The whales had moved west toward in front of San Miguel (12 miles away) and we traveled 30 miles. We had very clear views of Santa Rosa and then San Miguel Island. Hope I got this all right!? We had a "friendly approach" by a single humpback that went under the boat several times and then surfaced upside down right next to the boat and really put on quite a show for quite some time popping up close to the boat in various locations. It fluked, and then did it again in a slightly different location after it surfaced after its deeper dive.? Crew: Capt Mat, Dennis and Brooke Naturalists: Kevin Bailey, Vivi Teston, and Laura Shelton Have a great week. The calendar has been full of openings for PID and Non PID naturalist positions. Captain Mat did a great job of handling the boat to minimize the effects as much as possible and kept us informed regarding the distance to the whales. We had many sick passengers, but when we finally reached the whales all aboard were very excited. We were immediately approached by a humpback that apparently recognized the boat. The whale rewarded us with a 30-45 minute show including close approaches, blows next to the boat, shows of its pec fins. The whale also passed under the boat several times giving both sides of the boat equal time. There were a total of 5 humpbacks in the area contributing to the show. Two blues provided the grand finale before heading for home. We had 110 passengers from Switzerland, France, The Netherlands, England, Belgium, Arizona, New York, California, Oregon. Mat, Dennis and Brooke took out 100 passengers on this foggy trip to the vicinity of Santa Rosa Island. Naturalists Linda Taylor, Vic Cox and Morgan Coffey (on PID) engaged the U.S. and international passengers during a day that began as a medium high marine layer and thinned out as we headed south but hung around until we returned to the mainland. Nonetheless visibility was sufficient to spot the above marine mammals, plus the usual pinniped suspects. The Dall's porpoise were feeding when we came upon them and provided a small ballet in black and white. The other notable encounter came when a young humpback came up near the stern and inspected the slow-moving CX up close. The skipper shifted into neutral and cut back his engines to allow the perhaps 30-footer to circle us. East of where the whales have been lately. Closer to Santa Cruz Island. Crew: Captain Dave, Dennis and Brooke Naturalist: Laura Shelton Highlights: Great trip. Good conditions. Only a handful of "really uncomfortable" folks and they all seemed to be able to enjoy the whales. Good visibility despite some lingering fog and smaller swell and less wind than expected.? One lady, who smiled despite being sick and even while being sick, was in the back of the boat with one other individual and no one else, and a single humpback that had gone under the boat, spyhopped and she and this other passenger were eye to eye with this whale briefly.? One other story, a woman who has been whale watching several times mentioned that she really wanted to see a dolphin. When I came by towards the end, I commented on the great whale sightings and said I bet you will see dolphins next time. She claimed that she and another man definitely saw a lone dolphin out in the distance. ?I decided to just be excited for her and not ask too many questions. So there you go, even on a boat full of people (87-lots of SB and Europeans, etc) you can have your own unique experience.? We had a lone whale with an interesting dorsal fin (it looked slightly "broken" and had a white coloring around it...) that was our "most friendly" approach and the subject of the above spyhop encounter. Brooke thought it may have been the same single whale that went under the boat and surfaced near the boat the day before. 2 other whales turned and approached the boat briefly as well.? Lots of surface time and a fluke by a blue whale were also enjoyed by all.? Thanks, Laura -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Everyone was very excited and eager to get a closer look at the Blues. In consequent sightings they remained elusive, not letting us get too close, but close enough to see the distance between their blowholes and fins, so the passengers had a great time extrapolating where they ended and began. Captain Mat did a great job, as usual, in getting us to the wildlife. On our return trip we took a couple of detours to watch the Dall's porpoises and the Mola Mola, much to everyone's delight. The comments from the passengers as they debarked indicated that this day did, indeed, meet all expectations. Passengers were from Germany, Sweden, Mexico, United Kingdom, Spain, Turkey, England, Washington D.C., Washington State, and many from California. Cetacaens: ... 11 Humpbacks, ... 8 Blues, (with many spouts of both, away and all around us), ... 