Paul From: ppetrich39 at hotmail.comPosted in Japan, TaijiKilling in "The Cove" Goes On!!MorningsPosted on January 28, 2011 by Sheri| 4 CommentsI have been on the ground in Taiji now for a week and have witness more death than I ever care to admit. Everyday is worse than the day before and it just continues day in and day out. The mornings here are the worst. I wake up before the sun and my hands and heart tremble with the thought of what lies ahead. We head of early and watch and wait trying to entertain ourselves with happy thoughts until the sight of the banger boats appear. Then its too the camera?s and silence. Today, again, I watch in horror as 10 banger boats drove a pod of beautiful Risso dolphins straight into the killing cove. No it does no get easier. The adrenaline kicks in and I focus on the job at hand. Document, document, document, in hopes that a tarp my slip, a dolphin may escape, anything. The sounds are the worst. The cries, the banging and then the silence. I film these beautiful dolphins just to keep their memories alive in hopes that someday this will come to an end. If there is a hell then I hope these men who do this have to spend an eternity with the souls of the dolphins that they have killed, tortured and destroyed. Today, again, the cove ran red with blood. Please call the Japanese embassy, write a letter, get involved, do what you can to let the world know that this is still going on. Like Ric O?barry said in the movie ?The Cove?, ?if we can?t stop this then there really is no hope? Am trip 2 gray whales (first north bound according to Caption Anthony) 1800 common dolphins 2 sightings 2 elephant seals and 1 pup 200+ sea lions Am trip about 20 people most local some from back east trying to escape the cold. One gentleman had lived in Ventura for 10 years and moved away and was visiting this week, it was his first time out to see the islands and whale watch. It was a great day, big swell going out, nobody got sea sick and everyone was in awe of all the dolphins. We encountered 2 gray whales that were north bound( first ones seen by Captain Anthony) Then saw about 1000 common dolphin. Round Anacapa Island an Saw hundreds of sea lions thermo regulating and more on shore. Also saw the 2 elephant seals and one pup. On the way home we encounter another pod of about 700 common dolphins. 2 bottlenose dolphins 4 grays 5000 common dolphins Pm trip About 25 people mostly local some europeans 2 bottle nose dolphins as soon as we exited the harbor, One lone gray whale that was very friendly seemed to swim at the surface most of the time. Cruised out to east end of Santa Cruz inland and came upon 3 gray whales. All the whales on this trip were south bound. Ended the trip by cruising Anacapa from east to west. All the passengers were impressed with the shear cliffs. On the way back we came across a mega pod of 5000 common dolphins. It was totally awesome dude. Everyone was impressed. I forgot on our first trip Captain Anthony stop in a pod of dolphins to pick up a bunch of trash and some balloons, and gave a good talk on if you choose balloons to pop them instead of letting them go. Linda Hitt was a great help as I am not the best with local sites in Ventura. Debbie Shelley -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Starting about half way out to The Gap between SCI and SRI we encountered two separate small pods of bow riding Dall's Porpoise (about 5 each). In the NW sector of the Gap, we sighted 3 southerly migrating Grays who dove continuously, displaying their flukes every time. Capt Matt surmised that two males were courting a female. Later, as we approached Painted Cave, we sighted one more less than a mile off shore SCI. On the way home we came across another 2 Dall's. Closer to Santa barbara we were entertained by a small group of Common Dolphine. Afternoon trip found 2 grays within 2 miles from shore, in about 80 feet of water. They appeared to be unsure which direction to go, as they seemed to keep popping up in different areas. They finally settled down, and appeared to be heading south. Capt Anthony suggested they may be young adults on their first trip southbound, and not really sure of the terrain. Anthony then found a large group of commons again pretty far east of Anacapa. This pod had many baby's and juveniles, which the first pod didn't seem to have. These were very playful, very close to the boats, and more of them surfed the wake than I had seen in a long time. Headed toward Anacapa, and found a group of 5-10 offshore bottlenose hanging around. Cruised the back side of Anacapa and found a larger group of bottlenose, 100+. A group of these began chasing the boat, and treated us to some spectacular high breaches and jumps. I hadn't observed this kind of behavior before, in this