The oil and gas production platform is owned and operated by Mariner, said Blaine Dinger, director of environmental safety for the company. He declined to comment further. We had not been hearing that the whales were still around, so as Jacob and myself headed out we didn't have much of an idea as to what we would be in store for. The fog was continous as we headed to the feeding grounds just north of Santa Rosa, we had been talking to Mat already on the Condor and he was closing in on the area as well. We hear one of the passengers call out that he had seen something in the fog, we pull back and circle in the direction of his sighting, as we looked into the gray, we get a glimpse of a humpback. This was a great start to our day with our whales in the mist, this whale repeatedly lunge fed everytime it surfaced, the krill was so thick that is was visible on the surface and you could see the phalaropes catching some as the krill jumped on the surface. We then started hearing spouts all around us, but couldn't see anything, we slowly moved into the direction of the spouts and had many pairs of humpbacks, blues and fin whales all lungefeeding on the surface, at one point every whale was up on a lunge feed at the same time. There was a fin and a blue that stayed together the whole time, lunge feeding in unison. The fog was slowly lifting and all the spouts that we were hearing started becoming these visual beings, we had been whale listening for so long, the whales were everywhere. It was quite a site, the whales have moved back into the channel! Hopefully they will stay a little longer. There has been signs in the water that the nutrients and baitfish were making one more push into the area, with recent sightings of pelagic fish again around the islands and large amounts of early season bait fish in large masses around the islands, and something has to feed the baitfish and that also feeds the krill. Hope the fog lifts again out there to see the true numbers. Anthony -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Anthony of Island Packers reporting Orcas. (!!) Nw of Anacapa. So we drive off opposite of our original planned direction. We found them! Probably a combination of sharp eyes (Dave!), instinct and luck, as you know , Orcas are not all that easy to relocate. We followed them for a while, one largish male, two females, one might have been a juvenile and a cute little baybee... very cute unless you happen to be a pinniped. There were some mini breaches and they all swam under the boat twice, almost scraping the bottom with their dorsals. Great sighting. When, who should I spy out ahead of the boat? It's Lizette, the sea lion, blithely playing with her fishie. And then Gunther the gull joins her, "can i play with your fish, Lizette?" Lizette says, "playing with my fishie, splish splash, playing with my fishie." Not sharing much with Gunther. The orcas are 50 ft away, 40 ft. away, thirty. I am just amazed that Lizette seems to have no inkling, even with the orcas so close. Flippity floppity, playing with the fishie. Maybe she is just teasing Gunther. So, I am on PID and I train my camera on the Lizette, - I have missed just about all the orca mini breaches because by the time they break the surface it's too late to snap. I take a few set up shots of Lizette & Gunther. ... I can just hear Cascadia Research now, "HEY, there's Lizzy and Gunther! But, why is Shirley taking pictures of Lizzy and Gunther when she is supposed to be shooting photo ID of the orca's dorsal?" Sure enough, whammo! One of the orcas strikes at the sea lion (it wasn't the big male). Snap, snap, snap. I look back at my pictures and i see Lizzette's little tail, straight up amid the white water of the orca strike. It missed her, and we did see her swimming back toward the boat. Happy ending for Lizette and Gunther. Whew. Maybe the Orcas weren't all that hungry anyway. Seeing so many Risso's was also unusual. Looking like sleek white ghosts, gliding through the water, we were off Santa Cruz. Mat & David & Denis, along with naturalists Brian Resnik, GAry Sullivan and moi. We will be looking through flocks of Pink-footed and Sooty Shearwaters for such sought-after species as Buller's, Flesh-footed (uncommon), and Manx (rare) Shearwaters. In September of 2002 we had a Streaked Shearwater just south of the Anacapa-Santa Cruz Island gap, an often productive area. In addition to shearwaters, this is peak season for seabird diversity; we will be looking for storm-petrels, with Black and Ashy (both likely) and Leach's and Least (both rare), alcids such as Cassin's and Rhinoceros Auklets with the finite but small chance of Craveri's Murrelet. Skuas and jaegers are around, and Sabine's Gulls are in town, too. Last year both Blue-footed Booby (Ventura County's first!) and Brown Booby were seen. And, if we swing close to Anacapa Island we have a decent shot at the American Oystercatcher that's occasionally seen poking around there - among the more typical rocky shorebirds and thousands of roosting pelicans, cormorants, and gulls. Plus, it's on the Condor Express - a boat that can catch up to those wily seabirds and was designed for watching marine wildlife. There is also a full galley serving breakfast, lunch, and whatever other meals you might want to have aboard. The cabin is spacious, comfy, and has big windows to check out what's going on. Sign-up details are below. Hope to see you aboard. Jon Feenstra Los Angeles Leaders: Jon Feenstra, Terry Hunefeld, Todd McGrath, Dave Pereksta and Dave Compton $125 Credit card or cash. Seas were light. We headed toward the the west end of SCI to where Matt of the Condor had seen five humpbacks the day before. No whales. Kept going west past SRI. Finally, just north of Prince Island San Miguel Joel spotted spouts. We had two blues! most of those aboard had never seen a Blue so they were delighted. After about forty five minutes the Condor joined us. We remained for a couple more breathing cycles and then headed off in search of other creatures. We found the humpbacks in the SCI/SRI gap and stayed with them for three cycles, each ending with flukes. The wind was in our faces and blowing at over 15 knots so viewing was a challenge. We headed for Painted Cave. On the way home from the cave we spotted the lone humpback; breaching, head slapping, tail lobbing, spy hoping. Of interest by their absence, we saw no dolphins. