Overcast, breezy, calm seas, and wonderful people (a large group of 9th-12th grade students from Bakersfield). The 2 Grays were in the same area, just 30 minutes out of the harbor. One treated us to a powerful breech (I myself saw only part of the whale on the surface of the water, and heard the commotion among the passengers, my husband and daughter included). The whales were northbound and traveling together at a slow, steady pace. We stayed with them for about 40 minutes. Afterwards, Captn. Jason took us to the stairs at Anacapa, and then to spy on the California Sea Lions just around Arch Rock. At Arch Rock is where we saw flying the long, zig-zagging line of pelicans. Trip: ~ 200 - 300 Common Dolphins 119 passengers Staff: Cptn. Mike, Dave, Jackson. Naturalist: Maria Ornelas It was a lovely, breezy day. No Bottle-nose Dolphins at the entrance to the harbor, but we did see a lone Sea Lion perched on a buoy. Among the passengers, there was a group of 38 Juniors & Seniors from Viewmont High School in Utah. To everyone's delight, we encountered the Common Dolphins just twenty minutes out of the harbor. It was a good way to start the day but unfortunately, it didn't get any better in terms of finding whales or more dolphins. Captain Mike took us to Frenchy's Cove, on the South side of West Anacapa. We got close enough to the intertidal zone to observe the colorful marine algae, large mussel beds, aggregate anemones, limpets, barnacles, Ochre sea stars, and more. Most passengers perk up as we stared going around Arch Rock to observe the Sea Lions spread out on the rocks. Passengers were happy to have seen the dolphins and AI up close and personal. P.M. Trip: ~ 250 - 300 Common Dolphins 129 passengers Feeding frenzy of dolphins, sea lions, and sea birds Staff: same as A.M. trip The P.M. was as good as the A.M., albeit windier and colder. The boat was a bit fuller, Many passengers were locals, but also some East European, folks from India, and Persian people. An Asian couple with a little girl of 5 years of age, and another one on the way. The mother was really sea sick from her pregnancy and the rocking of the boat. She had no choice but to endure. Cptn. Mike took us to the South side of Anacapa to view the sea lions. We did not encircled the Island. This time, Mike took the boat further West of AI. It is there that we encountered the feeding frenzy. On board, there was also a frenzy of taking pictures. We headed back to the harbor in a very relaxed, satisfied, resigned? (at not seeing whales) mood, but as the passengers got off the boat, one could tell they have had a great time. The mom-to-be was feeling a bit better. Maria G. Noon trip: 12 humpbacks, some really, really big ones with plenty of fluking and one very nice breech. No grays, no dolphins, very few birds. Sarah Chaney, was there to train and lots of park people including the Channel Islands Live dive group, with Kelly Moore, Dave Stoltz, Josh Kaye-Carr and Laurie Harvey (all NPS). I may have missed someone, so sorry. Shirley and I spied a humpback on the south side of the island, he was mostly just snorkeling. We did see his dorsal and tale stock, but he/she was just barely breaking the surface - we were at Inspiration Point. On the way back, a handful of common dolphin came to ride the stern wake. Birds: lately, a peregrine falcon, juvenile bald eagle and red tail hawk have been taking turns scaring the Western gulls. No eggs yet, and so far little mating behavior to observe. Lots of fly overs from the pelicans in huge numbers; cormorants netting in the cliff side caves at landing cove as well as oyster catchers. Kat said that IWS posted that a bald eagle pair were nesting on middle or west end. Check it out on Facebook. The coreopsis, fusilia, gold field and sand spurrey are making the island gorgeous! In China?s larger cities particle concentrations of 200 micrograms per cubic meter (?g/m3) are common, and polluted air often covers tens of thousands of square miles, yet typical concentrations of Asian pollution measured in California are very low, on the order of 5 ?g/m3. - Pollutants leaving Asia at low altitude have a tendency to deposit a significant fraction of their mass into the ocean. (Releases to date from Fukushima do not appear to reach high altitudes.) - Only material that is lofted a mile or more above sea level has a strong potential to reach North America - Material that does make it across the Pacific is diluted as larger particles settle into the ocean and thinned as it is dispersed over millions of square miles. - Material in transit is also prone to be scavenged by clouds and rained into the ocean. - Pollution coming from Asia usually takes about a week to cross the Pacific (we have observed a range of about 5-15 or more days), thus it is likely that there would be ample warning and time to develop fairly precise predictions of the exact path of any large radiation cloud, should one develop. - In California, we commonly see dilute Asian material at elevated sites, such as the crest of the coastal mountains or in the Sierra Nevada. Additional Background: - The Asian material we measure comes from many thousands of industrial sites and power plants and many millions of vehicles. Material from a single source (such as the stricken power plant at Fukushima) would be