5 Blue Whales
15 Humpbacks (near boat)
20 Common Dolphin
10 Dall's porpoise
The Condor Express crew of Capt. Mat, Dennis and Brooke took out 100
passengers on this foggy trip to the vicinity of Santa Rosa Island.
Naturalists Linda Taylor, Vic Cox and Morgan Coffey (on PID) engaged the
U.S. and international passengers during a day that began as a medium high
marine layer and thinned out as we headed south but hung around until we
returned to the mainland.
Nonetheless visibility was sufficient to spot the above marine mammals, plus
the usual pinniped suspects. The Dall's porpoise were feeding when we came
upon them and provided a small ballet in black and white. The other notable
encounter came when a young humpback came up near the stern and inspected
the slow-moving CX up close. The skipper shifted into neutral and cut back
his engines to allow the perhaps 30-footer to circle us.
