Bernardo Alps from the American Cetacean Society was on board yesterday,
and (a) he lives in that area, and (b) the ACS ran a trip off LA Harbor/PV
on Sunday. Apparently the San Pedro Channel is swarming with Blues,
Humpies, Fins and the occasional Minke, all feeding on krill just below the
surface. He reports numerous sightings of these beasts within 1/2 mile of
the peninsula, within good binocular viewing range. This is similar to our
experiences this week in the Santa Cruz/Santa Rosa area, but nothing like
what's been observed recently a the Cod Hole. A great place for putting
some glass on the PV whales is the Pt Vicente Interp Center, the same spot
from which the annual Gray Whale census is conducted.