extremely dilute when it reaches California. - The typical air flow from Asia arrives in coastal areas (such as California or Hawaii) riding over the top of the air near the ocean. In Hawaii, we see Asian material about twice as often at the measuring station at the top of Mauna Loa (11,150 ft.) than at the station at Haleakala (3,800 ft.), and maximum concentrations are about twice as high at the higher altitude site. - In California, we commonly see dilute Asian material at elevated sites, such as the crest of the coastal mountains or in the Sierra Nevada. Asian material is observed about 10 times more often at Mt. Lassen or at Pinnacles National Monument than at Pt. Reyes National Seashore or Redwood National Park, and the concentrations at the coastal sites tend to be about ? of the already dilute upland measurements. - Data from our very limited set of low altitude measurements elsewhere in California suggest that concentrations of Asian pollution are generally lower at low altitude away from the coast as well. - Finally, looking at the Chernobyl reactor disaster (the only other large reactor fire and release on which we have data), although the radioactive cloud spread across much of Europe, and a dilute plume was tracked circling the Northern Hemisphere, the areas of high radiation exposure and significant health risk were confined to a zone about 100 x 400 miles in extent. By analogy, it seems unlikely that very high radiation exposure could reach across 5000 miles of ocean from the source. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Best, Debra Herring (SB boat kit monitor) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >From Joel Justin PID Coordinator Mar. 31 Hi Fellow Volunteers, In the past, the sighting logs (both blank and completed) were in the large white binder with other resource materials in the whale kit. To avoid having to lug around this large binder to record your sightings, we have now provided a small white binder that contains blank sighting logs only. Please use this small binder to keep a few blank sighting logs in while you roam around the boat, or for PhotoID'ers, in the wheelhouse or on the flybridge. This will keep the other resource materials in the large binder in the whale kit for other volunteer naturalists onboard to use and alleviate your having to lug the large binder around with you. If you have a different technique you use to managing sighting logs while on the boat (like a clipboard with a rubber band around the bottom to keep the papers from flying around), that's fine. You may continue using that. Here's a quick summary of the process: If you are the volunteer who will be recording the sightings, get the small binder out of the whale kit. If there are any completed sighting logs in it (there shouldn't be), put them in the large binder in chronological order with the other completed logs. Make sure you have 3-6 blank sighting logs and 1-2 of the special otter sighting logs in the small binder and use it during your day on the boat. There are plenty of extra blank sheets in the large binder. And again, if you have your own technique for managing your sighting logs for the day, you may use that. At the end of the day, remove all the completed sighting logs from the small binder and put them in the large binder in chronological order with the other completed logs. Replace both binders back in the whale kit. If you are the last naturalist on Friday, remember to collect all the completed sighting logs for the week and put them in the Sightings Envelope located in the Santa Barbara CINMS office rack card holder. For reference, the large binder is labeled "Resources and Extra Data Sheets" and the small binder is labeled "Sighting Reports". This is already implemented on the Condor Express and will be shortly on the Island Packers boats. Hopefully this makes your lives a little easier. Let me know if you have any questions. To see photos, please go to my facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/home.php Catherine French __________________ Capt. Lee Fleischer and I spent a wonderful week on the Sea of Cortez and in Bahia Magdelena on the west coast of Baja California Sur. The opportunity for this special trip arose through Lee?s connection with Lindblad National Geographic excursions as he is an Expedition Leader each year for a month in Southeast Alaska and on the Columbia River. We flew from LAX and spent a lovely couple of hours in La Paz at an old hacienda (built in the late 1700s) turned restaurant, where we were entertained by Mariachis and the State folkloric dance champions who performed authentic dances from Baja California. We were bused to our 152-foot ship Sea Bird at the La Paz Marina and spent 7 days exploring the Sea of Cortez, the desert and sighting a variety of sea mammals like blue, humpback, fin and gray whales and dolphins: common, bottlenose and, vaquitas. We kayaked and hiked the desert and, Lee swam with California sea lions at Isla de Los Islotes. We had a hike and gourmet picnic dinner at a beach offshore of Loreto called Honeymoon Bay with an incredible sunset and made s'mores over a camp fire. After a striking sunset view of the land?ss end or Finisterra Beach at the tip of Baja?Cabo San Lucas, we entered La Boca de (the mouth of) Bahia Magdalena. During our