1103 (3, 200, 400 & 500) Common Dolphin Birds: ... Pink Footed Pigeon Gillamonts ... Sooty Shearwaters ... Brown Pelicans ... Cormorants ... Sabine's Gull ... Marbled Murrelet ... Cassin's Auklet Pinnipeds: ... Several Sea Lions in and out around the Humpbacks and her and there all across the channel. Shot of the day: ... One outstanding Blue Fluke, very high, full rear view, with underside colorations, slowly rising and descending. I would say it was the best fluke of a Blue I have seen in my five years on the Channel. Just spectacular!! A big Ooohh and Auuhh went up as it cycled through it's one time showing. Second best treat: Two full breaches of a Humpback about a quarter mile ahead, with a pec slapping Humpback just a little bit closer. Both definitely visible to the eye, but a good bit far for a decent photo, if you were ready. Foggy to overcast for most of the day, giving us calm seas all day, yet a few felt the queezzies or more. Well beyond the last buoy and its resident family of Sea Loins wishing us fair seas, three Commons gave us a nice show, yet it was a good ways before we saw the next set of 200. This group was quite entertaining, as they usually are, with many babies in the mix. Moving on, and on we came on the second set of commons and we played with them by running an "S" pattern in the sea for them to surf the wake. And surf the did, to the great joy of the folks on board. Well beyond them, and off of Santa Rosa, now, we came on four Humpbacks off our starboard bow, just surfacing and quite obviously feeding. They lay there, taking in air before another dive to about 320 feet and a nice line of Krill. Then to our stern, two adult Blues popped up and were moving right along, yet cycling through there breathing time before diving, quite likely to the same Krill line. Then spouts were visible all over the place, Blues and Humpbacks. Again we had the Humpback Blues show now in full display. Off in the distance was the Condor, stationary with their sitings. We did not need to move as we had quite a showing right were we were. Again, we had our choice of which ones to watch. We were there for a very long time as this show was in it for the duration. Toward the end of the time we had, before the need to move on, came the only Blue Whale Fluke, and what a beauty it was. Directly off our stern, several folks got themselves a very rare and classic fluke shot of a Blue. Rich in color, hight and slow duration, it just does not get any better than that. For this whole time we had many from which to choose. Finally it was time to move off and head for Painted Cave, cruising all along the beautiful cliff shores of Santa Cruz Island. Bird were out in full force as the overcast began to slowly lift. Painted cave was seemingly extra spectacular this day, for some reason the colors really came out. The folks got the usual treat of Captain Jimmy taking in far, far, far. Coming out and making the turnaround, we were all surprised to see a Western Gull floating on the water, attempting to take a Pigeon Guillemot, right next to the boat. The Gull kept picking and grabbing the Guillemot it with its bill, as the Guillemot struggled ferociously to get free. This went on for some time, really about three or four minutes, but seemed for ever, as the Guillemot would seem to get away, and the gull would grab it again and attempt to drown it, again and again and again. Finally the little guy did get away and the Gull just seemed to be OK with it. Natures way, but we did not think that gulls went after smaller birds, rather fish is their main menu. (any info on this would be appreciated) On our return we came on the largest group of Commons and the folks were still thrilled to see the show. Over all, another very fine day of Whale Watching, the folks were quit satisfied. We had folks from Chechoslovakia (spelling ??), Omaha, and many locals, enjoying this fine show of Cetacea at sea. Captan Jimmy, Crew of Captain Michael and Jean, with the wonderful Debbie Shelley my side kick for the day. All did a fine job of interpretation, especially Captain Jimmy's and Jean's very informative narration across the day. Gentle winds, mellow seas, and keep some fresh salt air near you, always. But I think the key you reflect upon is the "asking questions" part, whether it is on the way home or on the trail. Multi media, and its encouraging multi tasking, too often short changes effort at making connections, and then seeing the bigger picture. Many experts, who started our new age, agree that far too many of the new generation shy away from "getting on the boat, or getting on the trail" where questions can be focused on real people and a real issue- "seeking connections." The challenge is to get them out there first, and get those questions coming, would you agree? This is what Birds of North America Online, http://bna.birds.cornell.edu/bna/species/174, says about the main food sources of the Western Gull: ?A generalist predator on both pelagic and intertidal marine invertebrates and fishes; also eggs, chicks, and adults of other seabirds and eggs and young of