Well, the first 8 constituted the first sighting, the other 1000 the second. The larger pod appeared to be feeding, or at least in an area of food as they were accompanied by a great many birds. Two Grays were spotted in the Santa Rosa-Santa Cruz gap. The first proved very elusive; the second cooperated with at least 3 displays of its flukes. Back inside the channel 2 more grays were noticed and then 2 more at a distance. These displayed nicely and the two pairs soon joined up. By the time the Condor had to head home, all 4 spouts were in close proximity. Passengers were from Germany, Australia, England, Indiana, Denmark and locally. The British couple had been on the Condor yesterday (1/2) as well and were annual passengers during the last several British winters while visiting California. Little will explain the impacts of feral cats on seabirds and other native animal species inhabiting the island. Starting in the summer of 2009 a comprehensive effort was initiated to completely remove the non-native cats from San Nicolas. Little?s talk will review the project?s purpose, history, and current status. San Nicolas, one of eight Channel Islands, is a U.S. Navy facility used for weapons testing and training. It is the outermost island of the chain, located 65 nautical miles southwest of Ventura. The feral cat removal is a joint project between the military, USFWS, and the Montrose Settlements Restoration Program (MSRP)?a multi-agency government program dedicated to restoring natural resources harmed by DDTs and PCBs released into the environment. Little, who has worked for USFWS since 1996, also serves as the lead bird biologist for MSRP. In addition to working extensively on the Channel Islands, she has done fieldwork in other remote places, including Ecuador and the subantarctic island of Crozet. She has a biology degree from the University of California, San Diego. The ?From Shore to Sea? lecture series is jointly sponsored by Channel Islands National Park and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary with support from Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. The purpose of the series is to further the understanding of current research on the Channel Islands and surrounding waters. The lectures occur at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, 113 Harbor Way in the Santa Barbara Harbor and Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at the Channel Islands National Park Robert J. We don't have resident Orcas, they reside in the Pacific Northwest, i.e., San Juan Islands, Orcas Island, Farallon Islands, etc. There is also another type of Orca, the offshore species that is somewhat newly discovered and not well known in terms of behaviors because they are found, way off shore. These whales were moving about 2-3 knots, staying on the surface through several breaths, and treating the Condor to many fluke displays. In my experience, these whales were about as unconcerned with the boat as any I have seen. They swam together in a tight formation, dove and surfaced together and were even visible below the surface due to the now clear sky, clean water and good visibility. The large pod of commons were about two miles back towards SB and stayed with the boat for about 20 minutes, much to the delight of all. Mat estimated that the calf was no more than a couple of days old. The pair was moving south, but the calf was really small ... maybe eight or ten feet long! All the references I have checked so far quote newborn length as 12 to 16 feet. Will keep researching this issue. Small group of passengers, but all very interested in what was happening and thrilled to be in our wonderful channel. We saw scattered common dolphins while crossing the channel, in the a.m. we dropped off people on Anacapa, then circled around the back side of the island and headed towards the passage between Anacapa and Santa Cruz. In the p.m. we picked up passengers and then did the same thing. Around the back side we encountered a group of about 30 offshore bottlenose dolphin. I have probably seen them once or twice before...but not like this. On both trips the dolphins did amazing acrobatics! There were HUGE leaps, clearing the water by 10 feet maybe? There were mid-air back flips! You would have sworn we were at Seaworld! I'm guessing these dolphin were about 500 pounds? It was a stunning display! All of the whales were either on the back side (and very close) of Anacapa or in the passage between Anacapa and Santa Cruz. No super close approaches. The afternoon whales were especially slow and the IPCO crew were speculating that perhaps they were feeding a bit in the shallower water close to Anacapa. Lots of great passengers who were eager to learn! Kevin Bailey and Scott Cuzzo were the CINC crew