slow cruise in the Hull Canal, we counted 30 cow/calf pairs and 17 to 20 individual adult gray whales in the 45-minute transit to our anchorage. The next morning we boarded 19-foot Zodiacs and hit the sand dune island to the west, hiking across to the Pacific Ocean and Sand Dollar Beach. The ?Pacifica? was truly pacific that day, placid really. It was so incredible to visit this part of the coast. I hadn't been there in 40-years and it brought back wonderful memories. On one of the days, we visited the island again and I had a close encounter with one of the island?s coyotes and got some amazing photos of the old fellow who had been asleep when I discovered him. He and I were both a bit startled by the other, but he just slowly walked away after rousing himself from his afternoon snooze. The next morning we had our first ?up close and personal? meeting with gray whales and calves from our Zodiac with a pongera on board. The only way to be able to view the whales from a boat is either in a ponga (little boat?usually metal skiff?driven by a licensed pongera ) or in our case, with a pongera on board our Zodiac. Mexico was the first country to protect whales from hunting back in the 1940s. This bay is protected as are the other two lagoons?San Ignacio and Scammons?from whaling as well as just anyone going to peer at these gentle giants and their offspring. We had three opportunities to get in the Zodiacs and get within touching distance of these wonderful creatures. A trio of cows and their three calves came over to us one morning?it was like a play date. First they let the babies come visit then the cows came in ? all three ? and swam back and forth right underneath our little inflatable! We could see every mark, barnacle and lice on each animal and recognize the same whale later with these patterns in mind. The biggest thrill for me was being close enough to not only touch them, but to observe the new born calves and moms touching each other and playing like human moms and babies do. It was a thrill of a life time.. Sincerely, Catherine French cfrench1366 at aol.com 805.815.3523 805.570.0432 mobile -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Working corps such as the Santa Monica Trail maintenance group and an archeological study group lead by Prof Glassow from UCSB went on to Prisoners Harbor, while most the rest where passengers destined for Scorpion Anchorage. I took 15 of them on the Cavern Point hike while Lola Lynch shared her expertise at the Visitor's Center. It was not a good day for visibility, and there was a cool wind on the bluffs. Scorpion Anchorage was protected and warm, and some of our "oblivious to all" fox friends seemed to congregate there to soak up sun. One highlight of the trip was the presents of Dan Muhs, the geologist who is currently writing a guide book on the geology of the CINP. He will be the presenter at the Sea to Shore lecture at the Park HQ tomorrow night. He and his research aid Christy were exploring a site near Cavern Point for fossils, where the caliche deposits are. On the way back to Ventura he displayed his find to Jean, a crew member gives a lot of interesting commentary on the boat's mike, and myself. He spread out over a geological map of Santa Cruz Island, clam and mussel shells dating back two million years!! He was also full of information about the diatomaceous earth on ESCI that re- crystalized into the chirt deposits that were so important to the development advancement of the Chumash culture on the island, and beyond. Swells were large as we exited Channel islands Harbor. Captain Jason asked everyone to be seated as he expected the ride to be rough. He said he thought the water would be calmer out by Anacapa and headed that way. Tough to interpret when you are asked to remain seated and the trip is so bumpy everyone is just holding on! As we passed Arch Rock we saw a few California Sea Lions and the kids on board were happy. We had a group of students from Pinecrest in Van Nuys who were very knowledgeable. Then spouts! We headed off East and soon were surrounded by whales. There were so many whales we literally could not count. We saw at least 10 Fin Whales and more then 20 Orca. No that is not a mistype TWENTY or more Orca. We had whales all around the boat and spouts as far as you could see. Orca approached close enough we could see the white side markings. One child was so excited he kept telling me "It looks like a killer whale!" "Look there is another killer whale!" There were times as you looked out over the water you would see several dorsal fins as they swam upwards. It remained a G rated experience for the entire hour we stayed with the whales. It was the most amazing experience. Several passengers commented it was like being in a National Geographic film. The crew was wonderful ... keeping comments to a minimum letting all just enjoy the experience. Lots of questions after. The crew mentioned over and over again how exceptional and unusual this was. For the record, as described in Marla Daily's Santa Barbara Island, in 1916 Buster Hyder went down to Guadalupe Island in Mexico with his parents to send bones of Elephant Seals back to the UC in Berkeley. Guadeloupe Island was the only place they were found to exist by 1900. Buster's dad brought one back alive and put it on display