Contact Joan Evans at the SBBG (contact info. below) if you would like to
attend this event. I've seen presentations in the past about Guadalupe
Island and it is a fascinating place with many parallels to the Channel
Islands. Steve's program will be very interesting.

Subject: Guadalupe Island slide show & Wine and Cheese Event, Sat, Aug 27
Hi Dave!
I was wondering if you could alert Naturalist Corps volunteers about an
event that's taking place at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden this
Saturday, August 27, from 3-5 pm. I'll be giving a slide show about the
amazing landscape recovery that's taking place on Guadalupe Island, not
that feral goats have been removed from the island. I'll also be giving a
photographic tour of the island, the Mexican Navy base there, the research
field station, and the endemic Guadalupe cypress, pine, and palm groves.
Guadalupe Island is the only oceanic island off the west coast of Baja and
is located about 200 miles south of San Diego and 160 miles west of the
Baja peninsula. The island shares many of its plants with our southern
California Islands, especially San Clemente Island. Several plant species
that were thought to be extinct on Guadalupe Island have been rediscovered
in recent years. The dismal situation on the island is rapidly turning
into an amazing success story!
Alma Rosa Winery from northern Santa Barbara County is sponsoring this Wine
and Cheese event. There will be a wide variety of cheeses and samples of
Alma Rosa's excellent wines.
This event was originally open to Botanic Garden members only, but there
are still spaces available and we would like to open it to Natural Corps
volunteers. The cost is $20/person. It anyone is interested in attending,
they need to pre-register with Joan Evans at the Garden (805 682 4726 x 102
or jevans at sbbg.org).
The Garden is located at 1212 Mission Canyon Road, Santa Barbara.
Thanks, Dave!
Steve