conspecifics and congeners. An opportunistic scavenger on fish, carrion, and human refuse.? Most gulls are very aggressive and will take any bird that is injured, sick or otherwise incapacitated, even birds that are larger than the gull. The guillemot was probably a fledgling that had just become independent from its parents but was not yet fully able to flee or defend itself, predators have an uncanny ability to detect that. As you already know form Bob?s post, the all-day Condor Express trip on Saturday was pretty spectacular. We also had a good diversity of bird sightings which was a nice change of pace from recent weeks when things were kind of blah, birdwise. I am attaching two lists below, one for the harbor and one for the remainder of the trip. Shorebird migration is picking up in Southern California. We saw about 15 Long-billed Curlews in the harbor on the way out and three marbled Godwits and two Willets on the way back. Underway we saw a single Semipalmated Plover (not rare, but also not a bird you see every day), a flock of about 25 shorebirds that were likely all Willets, and a flock of seven shorebirds that were likely all Marbled Godwits. There were about 15 Elegant Terns in the harbor on the way out. Elegant Terns have an unusual migration pattern. They nest in the Sea of Cortez, Northern Baja and Southern California and in late summer they move north along the coast usually up to San Francisco Bay but sometimes as far as British Columbia. In late fall they then migrate south to their wintering grounds in Guatemala and as far south as central Chile. The only other tern seen was a single Royal Tern in mid-channel. We saw four Common Murres, a group of three and a single individual, all fairly close to the coast. They must have all been females or immature birds because at this time of year the breeding males are attending their recently fledged chicks, so you always see them in pairs and the chick is usually begging loudly. Other alcids included three Cassin?s Auklets, a possible Rhinoceros Auklet and a possible Xantus? Murrelet. We saw three Sabine?s Gulls in breeding plumage. Sabine?s Gulls are strikingly handsome birds that we don?t get to see very often. They nest in the high Arctic and spend the winter on the ocean off Mexico down to Chile. They pass by our coast around April and again around August, but usually further offshore. They are much more common outside of the islands than in the channel, although on rare occasions we get to see one onshore. About half of the phalaropes that I identified to species were Red Phalaropes, which is somewhat unusual. Phalaropes also nest on the Arctic tundra and spend their winters on the ocean off South America. But Red Phalaropes tend to stay further offshore than Red-necked Phalaropes. On most days, most if not all phalaropes seen in the channel are Red-necked, while most seen outside of the islands are Red. It was a good day for storm- petrels. We saw approximately 20 Ashy Storm-Petrels and eight Black Storm-Petrels. Ashy Storm-Petrels nest on all Northern Channel Islands except Santa Rosa, and numbers are probably benefitting from the rat eradication on Anacapa. We also saw a couple of hummingbirds and what was probably a Mourning Dove. It is not unusual for migrating land birds to travel over the ocean. Some winter in islands, some migrate along the Channel Islands and some got lost or blown off course. Some of these birds perish in the ocean but most make it. Even though a civilian for this trip, naturalist habits stay in tact it seems, so I am writing this report. Blues, very mature ones, "popped up", were spotted in the distance and pursued. Hump pods split up and reconvened, and there were some familiar individuals. Behavior included several close passes, lots of flukes and one peck slap. Maybe some subsurface feeding by the Blues. These ACS trips are very informative. I am awful remembering names, but the whale researcher on board (Elise?) was just fantastic ! I learned lots! Also the bird guy helped everyone spot and appreciate the birds you just don't see every day... Sabine's gull, pink footed shearwaters, northern fulmars, white faced fulmar, ashy storm petrels... for example. Check out Bob Perry's pictures and of course... great to be on board with Cpt. Our first pair of Humpbacks were a friendly pair who graced us with very close-up views as they got close-up views of those on board. In the distance many spouts were seen, it looked like a wall of spouts that hung in the air due to the lack of wind. Captain Mat decided to pursue those, as it appeared there were Blues in that group. What we got was so much more, first it started with a group of six or so Humpbacks heading towards us in a line on our left, then another group of six plus seemed to make the Condor Express their destination coming up quickly from behind on the right. We were treated to some close up views and the sound of lots and lots blows. Then the a couple of Blues