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... NOAA Fisheries Service is reminding boaters of guidelines and regulations for observing marine mammals like the numerous blue whales currently off the coast of Los Angeles or any of the other marine mammals that often live in and transit our local ocean waters. All marine mammals are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) of 1972. In addition, some species, like the blue whale, are also protected under the Endangered Species Act. Both federal laws prohibit the ?take? of any marine mammal except by permit or exception. Any actions by vessels operating in the vicinity of marine mammals that have the potential to significantly disrupt their behavior may be a violation of the law(s) unless such persons have specified legal authority or a permit under the MMPA. Violators may be subject to significant monetary fines and penalties. Mariners should use prudent judgment while operating their vessels and always follow the navigational Rules of the Road. The following guidelines are intended to inform the public on how to avoid inadvertently disturbing these amazing animals in their natural environment. These guidelines are not a replacement for federal legal requirements. ? Be alert and avoid disturbing whales and changing their normal behavior. ? Attempt to stay at least 100 yards away from any whale. ? Do not: o Move into the path of a whale o Move faster than the whale o Make rapid speed or erratic directional changes o Go between two whales o Chase any whales o Attempt to feed any whales For further information please contact Monica DeAngelis at 562-980-3232 or contact NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement Hotline at 800- 853 -1964. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This set a happy tone for the trip. At bout noon, we came upon the large group of sea lions, a first for me. Dave headed towards San Miguel Is., but the whales didn't show themselves. We then visited Painted Cave, and on our way back, encountered the large pod of commons. People were delighted. The paper's front page headline covered the ongoing local tour boat excursions explaining the natural seepage of oil that has occurred along the Santa Barbara Coast since prehistoric times under the title "Nature at Work". The next beach related headline of importance focused on the two day West Beach Music Festival. I am disappointed that the newspaper did not have the editorial savvy to link our community positive activism to the very essence of why these mentioned economic activities exist on our beautiful coast! Save the Mermaids of Santa Barbara showed the savvy to set up a presents at the music festival, but that was not mentioned by the paper. Summarizing the material they did print "In Brief": 1,073 volunteers picked up 2,287 lbs of trash at 93% of the 28 sites reporting in Santa Barbara County. 1,104 lbs was recyclable. The paper did report that a county of Santa barbara Public Works Department spokesperson extended these words of thanks, " we would like to thank all the hardworking volunteers for contributing so much to this year's Coastal Cleanup Day." Also in the paper's "In Brief" section, were a few words announcing two screening of films to be shown by the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, which also actively monitors the health of our beaches. "Big Wednesday" and "Riding Giants" will be shown at the Santa Barbara Drive-In Theater ( in Goleta). Admission is $7 per person. And, yes, the drive-in theater scene is rejuvenated big time in Goleta, mainly by the local college and high school set! (www.sbsurider.org). We had a large contingent of volunteers from a local church helping us. The Santa claus Lane beach is a beautiful enclave that is dog friendly. I took the terrain that was on the road side of the railroad tracks that parallel the beach. Cars and RVs park on the frontage road, then folks walk through some brush via numerous paths. Trash containers are placed on most paths. The Santa Barbara News-Press article "In Brief" I referred to before, listed a few odd items volunteers collected along Santa Barbara Beaches. However, it did not mention some that I listed. Shockingly, I picked up, along with other expected items, the following: at least 20 doggie poop bags, mostly plastic, but some biodegradable. All still had the poop in them! Now I have noticed these on my walks or runs along our beloved beaches in the recent past, but I tended to want to think the source was still out walking a dog, or simply forgot where they had placed the item when coming back. However, all of these Dog poop bags were thrown into or near the bushes along the trails while leaving Santa Claus Lane Beach. I think all responsible dog owners are on base with me when I think this is inexcusable. Leaving both plastic and the excrement is a very sad use of our ability to use logic. Me thinks the only solution to this growing habit will have to come from the responsible majority of dog owners. Paul -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Items collected: Plastic, plastic, & more plastic: bottles, cups, plates, liner, packaging, and bags! Also worn out clothing, rags, blankets, and old magazines. Observation: Most heavily concentrated areas of trash were the washes, ravines, drainage culverts, and brush hollows where homeless had stayed. Areas that will overflow directly to the ocean during rain and wind storms. I estimate that the homeless generated at least 70% of all the litter collected. I think much of the litter on the beach came from the past homeless camps. The feedback loop: The trash is generated by those who camp there because they cannot afford to (or don't care to ) live elsewhere. They stay till ran out by the man and then return later. The economic downturn generates more homeless and they generate more trash. As they generate more trash the oceans become more polluted and less productive, this has a negative effect on the fishing industry which has negative effect on the economy, which generates more homeless, which generates more trash. The result: More trash. ONE SOLUTION: Reduce plastic use! But Lisa did a GREAT job! Looked for the blues they saw on Sunday near Santa Cruz then headed west. Toward the west end of Santa Rosa Cpt. Mat spotted the blows and saw the fins, at first he thought they were Risso's but the blows were taller than that. It turned out to be the five orcas spotted this weekend by IPCO on the backside of Anacapa. The male was the one seen before in the Channel with the top of his dorsal fin gone. A large group of sea lions in their path saw them and they got the heck out of there! But the orcas didn't seem interested in them, so maybe they had reservations for dinner at the Elephant Seal rookery on San Miguel. I was especially excited because this was my first time seeing orcas in the Channel, and I got some good photo ids. Happy sightings!
