Aloha from Islands Farther West, Of related interest to the coming Sea to Shore lecture, last week the Kauai Interscholastic Federation announced that night football games on Kauai will be switched after Sept. 15th to Saturday afternoons. Recent research has determined that the bright lights used during night games confuse newborn Newell's Shearwaters, which rely on moonlight to travel from their nests to the sea. The fledgling season begins on Sept 15th. Hawaii State Dept. of Fish and Game stated that annually about 30 shearwaters have become disoriented and have fallen from the sky due to light at one local stadium studied. The Hawaii DFG, in cooperation with the Interscholastic Federation, hopes this action will contribute to a public awareness about the Newell's Shearwater problem at hand: The need to mitigate the light hazard that has contributed to a 60 percent decline in their population since 1993. High school football games are a very popular entire family event in Hawaii, with stadiums filling to near capacity for most games. Aloha, Paul Petrich
