Ahoy Volunteers, Today was a see-forever day on the Condor: From Point Conception all the way to Point Magu! A very cool day, but extremely calm. Capt. Dave took the 15 passengers aboard, plus mates Dennis and Matt, and Natalie Swan and I, straight to 3 different sightings of a total of 7 feeding Minke whales south of Summerland. A few other distant Minkes were feeding with diving pelicans. Sea Lions and Sooty Shearwaters joined in the feeding frenzy. Capt. Dave then took us to Santa Cruz Island just east of Painted Cave, and Natalie and I had a great opportunity to follow-up on his interpretations related to the Chumash history on the island, as well access to the the island as a part of our National Park system. As Capt. Dave took us into Painted Cave, it was an amazingly calm, with only a 6'' swell! Surprisingly, the whole day we did not see a single dolphin of any kind! Maybe they have moved away from the 55 degree waters? Capt. Dave gave all the passengers the opportunity to get a raincheck due to no dolphin or "big whale" sightings. However, the passengers aboard, all but one from out of state, and including tourist from the UK, Canada, France, and Switzerland, enjoyed the day. They all were impressed with the amazing horde of sea lions we saw near Painted Cave the swam with us for a mile. Without using the formula we use for for dolphins, 5 underneath for every one on the surface, I would have counted at least 300! One little UK citizen, only 9 months old, while in her mothers arms, enjoyed this experience on the bow of the boat immensely. She also seemed to enjoy my serious interpretations I tried to share with her parents immensely as she laughed at me every uterance! Paul
