In Pixar's aquatic adventure Finding Nemo, Dory, voiced by Ellen DeGeneres, attempts to communicate with a whale to find the missing title character. She speaks in a loud, slow drawl to the whale, but when that fails, she says, "Maybe a different dialect." "We actually know that killer whales do use dialects," marine biologist Peter Tyack tells Weekend Edition host Audie Cornish. Despite the tongue-in-cheek depiction of whale songs, Tyack says the film got it right. "We don't know what the sounds mean, but each killer whale family has its own set of calls, like a dialect in human language," he says. Tyack, a marine biologist at the University of St. Andrews, is also a coordinator of Whale FM, a new online experiment that's recruiting citizen scientists to study killer and pilot whale calls from around the world. "The experiment is the first step in understanding how these whales communicate," he says. "The first thing we need to know is how to categorize their calls." His research team needs help to sort through almost 15,000 different sound recordings and group similar ones together. That's where you, the citizen scientist, come in. Tyack's team is counting on whale-song lovers to log on to Whale FM and listen to sounds of various whales calling to each other. Tyack says much about whale communication remains a mystery for scientists, and he hopes crowdsourcing this new study may lead to some answers. "We share a mammalian hearing system with killer whales and we think that lots of people, just using their own ears, should be able to make good matches of these calls," he says. "And the more people who decide, the better sense we get of how reliable their judgments are." In the end, Tyack says, one of the major parts of the crowdsourcing concept of the project is to promote the fact that anyone can take part in science. My point is that polar bear and bear populations across the globe as well as many other species have seen cannibalism.? Look at the grizzllies, males that are hungry will go after and eat a cub, just as would a polar bear.? You have baboons eating chimpanzees,? lions eating cubs of other prides etc..... It's not a climate change issue!?? Remember reading the story of the photographer that took the picture of the polar bear clinging to the piece of ice in the ice flow on the front cover of a very well know magazine, and the headline was global warming or climate change and all of a sudden everyones hearts were melting as fast as the glaciers, blah.? Then later come to find out he admitted the picture was taken during the summer melt.? Pictures can be quite deceiving just like the media. --- On Thu, 12/8/11, Catherine French wrote: From: Catherine French Subject: [CINC] BBC E-mail: Polar bear 'cannibalism' pictured To: "CINC Rain List" Date: Thursday, December 8, 2011, 8:29 AM This is gruesome but understandable. Capt. Mat was planning to go to the gap between Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa in search of grays but the closer we got high winds and waves prevented us from reaching our destination comfortably so we cruised westward. This is a route seldom taken due to the prevailing west winds off Point Conception but today it was calm with great visibility. Unfortunately there were no whales in sight but all enjoyed the leisurely cruise in the Gaviota area and a side trip to Platform Holly. Along the way we did see several pods of active sea lions and a handful of Dall?s porpoises. Mankind is screwing up the environment and we need to do a better job; however, the real problem is there are too many of us. However, mankind is not the cause of global warming and it saddens me as an Honest Steward of Our Environment to see the MCGW hoax being continually spun via RAIN for public consumption. I have an inquisitive mind and when I don't understand something associated with my field of expertise I seek answers. Our first sighting of Sea Lions, beyond the harbor buoy, was very different. A raft of about 200 popped up all around the boat much like we see the common dolphin do. All over the place, jumping out of the water and just plane carrying on in a most playful mode. Much of the time was spent looking for the Grays, out to Santa Rosa, then into the SCI-SRI gap looping into Becher's Bay, with a nice view of the new pier and ranch buildings. Rounding toward SCI and well into the gap we came across the Risso's dong their usual synchronized swimming but seven were giving us some nice flukes, with a few jumping lightly out of the water as they progressed. We cruised with them for a good bit, enjoying their presence. Near these, still in the gap, about a thousand cormorants sitting on the water, just bobbing there, as if to no purpose other than just sitting there. As we passed them some flew, but most stayed and those that did fly came on around back to and rejoining the rest of the flock. Then after we were well passed them, the all go up and flew, in a long line heading north. A beautiful sight to be sure. Approaching SCI we spotted our first blow, a Gray, most likely a cow as it was quite big. It was moving east through the channel and we got some good looks and a couple of flukes as we cruised with it for some time before it dove and was gone. Capt. Merit took us into a little cove where some of the Harbor Seals haul out, and where we got our sighting of them. On and into Painted Cave, with a very low tide, many Ocra Sea Stars were visible along the rocky waterline. Many thanks to Captain Merit, Matt and Brook doing Crew, and Bob Perry, Condor Charters Photographer for the great trip and good info. Laura Shelton was my sidekick on this one, with her doing the PID tasks, I giving the initial presentation and both many a good chat with the 24 folks and kids on this run. We missed the ever intrepid Debbie Shelley who's dog became ill and she could not make it. We will catch you next time, Debbie. Birds - Western Gull Brants and Pelagic Cormorants Sooty Shearwater People from - Austria, New York, South Dakota, Colorado, San Francisco, Modesto, Santa Barbara, San Frenando Valley, But of course, another beautiful day on the channel, with good sightings. The morning started off with a mild swell and about a third of the 90 folks fell ill to the "Greenies." As we pulled in near SCI (north, channel side) we were in the wind shadow and it mellowed out very nicely. The Island Adventure had spotted a gray on its way to Scorpion and relayed that info to us and we were on our way. Cruising well passed Scorpion we came on a gray, steadily heading toward Baja. This one ever use many a good looks and a couple o flukes. Not much else, sea mammal wise, was sighted in this AM run, but the folks were quit happy with the lone, yet good long sighting. the seas by this time had quieted very nicely all across the channel, for the smooth ride back to port. The afternoon run boarded 123 folks, ready for many a sightings. With calm seas, not many fell ill, and the sightings were good. Into the AI/SCI Gap, sighting the two masted schooner, Bill of Rights, on its day's cruise, we stayed focused on looking for whales. Looping in and out of the gap and again on the north side of SCI, some friendly fishing folks in their private boat, just off SCI reported one near them, so again we were off to see it. Well, it was not a Gray Whale, rather it was two, blowing also in tandem, and both of good size, trekking on toward Baja. So we hung with them for a very good bit, and these two were show boaters as far as flashing their flukes. Many a fluke were offered to the delight of the folks and of course the cameras were all a whirr. I'm not sure in have seen, in my 5 years, so many flukes offers by the grays. It was, of course, very nice. Turning toward home, up popped our first group of Risso's, then as they were fading, along came some more, no these were our Bottle Nose Dolphins, and of course, much more playful than the Risso's. Captain Dave gave thenma nice circle of wake to play with, and they did not disappoint. Again the cameras were a buzz. Then another pod of Risso's showed, glissening nicely in the late afternoon sun. Shortly after that, and heading home, we came on yet another pod of Risso's, much to the delight of the folks thinking they had already seen it all. Much thanks to Captain Dave and his crew of Mike and Andrea in the AM, and Captain Michael, joining us in the afternoon. My good CINC Naturalist side kick for the day, Maria Ornelas kept the sightings report in good order, while I gave our presentation at the beginning of each run. A good team for sure. She well managed a crowd of 35 on her first hike and nailed the interpretation. She had the crowd engrossed and received a big round of applause at the end! Yeah, Barbara!
