Dear Ocean Enthusiasts, The final public hearing of the California Fish and Game Commission related to proposed establishment of Marine Protected Areas off our So Cal coast will be in Santa Barbara December 15th. Location: Hotel Mar Monte. Time: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Suggestions: Supporters wear blue (not your uniform) and arrive early before 9 a.m. The area under consideration is from Point Conception to the Mexican border. A compromise proposal between conservation and fishing interests would set aside 15% of this area for protection. A vast majority of popular fishing spots would remain open to fishing under this proposal, but still opponents will request less protection from fishing. Some conservation interests will support a proposal for a higher amount of protection which they feel is a better science based alternative. Those who are privy to the positive marine life effects of MPAs in our CINMS and CINP hopefully will be in the voices heard. Certainly, the wonders of the Anacapa MPA that forms the stage for Channel Islands Live should be shared with those who have no recall of what used to be along or So Cal coast, as well as around all of our Channel Islands! Hope to see you there, Paul.
