[CINC] Dolpins

Hi all,

We went out and cataloged all the information on the dead marine mammals from the new jetty to the center of the Santa Clara River mouth. We will let Ventura harbor patrol know about the sea lions and I am writting reports for the Natural History museum of Santa Barbara on the common dolphins. Everyone is just so busy and budgets are tight right now that we are all trying to cooperate with each other.

I know this seems like an extra layer of involvement, but we are compliling one of the most intricate data bases on dead mammals in California. Hoping it helps provide one more piece of the big picture.

I called Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute (CIMWI) todouble check and....

Yes, you CAN call SB Museum of Natural History (SBMNH) for dead
cetaceans in Ventura AND Santa Barbara Counties.

But in Ventura County you CAN also call CIMWI for dead cetacean.
They will go out check on the animal, file the paper work involved for
National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and CIMWI will ALSO notify SB
Museum of Natural History, who at that time will determine if they want
to proceed any further.

For dead seals and sea lions in Ventura County please call CIMWI.

There are records being kept and important information to be gleaned for
the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).

So if you call Harbor Patrol, State or City Beach, or whoever else might
have the time, and now the money, to put towards burying the dead marine
mammal, there is a very good chance that any information that would be gathered
from that animal will be lost. After CIMWI has garnered the info on the deceased
pinniped an agency will be called to bury the animal.

Just this June and July I have been called out to get the stats for over
15+ dead sea lions, and that's just in the Pierpont area, a one mile stretch of beach!

Again, for living or dead marine mammals in Ventura County ONLY, please
call Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute at 805.567.1505

So now we have conflicting information on this. Please sort it out and clarify who to call when.

Thanks,

This morning there were 3 dead (bloated but not decomposed) common dolphins

along a stretch of beach from Ventura Harbor Village towards the river

outflow. They were along the high water mark. In addition there were 4

decomposing sealions.

Is there an agency to contact who will investigate?

Thanks,

Lisa R.