in Long Beach at the old amusement park there. They lost track of another one brought back alive. We faced our strongest winds in search of humpback whales in the 9am trip and found a lone humpback who came up relatively close to the boat. We had seen 50 common dolphins on the way out.? Because of winds, we went in search of gray whales on the noon trip and experienced some close encounters with 5 Bottlenose dolphins first, near Goleta Pier and then on the beach just past Coal Oil Point and Michael Smith and his counters, we spent time watching a cow/calf pair. They had approached/or were approached by a small motor boat when we arrived. Then they seemed to go backwards and toward shore (NE) and stopped. The calf was rolling around and spy hopped and showed its head several times. We enjoyed watching them for quite some time. They were very close to the shore. Conditions? We headed out a bit further on the way back in search of other marine mammals.? Our 3pm trip was a similar route from our 12 noon trip. We found another Cow-Calf pair with another boat near them. They were traveling. The other boat left and we traveled with them for a while. We found them prior to Goleta Point and traveled with them to Coal Oil Point. On the way home, we went a bit further out int the Channel, again in search of other marine mammals and ended up finding the coastal Bottlenose right near the entrance to the Harbor. The extensive review said the research article will explain how the recovering CI Fox populations keep hantavirus at bay indirectly- as these predators thin out the Deer Mice populations. The study started out focusing on the interaction of Deer Mice with the island vegetation, but got hijacked by the surprising fox predation findings. Maybe someone out there can share the article on line with us when it comes out? Linda Taylor (CINC class of '11) and I had a fun time aboard the DD with Capt. Michael and crew Olivia. The AM trip was a bit rougher than the PM trip with many passengers lulled asleep on the way back. The brief gray whale sighting on the port side of the boat was missed by us naturalists due to being distracted by all the birds! In addition to pelicans, cormorants, gulls, terns, grebes, and a lone Brant goose, there were flocks of Pacific loons zooming by. There might have been a flock of Brants although not confirmed. Since the two UCSB students from Norway saw the grays (most likely a cow/calf pair), I got them involved in the sighting report / data collecting. It's fun to involve passengers while explaining our "opportunistic research." Linda captured the attention of a 6 yr. boy on the PM trip, who later recited everything he learned. We value those teachable moments! Folks aboard were from Sweden, London, Spain, Germany, some from California, two from SB. For those who want to brush up on birds or other topics, check out the links below for CINC SkyDrive Archives. You can find archived lectures and 2011 training manual info. There is a wonderful lecture by Joan Lentz who talks about birds and migrations. http://cid-a4b2402948fa1ee1.office.live.com/documents.aspx http://www.nps.gov/chis/supportyourpark/volunteer-schedules.htm For extra bird education, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History has two helpful "self-serve" visual screens in the Bird Hall, where you can sit and study birds at your leisure. We had 4 amazing humpbacks that you would have thought had been trained for our entertainment. for at least 1 full hour. These whales put on a show that should have gotten the academy award. All four whales would be right below the surface so we could watch them below the water, cruising back and forth under the boat, they never went more than 100 yards from the boat. At one time they all four spy hopped at the same time and all did a full pivot around. The large male had a lot of barnacles on his chin, look like he had a beard. Some of the passengers named him Barnacle Bill. No one wanted to leave, even an 8 year old boy said it was the most beautiful thing he ever saw. Thanks to Laura and the crew Captain Matt (who also said it was one of the most amazing sight he has see), Dennis and Brooke and me Debbie and again to those great humpbacks. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We saw Brown Pelicans and Sea Lions as we left the harbor. It is always so much fun to ride on the DD. Many young human ones were happily getting wet. The day was windy but sunny and warm. We coasted along and spotted shy Grays at a distance a couple of times, but the only one I logged-in was in the kelp forest near the Light house, since it was seen by many, including the captain. No whales was an opportunity for me to talk to small groups of passengers about these awesome, mesmerizing animals, their amazing migration journey, and their habitats both in the cold, icy north, and warm southern lagoons of Baja California. The day was gorgeous and the people were friendly and inquisitive. The Captain asked for a show of hands indicating they had not seen the Gray surface. Many raised their hand, but at the end of the trip, all were given "rain" coupons for another day. That was a nice gesture and the passengers appreciated it. We all left the boat feeling relaxed and happy after a wonderful few hours out in the SB Channel. Maria G.