appeared, we went to observe them. A little while later we were treated to a trio of Blues racing for several minutes in front of us. The passengers were delighted, as well as myself to seeing the Blues moving quickly and launching their heads out of the water like a submarine coming to the surface. Captain Dave guided us to the same area as the Condor Express. We had similar numbers as reported aboard the CX, but more significant than the numbers of sightings was the quality of the sightings. Humpbacks approached the Islander from all angles with Blues shortly outside of them and multiple spouts of both Blues and Humpbacks further in the distance. Displays of flukes were abundant. I believe it is safe to say that every person with a camera captured multiple shots of fluke displays. It was truly an awesome day. The passengers, being absolutely awestruck, gave Captain Dave two separate rounds of applause - which were richly deserved. It was truly a "WOW" day. The humpbacks were in great unison where you could take 1 tail, 2 tail 3 tails all in a row. It was Humpback soup and Humpback Ballet! 3000 Dolphins, Dolphins, Dolphins, Dolphins and Dolphins those many days when we went with no dolphins were made up for today (and yesterday) when there were sooooo many it to was truly unbelievable! We first started seeing them about ? hour out and there were dolphins in groups of several hundred to over 1000 pretty much the rest of the way the SCI. And lots of little ones. 4 Blue Whales ? 2 Cow / Calf pairs way out west These were most likely 1st year calves as they seemed quite small (for a blue whale) As our finale, the last momma blue waved bye with a great dive, great looks and photo opps of the fluke and back 1/3 of the whale. By now it was after 2pm but I think everyone could have stayed till dark! We got to the dock at 3:30pm and many commented at how amazing it was today. Shauna ### Actor and Activist Edward James Olmos Urges Santa Barbara: "Don't Trash the Beach" in Thank You Ocean Summer Campaign* *SANTA BARBARA, Calif. ---* The Thank You Ocean campaign has partnered with Edward James Olmos to launch a public outreach campaign about beach debris. The campaign will be focused on Santa Barbara beaches and will run through Labor Day 2011. Olmos is featured in a series of English and Spanish language radio public service announcements (PSAs) and print messages running in Santa Barbara Aug. 19 through Sept. 5. The goal of the campaign is to increase public awareness about beach debris, especially during busy summer weeks when numbers of beach visitors increase and local beaches are faced with the trash generated by those visitors. Olmos draws attention to the unprecedented threats the ocean faces from climate change, water pollution, marine life decline, and marine debris. "There's no excuse for trashing our ocean," he says. "It's up to you and me to take a stand and do something to stop it." "The donation of Mr. Olmos' time, talent and influence to the Thank You Ocean campaign is a valuable contribution," said NOAA Administrator Dr. Jane Lubchenco. "Improving the health of the ocean is a challenge that affects us all, and these compelling announcements encourage the public to be a part of the solution." The PSAs are designed to reach English and Spanish-speaking listeners in Santa Barbara through radio and online audiences through social media outlets. The campaign will feature "Don't Trash the Beach" posters and target Santa Barbara beach communities. "Mr. Olmos says it all," said Brian Baird, California Assistant Secretary for Oceans. "This is one case where individuals can make a difference. Our beaches are spectacular; let's keep them that way by properly disposing and recycling our trash." Edward James Olmos is an actor, producer, director and humanitarian. The Emmy, Tony, and Golden Globe Award-winning actor may best be known for such films as /Stand and Deliver/ and /Mi Familia//Miami Vice/ and /Battlestar Galactica/. As an avid supporter of many environmental issues, Olmos was the campaign's first choice to reach California's communities with the Thank You Ocean message. As an activist and advocate for Latino culture, he supports education and outreach to stimulate community awareness and improve the human condition. and the television series In addition to the PSA featuring Edward James Olmos, the Thank You Ocean campaign features a PSA produced by world-renowned cinematographer Bob Talbot, an outdoor advertising campaign, a bi-weekly podcast series featuring leaders in ocean policy, a website in English and Spanish, and numerous social networking outlets. The campaign is focused on educating the public about the importance of sustaining ocean life and inspiring Californians to practice ocean stewardship to alleviate four major threats to the ocean: climate change, marine debris, water pollution, and marine life decline. The Don't Trash the Beach campaign is funded by California's Coastal Impact