species. The passengers were whooping it up, as was I. 2 full boats of people from Asia, Israel, Canada, and many states. Ohio, Texas, North Dakota. They were basking in our lovely weather. I was the lone naturalist on both trips, had a great time, but went up and down the steps on the boat many many times, so my legs got a good workout. I hadn't been out on the water since October, due to weather, health, family and work concerns, so it was wonderful to have such a great day! Captain Anthony, Zac and Dee Dee did their excellent job of taking care of the crew and giving lots of information to the passengers. I hadn't been out on the water since October, due to weather, health, family and work concerns, so it was wonderful to have such a great day! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It subsided enough to keep all but an unfortunate few from "mal de mer" who were ably and kindly assisted by Paige and Steve. A lively pod of commons, approximately 40% calves, meet us close to Santa Cruz followed by a single gray who tricked us by heading north. We then followed three grays heading south. Trip: 37 passengers from Germany (Munich), Dallas Texas, Ventura, Oxnard and other No whales Feeding frenzy; Common dolphins, sea gulls, cormorants, sea lions and pelicans It was a weather perfect day; great visibility, calm seas, pleasant warm winds, and interested passengers with lots of questions. Captain Jason, Joel, Laurie, and Maria did their part in the best of disposition under such favorable conditions. Captain took us to Arch Rock, and then to the back of Anacapa Is. The trip was uneventful until we were headed back to the harbor. That is when we came upon the feeding frenzy. The pelicans were most spectacular doing their powerful dives 20 feet from the boat. They dove one after another for about 10 minutes. Coming up to the surface to swallow fish they had caught. Both passengers and crew were mesmerized. The Commons (~ 200) were very active. As they would race the boat, they would 'flap' on their side. They were the favorite of many people I talked to. All were satisfied when we got back to the harbor. P.M. Trip: 2 Gray whales ~ 250 - 300 Common dolphins Captain Jason headed towards the west of Anacapa. Many of the passengers were European. I talked with a family from Estonia. There was a couple from Arkansas and another from Michigan. The 47 passengers were treated to Common dolphins just 30 minutes out of the harbor. We caught up with this much larger and traveling pod of Commons. They stayed with us for about 20 minutes as passengers took pictures and video. The 2 Grays we encountered in this area were southbound and traveling together. We got a good look at them. They dove several times and we were treated to at least 4 flukes. Enjoying the perfect weather and seeing the whales was the highlight of the afternoon trip. Maria G. Excerpt from June, 2010 Pomona College Magazine feature on Prof. Jennifer Perry, associate professor and chair of anthropology department, who has devoted more than a decade to finding and exploring ancient settlements on the Channel Islands: ? Working on the eastern end of Santa Cruz Island, Perry has been exploring ?how the terrestrial resources of the island were being used and more generally why people were living at interior sites,? says Michael Glassow, professor emeritus from UC Santa Barbara. Perry discovered archeological sites dating back 8,000 years?far earlier than others had anticipated, and her work is helping to change the way archeologists view how the Chumash lived. More than simple seafarers, they formed a complex society that became, in effect, the hub of a pre- Columbian regional economy.? ?She is the first one to clearly recognize this temporal pattern, and I?m beginning to see the same pattern where I work in the western sector of the island,? says Glassow, who himself is an expert on island cultures and served as Perry?s dissertation advisor. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Annual dredging of material buildup in the Ventura Harbor channel is under way to ensure the waterway remains navigable, particularly for squid boats and other large commercial operations.? Fewer federal funds mean less material will be removed this year, but harbor officials say the channel will remain at an adequate depth. Ventura Harbor is the largest squid port on the West Coast, and a fully loaded squid boat returning to the docks can require clearance up to 16 feet deep. Some boats can carry up to 80 tons of squid.Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard was dredged in December and January. The work at Ventura Harbor is done annually, while Channel Islands is dredged every other year, primarily because it has a larger sand trap that can absorb more material without causing problems in the channel entrance? Parsons with the largest hydrologic dredge on the West Coast finishes next Friday. ? