Message-ID: <8CD305CF6814F06-83C-1E536@webmail-d070.sysops.aol.com> A recent book, Philip Hoare?s The Whale: In Search of theGiants of the Sea may provide some interesting reading for other CINCers. It did for me! The author seems to approach his topic by entwining fourthemes. Whale facts, including biology, natural history, use and demise, focusprimarily on the sperm whale. But, there are enough references to other speciesto keep the title appropriate. The second theme is Moby Dick, the novel and the whale. Withthis, Mr. Hoare explores the symbolism of whales in history and the legendsthat developed from those that hunted them. These symbols and legends are oftenprovided by Ishmael, the sole survivor of the Pequod, who floated away from the ship and the whale on a coffin. The third theme seems to be Herman Melville himself as Mr.Hoare goes into some detail to describe his life, motives and psyche. On a fewoccasions I thought this was drifting too far from whales and becoming more ofa biographical essay. But even so, it was engaging and relevant. The final theme is the author?s synthesis of the firstthree. He does this with some autobiography and with many personal reflectionson his own psyche, on whales, and his literary relationship with Ishmael andHerman Melville. I enjoyed it, learned from it, and will recall it when onthe whale watch boats. I also want now to read Moby Dick again! Lenihan's research program connects local Santa Barbara Channel fishermen, university researchers, international scientists, and the California Department of Fish and Game in a joint pursuit to ensure the protection of these important commercial and recreational fisheries. Lobster and rockfish are among the top economic fisheries in California. Lenihan notes that in 2004 the lobster fisheries alone yielded 928,302 pounds at a value of over $6.5 million. That year, nearly half of the state lobster catch came from Santa Barbara Channel fisheries. According to Lenihan, traditional methods for assessing fish stocks have not provided enough data for effective management and are often expensive and time-consuming. Collaboration, a cornerstone of his research, provides a forum to share knowledge and experience between fisherman and researchers in an effort to support sustainable fisheries. For the past eight years, Lenihan has been an Associate Professor in Applied Marine Ecology and Coastal Marine Resources Management with the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UCSB. Lenihan received a PhD in Marine Science at the University of North Carolina, a Masters in Science at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in California, and a Bachelors of Science degree at the University of California at Berkeley. He has also done extensive research within estuaries, at coral reefs, at deep-sea hydrothermal vents, and in polar environments. The "From Shore to Sea" lecture series is jointly sponsored by Channel Islands National Park and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary with support from Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. The purpose of the series is to further the understanding of current research on the Channel Islands and surrounding waters. Naturalists Gary Delanoeye, and myself Calm seas, Beaufort ~ 1 Overcast but visibility was good The Magic: We encountered the small pod of commons just thirty minutes into the trip, followed by the larger pod. The larger pod was spread out over a large distance. A few looked a bit shabby, but overall they looked fine: big, energetic, and fast. It was a lovely beginning. People where taking pictures right and left. When Cptn. spotted the whales, everyone went out to meet them. One of the humpbacks went off on its own, but the other three stayed together throughout the hour and a half of observation. The Minke was close and in front of the humpbacks. Gary got busy on PI. At times the whales were traveling slowly while feeding at the surface. At times they came within 20-30 feet from the boat. They went under the boat and appeared at the other side. They treated us to beautiful flukes and vocalization. They were massive, lovely adults. On our way back to the harbor, we caught up with the small pod of Risso's. The passengers were relaxed and fully satisfied. A couple of them said the experience was "Magical". Indeed!!! Maria G. Apologies for the delay. 7 Humpbacks, 5 Minkes Many small pods, of Common Dolphin Many large patches of bird feeding frenzies. Overcast and light rain was the greeting as we left the harbor, stopping to say hello to the family of Sea Lions in residence at the outer most green buoy, and we were on our way. Don Gilles had PID this trip and Lisa Rizzo and I the interpretation. We gave our intro presentation, pumping up the folks for some good sightings and then went to rails to spot some blows. Seemed a bit grim at first, going a good distance and nothing but a few Commons greeting us here and there as we headed out to where the Condor had seen some Humpbacks previously. The folks thoroughly enjoyed the Dolphins, but no whales in view. We had heard of lunge feeding, so we were ready for some of the same, heh, heh, ... right!!. We do see this, but not always, by a long shot. Time went by, no whales, seas were very nice and at many points like glass. Great for sighting, if they would only show. Great, also, for folks and vessel motion issues. Folks on board came form from England, and L.A., Michigan and a group from Maryland. These folks, three ladies and one teen age girl were hard core Baltimore Ravens fans and had the game going on their phones and iPad against the New England Patriots. They were constantly torn, hang with the iPad or go to the rails with the Whales. They would be cheering loudly or moaning as the evenly matched game progressed and then went into over time. Then Captain Mat announced a sighting, and then some more, maybe two, no, ... five Humpbacks in the same area. Folks were up in flash and at the rails. Sure enough, at least two, and then two more in the distance. We homed in on the two and followed them as we could see they were on a mission, not fast but sure and steady. Another one on the port side off a good bit but certain a Humpback. Then