Assistance Program. The Thank You Ocean campaign is a nonprofit partnership supported by the state of California, NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and the Ocean Communicators Alliance. The campaign mission is to raise awareness of the benefits the ocean provides to us and to identify ways each of us can help protect the ocean in our everyday lives. In 2008, the Thank You Ocean Campaign received the Coastal America Award, the highest award given by the White House, for its ocean and coastal initiatives. Government and Industry experts will be facilitating seminars on three topics of interest: Deepwater Horizon Response, Oiled Wildlife Care Network, and Sensitive Sites Strategy, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Static displays such as communications trailers, a HASS-like boat, Patch technology for vessels, off-shore deployment of a Vessel of Opportunity Skimming System (VOSS) from Coast Guard Cutter George Cobb, and others, will be available for viewing from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. The seminars and displays will be held at Robert J. Lagomarsino Visitor Center located at Channel Islands National Park, 1901 Spinnaker Dr, Ventura, Calif. Displays will be at the Harbor Cove parking lot across the street from the Visitor Center, and the seminars will be held in the auditorium. The actual NPREP exercise will take place on Sept. 14 and 15 at an undisclosed location in the vicinity of Ventura County. For additional information on the public outreach events, contact Lt. Jennifer Osburn at (310) 521-3847. Agencies/Organizations Participating include U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEMRE), Regulation and Enforcement), Patriot Environmental Services, Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN), Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR), AeroVironment Inc., Clean Seas, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Marine Spill Response Corporation (MSRC), Channel Islands Marine Sanctuary (CINMS), Channel Watch Marine, National Parks Service (NPS), County of Ventura Office of Emergency Services, County of Santa Barbara Office of Emergency Services, NRC Environmental Services, O'Brien's Response Management Inc., Fish and Wildlife Services (FWS) and more. September is National Preparedness Month, and the NPREP is part of the committed effort to strengthen the Nations' response capabilities. The national preparedness architecture encompasses the full spectrum of prevention, protection, response, and recovery efforts to prepare the United States for all hazards. As of 2009, the Citizen Corps National Survey revealed that only 57% of Americans surveyed report having supplies set aside in their homes just for disasters, and only 44% have a household emergency plan. National Preparedness Month serves to encourage individuals across the nation to take important preparedness steps including: getting an emergency supply kit, making a family emergency plan, being informed about the different emergencies that may affect them, as well as taking the necessary steps to get trained and become engaged in community preparedness and response efforts. How quickly a company or organization is able to get back to business after an earthquake, a tornado, a fire, a flood, or a terrorist attack often depends on emergency planning and preparation done before the disaster strikes. The Ready Campaign highlights three steps to Business Disaster Preparedness: 1) Plan to Stay in Business; 2) Talk to Your People; and 3) Protect Your Investment. These steps underscore how important it is for businesses to document their property/equipment, back up business-critical information, and put a response team in place. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Unfortunately, we only came upon three pods of off-shore bottlenose dolphins. There were approximately 300 and they were beautiful and very animated and the majority of the group were thrilled. Even though it was rough on the channel, Capt Matt and crew of Matt and Brooke did a great job of keeping the crowd informed and entertained and managed to keep the Condor out of the rough seas which made for a very enjoyable trip with lots of sunshine for the vast majority of the passengers (ie, very few got sick) Hal Altman was aboard on PID and Valerie Olson did her usual fine job of educating the passengers on the channel and the whales. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Blues .................. 3 Humps ................ 2 Commons ............ 