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The day continued the fantastic weather and sea conditions, we have been having, with hardly any swell, almost glassy surface. In the morning, we came on the Dds a little more than mid way to the Gap of AI and SCI. Playful with several full breaches and some jumping to the delight of the folks and kids on board. Babies were seen by many. Approaching the Gap, spouts were seen toward AI and sure enough, we had two, three, no five running together south. Steady as they went, with many nice blows and good flukes for the photo buffs of all stripes. Any kind of device that had a camera on board was out and shooting away. Followed them for some time then broke off to search for others. Well into the gap, two more south bounders heading east (heh, heh). Again, nice blows and consistent flukes on a very clear day. Folks, 82, from many local areas, Ventura, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Santa Clarita joined some from Minnesota, Massachusetts, Japan and India to take in this just spectacular day on the Channel. In the afternoon, we were delayed coming out of the harbor by the Dredge support vessels maneuvering the Dredge in place, with the Harbor Patrol blocking traffic for about 10 minutes or more. Finally out of the harbor into the same day as the AM, flat seas, no wind, nor swell, we were off. In a similar area as in the AM we came on a larger pod of Common Dolphins, pretty much on a mission east, but several still pealed off to come over to play the boats pressure wave and wake. Yep, the photo frenzy was on as well, as was the squeals of the kids and the "bigger" kids. Toward the Gap up came two Grays, but at a distance and long down times. Tracked them for a bit, then on to more. Off and well into the Out Back of AI and about to make the turn back, two more Grays surface for us, and again at a distance, rather shy and not too interested in the boat, today. We figured being they are late to the party in Baja, they were determined to get there, ... at least for the final hurrah. Again, Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands were visible from the AI Out Back. That is some distance to be seen. Then as we turned toward home, we had the South side of AI, the Santa Ynez Mountains and Figueroa Mountain all stacked nicely and distinctly one on top of another, with an ocean foreground. Very cool what a very clear day can lay out before us. We had another good group of folks, nearing a full boat, many locals as from the AM, two families from England, one family from New Zealand, and Indian (India) family from Redondo Beach and may kids all having just the best of times. Captain Anthony, Crew of Steve and Zac, did their usual great job of finding our little ocean critters, with fine narration, keeping the galley running at full speed with no one on either run getting acquainted with the green faced whoas. (of course, did we mention, flat calm seas? They may have contributed, just a bit) Ken Tatro, lone Naturalist on these two runs, still a whole bunch of fun, never getting old. Message-ID: Hi Everyone, For those of you at the meeting last night, you know about the new sighting logs. For those who weren?t, please read on. The sighting log has been updated with regard to how we record distances. In the past, we were asked to estimate the distance and record that number for each sighting. To simplify things, going forward, all distances will be be recorded in one of three categories: A = <25 yards (25 yards is the length of the boat) B = 25 to 250 yards C = >250 yards So instead of recording the actual distance, you will now record either A, B or C in the distance field. You can start using this method right away, even if the new forms aren?t on your boat just yet. To help you estimate those distances, 25 yards is approximately the length of Condor Express and all three Island Packer boards. So a quick glance at the boat will help you determine A vs. B. 250 yards is the distance from the Visitor Center auditorium to the land directly across the harbor. Whenever you are at the VC (which should be 8+ times per year at least), do a quick distance check. The new forms have these codes in the lower right corner so you don?t have to remember them. If you want to download your own copies, you can find them at: http://cid-b7f1ea3e50eba624.office.live.com/self.aspx/CINC/PhotoID/DataSheetBlank2011.pdf http://cid-b7f1ea3e50eba624.office.live.com/self.aspx/CINC/PhotoID/DataSheetSantaBarbaraHarbor2011.pdf http://cid-b7f1ea3e50eba624.office.live.com/self.aspx/CINC/PhotoID/DataSheetChannelIslandsHarbor2011.pdf