on board. Alex and Ricky Bobby 10 passengers What a beautiful day to be out in search of whales! We headed out to the east end of Anacapa, within 15 minutes we came across the first pod of Commons that fascinated the passengers. We milled with the dolphins for a little bit, then resumed our course. The dolphins were spread out across the area, there were dolphins with us for a good portion of the journey toward Anacapa. A few miles in front of the east end of Anacapa Capt. Alex spotted a spout, we waited, and waited. About 10 minutes later we spotted 2 spouts, I commented that they seemed a bit larger than a Grays spout. Humpbacks perhaps, since they have been seen in the area this past week or so? We catch up to the foot print and wait. About 200 yards from us we spot a spout and a pointy dorsal fin. I told Capt. Alex that I didn't think it was a Humpback, and then I muttered perhaps it was a Finback since the spout we originally saw was pretty large? I've never seen a Finback before and know they are hanging out in the Long Beach area. Capt. Alex and I were puzzled, maybe a Minke? So we waited with binoculars ready, and then the sound of a big blow was heard, it was Finback! A fairly large one that we observed, then realized the second one had disappeared. In the midst of this were about a couple of hundred Commons. The second Finback appeared, much smaller than the other one (bigger than a Minke,) but it didn't appear to be a calf and seemed to be doing it's own thing away from the larger whale. We watched the two Fins during a a few surfacings, no flukes were seen. About 100 yards from us there were about 3-5 Minkes in the area. The amount of dorsals in various sizes from the Finbacks, the Minkes, and the Commons kept us busy tracking them all. On the way back to the harbor we visited with the sea lions at the mooring buoy at Gina, where there were a couple of rafts of about 50 and 100. Had a nice time chatting with the passengers, who were all from the Ventura county area. What a great morning to be on the water! I'm was pleased, now I have yet another whale that I've never seen before to check off in my handy dandy "Sea Creatures of the Santa Barbara Channel" guide. Just 2 species left to see, the Orca and the Northern Right-Whale Dolphin, oh and that Sperm whale that was seen in the channel last fall! Sadly the afternoon was cancelled due to no reservations. :( ~ Carol Celic -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I live very close to the Ventura Harbor, close enough that I can see CINP HQ from my front yard. So close in fact, that yesterday everyone in my neighborhood got a reverse 911 call, telling them "to stay off the beach and jetties, take precaution about your homes, coastal flooding expected, through Thursday." Check this out NOAA SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LOS ANGELES/OXNARD CA http://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=CAZ040&warncounty=CAC111&firewxzone=CAZ240&local_place1=Ventura+CA&product1=Special+Weather+Statement On a side note, early this morning, the radio and newspaper reporters were combing the neighborhood, looking for a "storm/ocean waves" related story. So many people were out looking at the huge waves, large swells, very high tide combo, there were plenty of people to interview. At the end of my interview the reporter asked "any final thoughts" (look who he's asking?!) I said "after any storm we always get a lot of plastic debris and such on the beach. So after the storm is over, come on down to check out the beach and please pick up some trash as you walk along. Our friends in the sea will thank you for it." The sea was nice, 1-2 Ft swells all day, very little if any chop. Yet storm clouds menaced the channel all day and gave way to light rain in the afternoon. Yet, in the AM we came across one gray, quick spout and gone. Then three more showed, with several breathing cycles and a few nice flukes. A short time later, three more including a calf, all giving several nice flukes to the great delight of the 37 folks from France and Michigan to Castaic and Bakersfield among others. Afternoon, with a light misty rain already coming down, another 27 hardy folks were ready and wiling to head out to view our local cetacia. But the afternoon run was a dolphin run. First a 500 strong pod of commons, got every one on their feet. Yet on we went, and into another pod of 2000 Commons with abut 400 babies, many a jumping and a flippin,' in and out along the way. On back of Anacapa, and we came upon a small group of about 100 Bottlenose Dolphin, showing some rather nice acrobatics. BUT, gray, gray, gray everywhere, yet not a Gray was to be seen. This run had folks from Germany, San Diego, Texas, Ventura and Oxnard, and all the way