For those shying away from reading about stupid violence, this article also has some amazing info about the amazing come-back of this pinniped from assumed extinction in the1880s. For the record, as described in Marla Daily's Santa Barbara Island, in 1916 Buster Hyder went down to Guadalupe Island in Mexico with his parents to send bones of Elephant Seals back to the UC in Berkeley. Guadeloupe Island was the only place they were found to exist by 1900. Buster's dad brought one back alive and put it on display in Long Beach at the old amusement park there. They lost track of another one brought back alive. Paul