2000+ Capt. Dave powered the Condor about 35 miles out, where the first whales were seen north of San Miguel. For the next hour passengers (about 90) were thrilled to see two Blues feeding on the surface. As the Blues moved on the mother/calf humpback pair took over and repeatedly fed at the surface appearing oblivious to the Condor that at times was within 50 yards. Beautiful views of baleen, tongues, throats were offered up many times. Poor krill... they didn't have a chance! Many other spouts were seen widely dispersed at a distance. The third Blue cruised by just as Capt. Dave pointed the Condor home. Soon thereafter the first pod of Commons appeared and grew to over a thousand as passengers watched. The second large pod appeared about half hour out of port. Gray skies all day except near SB on the return. Fair wind, maybe 10-15 knots, and Beaufort 3... apparently much calmer than yesterday! Capt. Dave, Denis and Brooke on deck and Cary Stevens and Brian Resnik interpreting. As for me, the PID guy, no humpy flukes today and only 3 mediocre Blue photos. But the passengers with cameras got lots of really great feeding shots!!! Gary Delanoeye -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... She was the only official person out there and had a full campground. At 6:00 P.M. she was approached by a camper/kayaker who notified her that others in their party were kayaking near arch rock and were in distress, unable to make it back to the landing cove. The kayakers did not have wetsuits and had three people on a double kayak, one of whom was a young child. These kayakers were given multiple orientations, briefings and warnings during their stay on the island, but still got into a situation requiring assistance. Catherine immediately, and in a very professional manner, initiated a coordinated response via park radio that included myself, protection rangers, Sequoia dispatch and the U.S. Coast Guard. This all resulted in a successful return of the kayakers to the landing cove without injury. This situation could easily have escalated into a tragedy, but that was averted by Catherine's quick and appropriate actions. I want to publicly thank and applaud her good work. This event also highlights the importance of giving good orientations as well as knowledge of emergency procedures and proper radio use. I urge all of you to review these sections of the training manual so that if you end up in a situation like the one Catherine faced you can handle it just as well, increasing the chances for a happy ending like the one on Anacapa yesterday evening. This time, it was of a critical situation in the field, carried out with the professionalism Dave describes. Cahterine, you have always been a mentor to me, and this just serves to demonstrate its continuance, with aplomb. Your are not only loved and deeply respected as a person, but also as a senior mentoring Naturalist for both the Park and the Sanctuary. Dave ----- Original Message ----- From: Steve Junak To: David Begun Sent: Monday, August 22, 2011 2:07 PM Subject: Guadalupe Island slide show & Wine and Cheese Event, Sat, Aug 27 Hi Dave! I was wondering if you could alert Naturalist Corps volunteers about an event that's taking place at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden this Saturday, August 27, from 3-5 pm. I'll be giving a slide show about the amazing landscape recovery that's taking place on Guadalupe Island, not that feral goats have been removed from the island. I'll also be giving a photographic tour of the island, the Mexican Navy base there, the research field station, and the endemic Guadalupe cypress, pine, and palm groves. Guadalupe Island is the only oceanic island off the west coast of Baja and is located about 200 miles south of San Diego and 160 miles west of the Baja peninsula. The island shares many of its plants with our southern California Islands, especially San Clemente Island. Several plant species that were thought to be extinct on Guadalupe Island have been rediscovered in recent years. The dismal situation on the island is rapidly turning into an amazing success story! Alma Rosa Winery from northern Santa Barbara County is sponsoring this Wine and Cheese event. There will be a wide variety of cheeses and samples of Alma Rosa's excellent wines. This event was originally open to Botanic Garden members only, but there are still spaces available and we would like to open it to Natural Corps volunteers. The cost is $20/person. It anyone is interested in attending, they need to pre-register with Joan Evans at the Garden (805 682 4726 x 102 or jevans at sbbg.org). The Garden is located at 1212 Mission Canyon Road, Santa Barbara. Thanks, Dave! I think too many folks are now thinking their virtual world on the computer study can replace real physical practice and skill training via real repetition. Example: My current roomer, a computer science major at UCSB, decided to go last week with a friend who would take the both of them on a private rental plane through the Grand Canyon! He just got his flying license in Santa Barbara. Both are glued to their computers in simulated flying games. Old common sense makes one think that flying through the up and down drafts of the Grand Canyon takes more diligent study and thought then computer practice can provide. We continued on cruising the Santa Cruz coast then went to the south side of Anacapa to see all the hawled out sea lions & the arch before back to land. