From ppetrich39 at hotmail.com Mon Nov 1 07:12:00 2010 From: ppetrich39 at hotmail.com (Paul Jr. Petrich) Date: Mon, 1 Nov 2010 07:12:00 -0700 Subject: [CINC] shark attack statistics vs Halloween Message-ID: Ocean and beach enthusiasts, Saturday night I witnessed a sick take on the recent tragic shark attack on a UCSB student as a Halloween shark costume showed up at a Halloween party I attended. Hopefully, such was not the case with the trick or treat costumes that showed up at your doors? Last week, Peter Howorth, in the Santa Barbara News Press, presented the real statistics about shark attacks along the Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo coastline that should clarify the real dangers swimmers face along our most common beaches. Ventura County boasts only two shark attacks from 1900 to the present. The first of these attacks was on a scuba diver on the back side of San Nicolas Island in 1992, Another attack was on a swimmer near Faria Beach in 2007. Both attacks resulted in minor foot injuries. The identity of the type of sharks remains unknown. In Santa Barbara County, no one has ever been attacked south of Gaviota (really east of Gaviota) where Pacific Coast Highway turns inland toward Buellton. Ten confirmed attacks in Santa Barbara County since 1900 have occurred in more remote locations, where pinnipeds are numerous. Pinnipeds are a favorite food for White Sharks. Four of these attacks took place off Castle Rock at San Miguel Island, the Channel Island farthest northwest. The other six attacks, including this last tragic attack at Surf Beach, occurred in an area stretching from near Point Conception north to Purisima Point, inside Vandenberg Air Force Base. These northern beaches of more remote Santa Barbara County are the only mainland shores in the county where shark attacks have occurred. San Luis Obispo County has recorded six confirmed shark attacks, and maybe eight. All these attacks occurred from Pismo Beach to Morro Rock in Morro Bay. Pinnipeds are very common in these areas as well. As stated by Peter, "All in all, the coast of the tricounties (for swimming) is pretty safe-certainly more so than the freeway." I might add, certainly safer for kids than trick-or-treating on Halloween, when they become traffic accident casualties at over twice their average rate. Keeping myth at bay, Paul. P.S. The real danger of poisoned candy being given to kids on Halloween by strangers is as bogus a myth as is the real danger to them from sharks in our local beach waters. The two substantiated deaths from such a deed, were later confirmed to be family cases of murder. All others proved to be pranks that imaginative kids perpetuated for the media, or hoaxes perpetuated by adults for the same reason.. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In the final analysis I believe the experts will eventually conclude that sharks are opportunistic feeders ? no different than other creatures in need of sustenance. To say white sharks mistake people for seals seems to me more like PC (Political Correctness) than true science. MISTAKING people is giving sharks more intelligence than they truly deserve. Yes, white sharks USUALLY eat seals because there are a lot of seals in the water ? thus seals ARE their natural prey. However, if there were as many people as seals in the water where white sharks hunt, my guess is they'd be eating more people than seals. Please, no harm/insults intended ? these are just my simple thoughts. My best, Don On Nov 2, 2010, at 8:22 PM, Debbie shelley wrote: > Thanks for your insight for the great whites. Calm seas and light breezes increasing to a light, no white cap chop on the return. Beautiful cloud work as the sun tried to peak out. Common Dolphin were intermittent most of the day with two definite groups of about 50 for one and 125 for the other. We had heard of a Humpback toward the gap of Anacapa and SCI but by the time we got there, gone. Not far from there we encountered the Rissos, leisurely moving about with seemingly no real destination in mind. Nice siting though and the folks enjoyed seeing them. One even gave us a fluke. Cruised to Prisoners, Pelican Bay, and beyond, with may Pelicans and Cormorants as hunkering down on the ledges an usual hang outs for the coming storm. Then the light increase in the breeze on the homeward run yet with calm seas, a nice day. Folks from Germany, Maryland, Texas, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and even one all the way from the Mesa area or Santa Barbara, California enjoyed a very nice day on the water. Liza Rizzo was my fellow as naturalist. Captain Mat, Dennis and Brook did a fine job of it as usual. According to Costello, intensive ranching over the last 150 years drastically changed the island landscape. Erosion of the newly barren ground created sand drifts that covered the 1850's era Niedever adobe and the Mills-Waters ranch that followed it. In 2009, Costello directed an archeological study of these sites revealing new information about who actually built the ranches and what life was like for those who lived and worked on this remote, windswept island. In addition, Costello will discuss findings that the Nidever adobe was a more substantial structure than previously thought. She will also demonstrate through aerial photographs how, in the end, some of the ranch remnants were covered by sands exposed from overgrazing. Costello, who received her PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1990, has served as President of both the Society for Historical Archeology and the Society for California Archeology. She is also a member and chair of the State Historical Resources Commission. For the last 30 years Costello has specialized in researching sites relating to California's European colonization through the early 20^th century. She is currently an archeologist with Foothill Resources, Ltd. in Mokelumne Hill, CA. The "From Shore to Sea" lecture series is jointly sponsored by Channel Islands National Park and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary with support from Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. The purpose of the series is to further the understanding of current research on the Channel Islands and surrounding waters. The lectures occur at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, 113 Harbor Way in the Santa Barbara Harbor and Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at the Channel Islands National Park Robert J. Within 20 minutes Capt. Dave found a bird, sea lion, dolphin feeding frenzy. Then, heading south and east the Condor passed the platforms and headed towards where humpbacks have been recently seen. Almost continuously, scattered commons were in sight. At approximately the same location as other recent sightings, 3 whales appeared and one, who seems to be somewhat of a pet, was immediately identified as "Rope". These were lazy humpbacks today, lounging on the surface, taking short deep dives and providing good fluke photo ops. The Condor proceeded to SCI where many sea lions, birds and more commons were seen. Then, after an encounter with semi-friendly Rissos, back across the channel and still more scattered commons. Passengers were from India, Germany, Holland, Scotland, Washington DC and other points; even some from the exotic port of Santa Barbara! Blue fin shark was a quick sighting for some on the port side. The Humpbacks were just north of Emma Wood State Beach, the breach I am sure could have been viewed by those enjoying the surf or beach, and just happened to look at the blink of an eye moment. Rissos were swimming close to SCI, very young group, slapping pectoral fins. It was fun to see humpbacks this late in the season interacting with the boat and also interacting with a few sea lions that just wouldn't leave the whales alone. The trumpeting was loud and clear (maybe a scolding to the playful sea lions?), Maybe the breach was an "ok, now, I just have had enough of you!". Who knows- but it was a great interactive day with Keith Hale, Vivi Teston and myself (pid) interacting with the 36 passengers . Capt. Dave, Dennis and Matt in the galley awesome and efficient as ever. Passengers were from all around Europe and US. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There was no land in sight and from looking at Google Earth I think we may have been over fifty miles from the nearest land. The bird was photographed at dawn by another passenger perched on the back of the ship. Here are a couple of photos I took. Bill Weinerth ignore the first picture. it was not one I wanted to send and I do not know how to delete it. = _______________________________________________ hannel_islands_naturalist_corps mailing list hannel_islands_naturalist_corps at rain.org ttp://www.rain.org/mailman/listinfo/channel_islands_naturalist_corps -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
