Coastal Cleanup Volunteers, The Santa Barbara News-Press managed to fit our hard work toward contributing to the ecological health of our local beaches and ocean in their "In Brief" section on page A5. The paper's front page headline covered the ongoing local tour boat excursions explaining the natural seepage of oil that has occurred along the Santa Barbara Coast since prehistoric times under the title "Nature at Work". The next beach related headline of importance focused on the two day West Beach Music Festival. I am disappointed that the newspaper did not have the editorial savvy to link our community positive activism to the very essence of why these mentioned economic activities exist on our beautiful coast! Save the Mermaids of Santa Barbara showed the savvy to set up a presents at the music festival, but that was not mentioned by the paper. Summarizing the material they did print "In Brief": 1,073 volunteers picked up 2,287 lbs of trash at 93% of the 28 sites reporting in Santa Barbara County. 1,104 lbs was recyclable. The paper did report that a county of Santa barbara Public Works Department spokesperson extended these words of thanks, " we would like to thank all the hardworking volunteers for contributing so much to this year's Coastal Cleanup Day." Also in the paper's "In Brief" section, were a few words announcing two screening of films to be shown by the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, which also actively monitors the health of our beaches. "Big Wednesday" and "Riding Giants" will be shown at the Santa Barbara Drive-In Theater ( in Goleta). Admission is $7 per person. And, yes, the drive-in theater scene is rejuvenated big time in Goleta, mainly by the local college and high school set! (www.sbsurider.org). Paul Petrich