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This 8 hour trip will depart at 8:00AM (meet at 7:30). The cost for this trip is a very reasonable $90. Mid-September is right about the peak of seabird species diversity off Southern CA, and we can expect a wide variety of fall migrants and resident seabirds. Our plan will be to work south of the Santa Barbara Channel to find the warm water edges along the Santa Cruz basin. Storm-petrels often raft in these areas and this is the best place to look for Least Storm-Petrels in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. This area can also host large rafts of Pink-footed Shearwaters, and is the perfect area to look for rarer shearwaters such as Flesh-footed. Rarities in this area at this time of year have included Streaked Shearwater, Fork-tailed Storm-Petrel, and Blue-footed and Brown Boobies as well as Red-billed Tropicbird. None of these can be expected, but it is great time of year to check this area. Ashy, Black, and perhaps Leach's Storm-Petrels can be found, plus we have a good chance at all the Jaegers and Skua, plus an array of alcids and other pelagic species. We will be planning to spend time in both Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, so this should be a good trip to do some county listing. The Condor Express is a great boat with a full galley, ample seating and deck space and is a stable platform for viewing and photographing birds. The crew is world class. This should be a great trip for both experienced pelagic birders, as well as those who have never been on a pelagic. The boat will be well equipped with a cadre of our usual leaders, who will be pointing out the birds and helping participants make the most of their day. Call the Sea Landing at 888-77Whale to reserve your spot today. I hope to see you on the 17th. We averaged 50+ attending for the two presentations titled " Marine Mammals of the CINP and CINMS." Many in the audience at both presentations had seen Bottle Nose dolphin close to the beaches , as well as sea lions, during the day. We closed with the video clip of the rejuvenated Chumash Tomol crossings, and Tara wowed the audiences with the Rainbow Bridge story. Near by to both presentations were the sites of Chumash villages of old. And, as usual, the whale kit and its contents became a big attraction at the end; including information on how to get to the CINP in something other than a Tomol. The birds of note are, 7 Northern Fulmars, 8 Cassin's Auklets, 11 Ashy Storm Petrels, 3 Common Terns, 16 Sabine's Gulls, 1 Black-vented, 40+ Pink-footed, 250 Sooty Shearwaters, 2,000+ Red Phalaropes, 300+ Red-necked Phalaropes, 2 Parasitic, 3 Pomarine Jaegers and 1 Common Murre. Also seen were 300 Risso's Dolphins, 3,000 Common Dolphins and 1 very cool Basking Shark. It feed on krill at the surface until we left it. This shark was so close to the boat we could see it's mouth open as it ate the krill. Another cool thing we experienced was the mass of shearwaters feeding next to the boat as we sat and watched the dolphins feed. The shearwaters would hit the water and dove into the school of bait fish, while the Sabine's gulls feed from the surface. There is a 8 hour pelagic trip going out on September 17th this pelagic trip will be great for photography and adding county birds to your list. If you are interested call the Sea Landing at 805-882-0088. The pelagic birding is good up and down the state and should get better in a few weeks. I hope to see you at sea. The mystery was, no large cetaceans in evidence, despite ample krill, optimal H2O temp. (low), plenty (like thousands) of krill eating ?whale birds? (Mostly Red but some Red Necked Phalaropes) - This wasn?t the case six/seven weeks ago when we had no lg. cetaceans for a week - Then the water temp. was high (relative), as was the chlorophyll level (Dr. Libe Washburn, UCSB) - Highlight, rarely seen 12? (probably juvenile) Basking Shark filter feeding on krill at the surface and changing directions frequently, mouth agape ? Continued east, parallel with the 100 fa curve encountering two large groups of Common Dolphins, with much mating, cavorting, many breaches followed by smacking back landings - The concentration of babies and juveniles was extremely high, in the neighborhood of 25-40% of the populations respectively - Returned to port at 1500, with a group (approximately 70) pleased passengers. Passengers from Europe, Scandinavia, Midwest, and two escapees (PA) from Hurricane Irene?s wrath In spite of no whales and sick bay being well attended, all of those I talked with had a very positive experience. Just recently, we took a small group of Congressional staffers on the Prisoner to Pelican hike on Santa Cruz Island. The article referenced here, is about how Laura became involved in being a steward of the oceans and her love and commitment to sharing her knowledge and special talents with others.
