A very cool day, but extremely calm. Capt. Dave took the 15 passengers aboard, plus mates Dennis and Matt, and Natalie Swan and I, straight to 3 different sightings of a total of 7 feeding Minke whales south of Summerland. A few other distant Minkes were feeding with diving pelicans. Sea Lions and Sooty Shearwaters joined in the feeding frenzy. Capt. Dave then took us to Santa Cruz Island just east of Painted Cave, and Natalie and I had a great opportunity to follow-up on his interpretations related to the Chumash history on the island, as well access to the the island as a part of our National Park system. As Capt. Dave took us into Painted Cave, it was an amazingly calm, with only a 6'' swell! Surprisingly, the whole day we did not see a single dolphin of any kind! Maybe they have moved away from the 55 degree waters? Capt. Dave gave all the passengers the opportunity to get a raincheck due to no dolphin or "big whale" sightings. However, the passengers aboard, all but one from out of state, and including tourist from the UK, Canada, France, and Switzerland, enjoyed the day. They all were impressed with the amazing horde of sea lions we saw near Painted Cave the swam with us for a mile. Without using the formula we use for for dolphins, 5 underneath for every one on the surface, I would have counted at least 300! One little UK citizen, only 9 months old, while in her mothers arms, enjoyed this experience on the bow of the boat immensely. She also seemed to enjoy my serious interpretations I tried to share with her parents immensely as she laughed at me every uterance! Cap'n Mat pushed eastward in search of the grouping of Minke Whales which have been here for some time. Before we got out very far up popped a young male Sea Sea Otter heading East. We watched him for a while then headed off again in search of the Minkes. Much to the guests delight he found them. While we logged only five there were probably closer to ten but with the Minke's behavior it was difficult to get a fix an an exact number. Then it was of to Anacapa Island. Enroute we encountered the Long Beaked Common Dolphins. As we were approaching Anacapa Mat announced he could see a pod of Dolphins ahead which was a mixture of Offshore Bottlenose and Risso's . When we finally approached the pod we could only see the Risso's and Mat began apologizing for telling us the pod was a mixture. Before he could finish up popped a few Bottlenose to ride the bow wake. The longer we hung out in that location the more Bottlenose would show up until we had just a marvelous mixed pod of the two Dolphin species. The Ocean was so smooth today that there was absolutely no bump coming home fron Anacapa. The Whale The Whale... If you read a recent front page story of the San Francisco Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth. A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate ) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around as she was thanking them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same. May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you. And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude. I pass this on to you, in the same spirit. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: All, It was great to be back on Anacapa. It was overcast all day but there was no wind and a small east swell which caused the Vanguard to roll a bit out and back. I don?t think too many people new about the opening yet, but I was pleased to have 11 visitors along with Sarah Chaney, Carolyn Greene and Tanya Atwater join me on the island as well. Dee Dee also came ashore and joined my hike. The new stairs look great. They do stand out a bit more being unpainted aluminum, but they are very solid and much nicer than the old ones. The stair treads grip quite well, so no more slipping when they are wet from fog. They are also wider and not quite as steep so they are easier to pass people going the other way and to climb. There are 5 flights instead of 4 and you start from the opposite direction from before. There are also spacious landings at the top of each flight giving people lots of room to rest while still allowing others to pass. I?ve uploaded quite a few photos to my SkyDrive, They aren?t full resolution, but are perfect for viewing full-screen. Feel free to view online or download. Click on the link below and you should be able to figure out how to view or download. http://cid-b7f1ea3e50eba624.photos.live.com/browse.aspx/Anacapa%20Stairs Finally, I got quite a few requests for the new stair count. I?m sorry to say that we now have 4 more steps to climb, bringing the new number to 157. Message-ID: Dear Ocean Enthusiasts, The final public hearing of the California Fish and Game Commission related to proposed establishment of Marine Protected Areas off our So Cal coast will be in Santa Barbara December 15th. Location: Hotel Mar Monte. Time: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Suggestions: Supporters wear blue (not your uniform) and arrive early before 9 a.m. The area under consideration is from Point Conception to the Mexican border. A compromise proposal between conservation and fishing interests would set aside 15% of this area for protection. A vast majority of popular fishing spots would remain open to fishing under this proposal, but still opponents will request less protection from fishing. Some conservation interests will support a proposal for a higher amount of protection which they feel is a better science based alternative. Those who are privy to the positive marine life effects of MPAs in our CINMS and CINP hopefully will be in the voices heard. Certainly, the wonders of the Anacapa MPA that forms the stage for Channel Islands Live should be shared with those who have no recall of what used to be along or So Cal coast, as well as around all of our Channel Islands! Hope to see you there, Paul. