Fellow Naturalists,
Last month at Haifa University I met Professor Dani Kerem, president of IMMRAC , the Israeli Marine Mammal Research & Assistance Center (http://immrac.haifa.ac.il) who said publication of the paper on the exciting gray whale sighting May 8 near Tel Aviv is expected early 2011. I'll let you know when it becomes available.
You can imagine my relief with the news tha Haifa University was spared from destruction by the four-day forrest fire which broke out in nearby mountains last Thursday. Israelis are enormously grateful for the many foreign crews with 39 air tankers which were largely credited with putting out the fires. Crews or aircraft arrived from Bulgaria, France, Spain, Switzerland, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Egypt, Jordan, the Palestinian Authority, Russia, Spain, Turkey, the United States and the United Kingdom, a twist for Israel, which has often been quick to send its own disaster relief teams and field hospitals to disasters around the globe including to Rwanda and Haiti, and sending rescue teams after earthquakes in Greece and Turkey.
All the best for a most happy holiday,
Marty