the two, ... HEY!! ... we know that one, ... its ROPE, her big scare from the rope episode some 8 -10 years ago still quite obvious. What a nice introduction to the folks on board, as we explained who she was and her story. Then two Minkes, and another not too far out, closest I'd seen them in my four years. NICE. Not too shy either, for this vey shy species. Then two more a good bit off but quite visible to all, ... very nice. Soon, ahead, birds, a small kagillion of them, Western Gulls, Pelicans, Sooty Shearwaters, ... all going for it, diving ker-SPLASH !! Wings a flapping, squawking and crackling, up, flying in a circle and back into it. All of it, again and again. To the starboard side another patch, the same frenzy. To the port side three other patches, the same. Our Humpbacks knew what they were after, straight ahead. Four to five breathing cycles and dive, but not too deep nor too long, again and again, they were on a mission. And, many a good flukes were shown, the cameras of all kinds were a gerrblinking all along the rails. And then they were gone. We hung off the feeding frenzy, seeminly, of their choice, and we were not disappointed. Our two, were up together in a mighty choreographed lunge, sinking slowly down and then another lunger and another. We could see their mouths full and the baleen on the inside of their rostrum. Beautiful!! And again, the cameras of all kinds were a gerrblinking all along the rails. Chow time, center channel, off Ventura. I think it's fish on the menu today. Lunge feeding whales, birds all in a feeding fenzy, it does not get any better that this for whale watching. What a very nice show for the folks. Satisfied, Rope and her friend wer off to other grounds, and we hung in there to see more, but they had gone. Birds were still at it though, easily five good size patches of feeding frenzies all around. Captain Mat and crew did their usual fine job. Folks all, were definitely, happy whale watchers. Thing quieted and we headed back to Santa Barbara. Thanks a bunch guys, it was another fine day on the channel. Ken Tatro PS -- New England kicked a Field Goal in the overtime, winning by three. Sanctuary Advisory Council Leadership Award: ERIC KETT This award recognizes that, since the inception of the Sanctuary Advisory Council way back in 1998, we?ve had the privilege of working with a remarkable person from our community that has infused the group with passion and inspiration. A strong passion for the ocean and it?s care; a deep love and knowledge of the waters surrounding the Channel Islands; civic-minded by nature with a personal commitment to community service; a hunger to learn ever more about all things related to marine conservation; a willingness to step up and take on additional volunteer duties ? to rise to the challenge of volunteer leadership. Eric?s nearly 9 years of Sanctuary Advisory Council service has earned him the respect and trust of his peers, and leadership positions on the Council since 2005. Channel Islands Naturalist Corps Blue Whale Award: Joel Justin The Channel Islands Naturalist Corps Blue Whale Award was established to recognize volunteer service that is above and beyond the required activities and hours for the program while participating in all facets of the program. Joel has contributed 1045 hours to the sanctuary and park over the past year! Joel?s invaluable and enduring efforts have gone a long way in ensuring the preservation and protection of the park and sanctuary for future generations. In educating visitors about the treasures of the park and sanctuary, his dedication can only be described as inspirational, not only for the visitors, but also for other volunteers and staff. Lighthouse Award: Carolyn Greene The Lighthouse Award was established to recognize volunteer service that is above and beyond the normal level of commitment which is vital to the success of the program. Carolyn Greene is an amazing Channel Islands volunteer who contributes in many different ways to the park including the Natural Resource Division with land bird monitoring and vegetation restoration, as well as the interpretive division where she conducts educational programs for visitors. Thank you and I am looking forward to 2011! We are currently developing the schedule for your in-service meetings and reviewing your surveys -- in the meantime get out there and enjoy the beauty of the Channel Islands during the winter season. Denmark Finland the UK and more. The pod of dolphins was quite spread out just at the end of the dolphin viewing did the come together for a good show. The 3 humps where very active. It took a while to get settled on them. First they where a mile off the bow so we traveled maybe half that distance. Stopped to get a sighting and then they where off the stern quite a way out. But when we got to them it was a really fun show. It turned out to be two males and one female. After a bit of time it became clear that the two males where in a fight over the gal. It started out with a breach than the two males where bouncing off each other when they came up to breath. We saw that at least 8 or more times. I also saw after one collision one take a sharp turn and saw its pump its fluke 3 or 4 times as it turned, it was really moving WOW! Near the end of all this before we headed home you could see the battle scars in the head of the smaller of the two males. I could really feel the intensity of it all. This was a first for me. Thanks Captain Dave and crew you where awesome as always. Keith Hale -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Yesterday's trip was more of a treat than a trick.? The weather was perfect, Beaufort 1, visibility 25miles, no swell, no wind.? After a few small groups of Commons and some baby sunfish, Capt. Mat headed east and were rewarded by a lone Humpback, feeding and moving slowly southwest.? Perfect tail flukes shown on each deep dive.? Our group of 7 passengers were delighted and Cal and Peggy Meuser kept them well informed, while I had no trouble getting some great PID shots.? A brief tour of a few platforms and a little larger group of dolphins, and wed returned to port at 1400. Brook and Mat complemented the trip and we all had a very relaxed day !??
