Historic Decision: Ocean Reserves Are "Life Rafts"

For Marine Species

The California Fish and Game Commission made a historic decision Wednesday by approving the implementation of 36 new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs, areas where fishing is limited or restricted) along the Southern California Coast, from Pt. Conception to the Mexican border. On a 3-2 vote the Commission adopted the Integrated Preferred Alternative (IPA) to satisfy the state's Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA). While EDC was advocating for Proposal 3, the conservation alternative which would have met all of the Science Advisory Team's guidelines as well as the goals and objectives of the MLPA, we believe the IPA is a step in the right direction. With approximately 16.5% of the southern California coast set aside in MPAs, we expect to see an increase in the size, diversity, and abundance of marine fish and invertebrates.

These changes should result in healthier and more resilient reefs, kelp beds, estuaries and tide pools. Throughout the state's two year process of stakeholder meetings and receiving scientific guidance, EDC and our conservation partners were strong supporters of a science based network of MPAs. EDC will continue advocating for adaptive management to ensure that fish populations not only increase within MPAs but also spill over into areas outside of the MPAs. A complete map of the MPAs can be found here.

Thank you to all who submitted letters and emails to the commission throughout the process and to those who attended the meeting in Santa Barbara- your grassroots support was impressive.