up to Portland Oregon. Captan Lee, with Captan Steve, Lori and Paige did a fin job of it , not a one felt woozzy, sorry fish no offerings today. It was a solo run today, on the Naturalist side. More than 18,000 California gray whales have left their Arctic feeding grounds, headed for the warm waters of Mexico to give birth. A few weeks after arriving, and with newborn calves in tow, they head north again-a round trip of over 10,000 miles! The migration peaks in Monterey this week, with up to 20 whales an hour swimming by. Thirty years ago, the peak came earlier. Scientists believe changing ocean conditions, including loss of Arctic ice, is the cause. Whales can travel farther north to feed, making their journey that much longer. As the only true coastal whale, it's easy to see them from shore, especially on the southbound journey. Look for the characteristic "blow" as they exhale warm moist air; it shoots as high as 15 feet. Take time to enjoy the show. Learn more about the gray whale on our animal pages -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Ram?n Ar?valo, one of the authors of the study and a researcher at the Department of Ecology of the University of La Laguna, said. However, the experiments show clearly "that the beliefs about this supposed protection and mountain species' resistance to invasive species is erroneous," he adds. The study, published recently in Frontiers in Ecology and The Environment, and which is part of the work done by MIREN, has made it possible to identify the factors that make plants in these areas more vulnerable to invasion by other species. Among other factors, the scientists stress the ease of movement of propagules (plants which can reproduce asexually in order to produce new plants) as a result of human activity and the increase in environmental disturbance, the low levels of biological resistance of invaded plant communities, the increase in transport between high mountain areas that are far apart from each other, and the risks according to climate change models, "which will make it easier for invasive plants to establish themselves and reproduce," the ecologist explains. A work agenda to stem invasions The work carried out over the last five years shows that "invasions may be a factor in more extensive and serious disturbance than had ever been thought," says Ar?valo. The scientists also say there is a need to establish a work agenda to evaluate "not only current invasions, but also those that could happen in the future in mountainous environments," warns the researcher. Protecting against and above all preventing invasions could be done by means of experimental and modelling work. Ar?valo says "biological invasion is not a fact, but rather a process of species overlapping within a habitat, which means prevention is much more effective and viable than eradication." We have a small number of dedicated CINC volunteers already trained to assist with MERITO and LiMPETS field trips, and would like to extend training opportunities to all current volunteers as we have a busy field season ahead. You would be learning specifics about the MERITO program, including sandy and rocky beach monitoring (LiMPETS), plant restoration, water quality testing and more. Attached is a workshop agenda. Please RSVP to me if you are interested and note that it is a week from this Saturday in Carpinteria. *You do Not have to know Spanish to volunteer for the MERITO program, or to attend the workshop.* To learn about the MERITO program please see this page: http://channelislands.noaa.gov/edu/merito.html Thank you, Tina Tina Johnson Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary Ventura County Field Office (805) 382-6149 x100 tina.johnson at noaa.gov -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Jason, Alli, & Paige 25 passengers A nice morning here in the channel. First up was a small pod of Commons as we headed towards Anacapa. Then about an hour into the trip we were passed by a pod of about a 1000 more Commons who were on their way to have brunch to the south east. We then headed into the gap between Anacapa & Santa Cruz. Where we hit the whale jackpot. There were 3 groups of Grays 2-3-2. We stayed with the threesome who were on the surface more and at one point they approached us within 20 feet. One of them had a very distinct patch near its dorsal ridge, but wasn't the infamous Patch, as this whales patch was on the left side. We were treated to some great views and lots of flukes. We then headed to the front of Anacapa and checked out the east end where there were about a dozen nesting pelicans and a cruise by Arch Rock. On the way back to Channel Islands Harbor we passed through another pod of about 500 Commons. A nice morning and early afternoon on the water.
