Annual dredging of material buildup in the Ventura Harbor channel is under way to ensure the waterway remains navigable, particularly for squid boats and other large commercial operations. Fewer federal funds mean less material will be removed this year, but harbor officials say the channel will remain at an adequate depth. Ventura Harbor is the largest squid port on the West Coast, and a fully loaded squid boat returning to the docks can require clearance up to 16 feet deep. Some boats can carry up to 80 tons of squid.Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard was dredged in December and January. The work at Ventura Harbor is done annually, while Channel Islands is dredged every other year, primarily because it has a larger sand trap that can absorb more material without causing problems in the channel entrance Parsons with the largest hydrologic dredge on the West Coast finishes next Friday.