http://cid-b7f1ea3e50eba624.office.live.com/self.aspx/CINC/PhotoID/DataSheetVenturaHarbor2011.pdf Let Shauna or I know if you have any questions. Boyle novel about Channel Islands Message-ID: <4D5EED8A.2090207@cox.net> I just saw a book review in the New York Times (Feb 18, 2011) about T.C. Boyle's new novel, "When the Killing's Done." We are all well-versed in the backdrop of the novel, which is the CINP actions taken in recent years to preserve native species on the islands. Boyle explores the controversy over those actions. From the NY Times: ?When the Killing?s Done? is a forthright examination of that desire, in which the remodelers of earthly creation have to measure the worth of a healthy ecosystem against the lives of damaging invaders. The dilemma is so rarely discussed that animal lovers and environmentalists are routinely lumped into the same political camp. One of the novel?s many merits is its well-informed framing of the moral difference between them. From reading two of Boyle's novels, "Riven Rock," based in Montecito, and "Tortilla Curtain," which takes place in the Topanga Canyon, I anticipate the book will have some bizarre characters and events but, in the end, I hope, will do a great service in spreading awareness of the Channel Islands and what the park service has accomplished. The publication date is February 22nd. Lisa Anderson -----Original Message----- From: channel_islands_naturalist_corps-bounces at rain.org [mailto:channel_islands_naturalist_corps-bounces at rain.org] On Behalf Of David Chubb Sent: Friday, February 18, 2011 2:07 PM To: Rain List Subject: [CINC] New T.C. Boyle novel about Channel Islands I just saw a book review in the New York Times (Feb 18, 2011) about T.C. Boyle's new novel, "When the Killing's Done." We are all well-versed in the backdrop of the novel, which is the CINP actions taken in recent years to preserve native species on the islands. Boyle explores the controversy over those actions. From the NY Times: "When the Killing's Done" is a forthright examination of that desire, in which the remodelers of earthly creation have to measure the worth of a healthy ecosystem against the lives of damaging invaders. The dilemma is so rarely discussed that animal lovers and environmentalists are routinely lumped into the same political camp. One of the novel's many merits is its well-informed framing of the moral difference between them. Guess what they were looking for? It was tuff to tear the hikers away from the fox display. Better yet, foxes were appearing from seemingly every direction along the trail. I stopped counting after 24 sightings. So if you're a fox lover or maybe haven't seen one 'in the wild' get to Scorpion soon! I'll speculate that this period before they 'den up' is full of territorial squabbles, extra feeding by the females to bulk up for pup bearing and taking advantage of all the available fresh water and resulting good stuff to eat. PS - I have a picture of a fox seated literally at the feet of a visitor at a picnic table that is vaguely reminiscent of a domesticated canine or house cat! We still have quite a few openings on the March whale watch schedule so be sure to visit VolunteerSpot to sign up for more trips. And please keep an eye on the outreach calendar, we are still looking for help with the March 20th Celebration of Whales at Channel Islands Harbor. As a follow-up to Joel's email below regarding the new sighting log forms, please read this important message: We are having some issues with the distance values we added to the new sightings log forms. We ask that you *_do not enter a value at this time until further notice_*. We are working on a solution that will support the end product use of the sightings data for resource protection (e.g., mapping endangered whales in proximity to the shipping lanes). Thank you for your cooperation and stay tuned for further updates regarding this matter! Shauna Joel E. About half to Anacapa we got to enjoy a large pod of dolphin. Captain Dave and crew took time out to take another balloon out of the water, said they actually retrieved over 300 balloons last year. Right in front of oil platform Gail we spotted 3 gray whales north bound. On the way back we cruised along the coast and found some bottlenose right by Ventura fair grounds. Seem they were in a rest mode according to Captain Dave. I had a question about if they gathered seagull eggs on Anacpa to sell. I really did not get enough info but the passenger that inquired said he read about it in our paper. Well after looking in the paper and not finding it I asked the passenger and he found it for me. They actually were collected in 1850 and the eggs were sold in San Francisco. It got me to thinking what seagull eggs would taste like and they do actually serve them in England.
