All,

It was great to be back on Anacapa. It was overcast all day but there was no wind and a small east swell which caused the Vanguard to roll a bit out and back. I don’t think too many people new about the opening yet, but I was pleased to have 11 visitors along with Sarah Chaney, Carolyn Greene and Tanya Atwater join me on the island as well. Dee Dee also came ashore and joined my hike.

The new stairs look great. They do stand out a bit more being unpainted aluminum, but they are very solid and much nicer than the old ones. The stair treads grip quite well, so no more slipping when they are wet from fog. They are also wider and not quite as steep so they are easier to pass people going the other way and to climb. There are 5 flights instead of 4 and you start from the opposite direction from before. There are also spacious landings at the top of each flight giving people lots of room to rest while still allowing others to pass.

I’ve uploaded quite a few photos to my SkyDrive, They aren’t full resolution, but are perfect for viewing full-screen. Feel free to view online or download. Click on the link below and you should be able to figure out how to view or download.

Finally, I got quite a few requests for the new stair count. I’m sorry to say that we now have 4 more steps to climb, bringing the new number to 157. Derek will be distributing a new narrative with the updated stair count as well as a new stop on the iceplant removal and native plant restoration soon. For those of you who lead hikes on Anacapa, I hope to see you at the restoration lecture on Wednesday.

Cheers, Joel...

P.S. You will also see several photos of the new native plant nursery and the new ceramic tile floor in the bunkhouse!