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... However, neither article gave a calculated quantity of Krill in a given mouth full of water. That quite likely would vary, mouth full to mouth full, and be very dependent on the size and density of the Krill mass, the accuracy of the whale lunging at that mass, striking the more dense or lessor dense portion of the Krill mass as it swirls to get away. We see both large and small Krill masses in the channel, thus effecting the amount of Krill take, mouth full to mouth full, as well. I assume we are talking about an average adult Blue Whale, as a juvenile's mouth will be correspondingly smaller, yielding a smaller take per mouth full. So, from what these two articles present, we do not know the density of the Krill in the given mouth full, thus difficult to calculate, with any sense of accuracy, the calorie intake per mouth full. Somehow, some assumptions of quantity of Krill in that mouth full of water needs to be made, if they did not do so already, and it just did not show up in these brief articles. As we understand it the water is pushed out, leaving the Krill caught in the Baleen. These guys are on the trail, though. We look forward to more information as they gather it in. Thanks Catherine, interesting stuff, and love to pass it on to the folks on the WWs as we get it in. [Tomorrow's forecast is for reduced winds, by the way.] It was a day full of magical encounters with three different species of dolphins in large populations. Here is what the Condor Expressly saw: One huge megapod containing approximately 3,500 Delphinus capensis (common dolphins) including lots of very young babies Two large mixed species pods containing a total of 100 Offshore Bottlenose (Tursiops truncatus) AND 100 Risso's Dolphins (Grampus griseus) (One pod was near Arch Rock, Anacapa; the other about a half mile south of Middle Anacapa Island. Finally, we watched at least 1,000 California Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus) including a few hundred rafting and hunting amidst the various dolphin pods, AND many many hundreds of individuals hauled out on the back side of East Anacapa Island. Remember, we are the only full time whale watching boat on the Channel these days and we run trips W, Th, F, Sa and Sun. You never know on a day to day basis what mother nature has in store. But it is always an amazing day full of sea creatures and adventures on the high seas when the Condor Express leaves the dock every day at 10am regularly. And if that is not enough to excite you and your customers, the Condor Express is now officially on its "off season" ticket price schedule: $75 for adults and only $50 for kids. Get the best for less! Enjoy the natural wonders of the Santa Barbara Channel and the northern Channel Islands while the weather is spectacular. Sign up now and tell your friends. There should be plenty of spots available for our next trip, but the only way to guarantee you'll have a ticket to board is to make a reservation if you have time, SO call 1-888-77WHALE or 805-882-0088 to get your name on the list. Photographs from most weekends/holidays will be available online at www.CondorExpressPhotos.com Best fishes and have a WHALE of a day ! I'll see you on board... There was some jumping, leaping and mating; didn't see any "pink footballs" but some young ones. (disclaimer: I like my posts short, but there's a story to be told today). Headed west until Capt. Lee from the Islander called, "Just left some black and whites off Chinese Harbor". Capt. Mat turned east. Got to that part of the island with all eyes peeled--saw a couple of spouts just inside the cove, but too bushy to be the orcas we came for. Turned out to be the titular Gray whales. Unaware that the crew had something else in mind, the passengers were perfectly pleased with two mature whales providing plenty of fluke shots. Up top, all eyes were searching for orcas, with Captains Mat and Dave enlisting the skills of naturalist Dino Dal Bon, who has earned a reputation for being a great spotter. Ultimately, Dino pointed us in the direction of a 7 orca pod--six adults and a juvenile about the size of a common dolphin. With big rafts of sea lions everywhere and a couple of Grays nearby we anticipated carnage, but the orcas kept swimming toward an active pod of about 1200 commons off the east end. We cruised alongside the orcas until they picked up speed and charged into the center of the dolphins, who bolted like lightning in all directions. Awesome. With that accomplished, the orcas finally turned their attention to us, making some very close passes across the bow and under the boat, with tail lobs, rolling and some breaches by the calf. Spectacular. A truly marvelous day with fellow CINC Carol Celic and Dino Dal Bon, Captains Mat and Dave, Matt in the galley, and seventeen (!) very lucky passengers. Oh, we saw some birds too. On Sunday i led a group of Canadians, Germans, Russians, and New Yorkers up to Cavern Point. The Russian pre-teen had good questions, and at the island fox stop asked about endangered insects on the island. Grazing for a response, I talked about scorpions and such, after which his mom (who had been translating for other members of the party) said something like "I still don't see why we can't bring dogs." Then I told the group about the island fox (one gigantic reason for no dogs), but she seemed unconvinced. It wasn't until afterwards, talking with Ranger Tim, that I learned they had asked on the mainland to bring their dog aboard, and were told "absolutely not." They smuggled him on anyway, and when the captain found out, he told them they had two choices: someone stays with the dog on the boat all day, or you disembark and get arrested." So one of their party stayed aboard. . . . Protecting our treasures, Karen On Dec 14, 2010, at 1:56 PM, garydel at aol.com wrote: > > Hello CINCers... About an hour and a half into our journey to find the Orcas, we sighted about a thousand Common Dolphins. About 20 minutes later, we found the 7 Orcas. I think Captain Mat said he thought the group might include a young juvenile, an older juvenile, an adult male, a younger adult male, and three females. The Orcas milled around the boat, often coming toward