Thanks Steve and Dave,
 The island also has quite a marine ecological history. It was a seasonally bountiful habitat for the pelagic sardines and tunas that once were seasonally bountiful in our channel. And, the Northern Elephant Seal, once declared extinct,  actually was resurrected  by a heard of less than a hundred mating and molting there- that were never found by hunters.   Paul
