.