the boat and then diving under the boat and surfacing on the other side. Once one of the Orcas came close to the boat and made a very interesting sound for about a minute that sounded a lot like ?blowing a raspberry.? Often at least two of the Orcas were spotted with pieces of food in their mouth. We spent about 45 minutes with the Orcas before they took a long dive and then disappeared. We went the direction they were going and soon found about 500 Common Dolphins. After that, we travelled West close to Santa Cruz Island. It was a great time to answer questions, show the Orca tooth and Gray Whale baleen, let visitors borrow the whale guides with the Orca pages marked, and point to interesting features on the island, including the hikers to show that hiking and camping is awesome on the islands and the wave cut terraces (AKA marine cut terraces) as a starting point to share some of the amazing geology features of the islands. Oh and the almost perfectly flat water and relatively warm weather made the day even better! Conception to the Mexican border. On a 3-2 vote the Commission adopted the Integrated Preferred Alternative (IPA) to satisfy the state's Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA). While EDC was advocating for Proposal 3, the conservation alternative which would have met all of the Science Advisory Team's guidelines as well as the goals and objectives of the MLPA, we believe the IPA is a step in the right direction. With approximately 16.5% of the southern California coast set aside in MPAs, we expect to see an increase in the size, diversity, and abundance of marine fish and invertebrates. These changes should result in healthier and more resilient reefs, kelp beds, estuaries and tide pools. Throughout the state's two year process of stakeholder meetings and receiving scientific guidance, EDC and our conservation partners were strong supporters of a science based network of MPAs. EDC will continue advocating for adaptive management to ensure that fish populations not only increase within MPAs but also spill over into areas outside of the MPAs. A complete map of the MPAs can be found here. Thank you to all who submitted letters and emails to the commission throughout the process and to those who attended the meeting in Santa Barbara- your grassroots support was impressive. We were treated in the morning to several gray whales (thanks to Captain Lee for the guidance), 3 of which simply went along the surface giving us a nice view and paying us no mind. The green.well it was lumpier than usual out there. Captain Dave did splendid work keeping us a comfortable as possible, but Laurie and Steve were busy helping passengers clean up and get to the rail. No need to say more. The afternoon trip saw no whales and perhaps even greater discomfort amongst the passengers but we were treated to the Risso's, more common dolphins, and a splendid sunset as we came back to Ventura. Happy holidays.and happy new year to all. Dean -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Day's Totals: 9 Grays 1,000 Common dolphin Started the day out of CI Harbor on Vanguard with 77 passengers, 50 to hike on AI. We found first gray before reaching AI, so the entire group got to see it. Not an active whale, but everyone got to see it. Then it snorkeled for a long time, we saw it once more and headed to the island. Found another gray on the back side of AI, but was really shy, so we headed for the barn. We also were visited by 100 common dolphin. Happy whale watchers all. In the afternoon, I raced over to Ventura Harbor for the afternoon WW and about 80 passengers. What a watch! We found 200 common dolphins just 3 miles out, then headed to the gap between AI and SCI. Behind AI we headed northeast and ended up with three whales. They showed themselves well enough for everyone to get a good look. Then when it was time to head closer to shore the whales surprised us with major breaching! Two of the whales were swimming very close together and suddenly one breached; not one, not two, but three times. Then the second whale breached four times. I could make out a white spot on the second whale's left pectoral flipper, so I knew it was not the same one. Unbelievable! So, we headed back toward the harbor with a brief stop to view the sea lions on the south side of AI and found 700 commons with at least 100 calves! They were very acrobatic and thrilled everyone. Just when we thought it was over, we found four more grays 12 miles off of the coast and they decided to provide a fluke show. Well, that was it! After ten years of doing this type of outreach and 35 years sailing, I am still overwhelmed by these creatures and look forward to the next opportunity. One more thing, on the way to and from ESCI on Dec. 26, we saw four grays, 100 common dolphins and about 15 Risso's. Thanks for the two days of WW ops to: Capt. Lee, Joel, Steve S.; Capt. Jason, Joel, Thomas and, Capt. Dave, Jean and Luke. Wow! Here are the stats: 10 Orcas 3 grays 750 common dolphin Morning trip: found one gray that flukes regularly south side AI. Then word came from Channel Islands Helicopter tours, they found Orcas from overhead. We went north toward East AI and there were four. They were eating a common dolphin. There were no other commons anywhere else to be found, so most of them had received the word! These four came near the boat and even did some bow riding with us. It was two adults, a calf and juvenile. Afternoon trip: One gray south side AI and another zig-zagging toward the gap between ESCI and AI. Both showed many flukes. Then on the north side of AI we found a mega pod of common dolphins and just a mile and a half toward the mainland the Vanguard said there were watching Orcas. So away we went and this time it was Cal. Sea lion on the menu. There were four then two more joined in. They came very near the boat and a large male then spy hopped! So fabulous. Happy New Year all. Scott, please correct anything you like! Calm seas, Catherine French Writer, naturalist Cfrench1366 at aol.com 805.570.0432 Sent from i love my iPad
