We have been seeing some killer whales in the Channel recently and thanks to the boat operators and your photo-ID efforts we are able to provide valuable information about the killer whales sighted in our region. I would like to thank Joel Justin for getting CINC PID images to Alisa Schulman-Janiger so quickly. Please read below for Alisa's report on the sightings from mid-December. Cheers, Shauna The 6 killer whales that the Condor Express encountered on Dec 12 and Dec 16 were the same transients: the CA51 matriline. These include a matriarch and her 4 offspring as well as her grandchild. The CA51s are probably the most frequently seen transients off the Moss Landing area of Monterey Bay, often preying on California sea lions and harbor seals. I have seen them several times; they are very curious and often closely approaching boats. My colleague Nancy Black has seen them attack gray whale calves off Monterey on multiple occasions. The CA51s were last confirmed off southern California in June 2010 (off Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Dana Point: looking into the boat! They were off Monterey in September. IDs for the CA51s (5 whales over 3 generations): 1. CA51 - adult female, first documented off Monterey Bay in 1991. CA51 has 4 offspring: CA51A, CA51B, CA51C, and CA51D 2. CA51A (female). CA51A has a juvenile, CA51A-1. 3. CA51B (Nearly sprouted male): he has the tallest fin 4. CA51C (Probably a young male; fin is starting to change shape) 5. CA51D (Calf, born this year). 5. CA51A-1 (juvenile: born 2007). Keep an eye out for this group! We really need better ID pics of the young calf; your images from these encounters are the first that I've seen of this calf. In-Reply-To: <4D222109.4090608@noaa.gov> References: <4D222109.4090608@noaa.gov> Message-ID: <4D2234DA.5000702@noaa.gov> Below you will find information about the killer whales sighted on 12/31 in the Channel (they are different whales from the ones documented earlier in December and described in my previous email). 4 IDs: CA171B (male sprouter "Fatfin") CA138 ("Scratchy"- adult female) CA138A (juv) CA138B (calf) These whales are most commonly sighted off Monterey, but they have made quite a few excursions to the Channel Islands (and even a few down my way). Some sighting history: 1. CA171B: (sprouting male): close associate of CA138 (NOT her juvenile) He was born around 1999. This whale has an odd, triangular, wide dorsal fin. CA138 has been sighted with this whale many times since August 2005. He has been sighted with several different whales, and is sometimes seen alone. Also, he was with CA138 and calf off Santa Barbara from the Condor Express on 21 December 2008 and most recently on 9 Sept 2010. 2. Adult female CA138 "Scratchy" (she has a very scratched-up saddle). She was first photographed in Monterey Bay on 10 October 1995. I saw her off Palos Verdes on January 3, 2003. She traveled with a group of 5 whales southbound into waters off Orange County, the southernmost point documented along the Pacific coast of any known transient ecotype killer whale (and repeated this in December 2009). I also saw her off Monterey in 2005 and 2006. She was with her VERY young calf in May 2007 off Malibu. She has been seen in the Santa Barbara Channel several times since 2007. 3. CA138A (juv of CA138) As far as I know: first photographed in May 2007 off Malibu (very small, with intensely orange eyepatches). They have been seen off Santa Barbara a few times (including September 2007 and 21 December 2008), off Santa Cruz Island in August 2008, and in Monterey Bay in October 2008. 4. CA138B (calf of CA138) First sighted in April 2010 off Monterey. CA171B is a presumed orphan who is most often sighted with CA138. You sighted him on 28 December 2008 - his dorsal fin has grown a lot! Anthony saw these whales in 2005, 2006, and 2007. I am keeping image records of both sides of the dorsal fins and saddles, as well as both eyepatches. If you have any more good ones that show these, please pass them on. Thanks again for the great pics! They are really helping to fill in the life histories of these whales. It is ESPECIALLY important to document the calves. They rarely have distinctive markings. If they lose their moms (like CA171B), we only know that due to good images shot of him while he was with her. Rather a good day out there on the pond! By 1100, Capts. Matt and Dave had the Condor in the midst of a HUGE feeding frenzy replete with the commons, birds, sea lions. Passing through that, the Condor headed to the Santa Cruz-Santa Rosa notch. Spouts were sighted at about a mile off... 2 grays. At about this time, a call came in about Orcas in the area. The Condor changed course as the 2 grays fluked. Within 10 minutes the 26 passengers were face to face with a pod of 8 transient Orcas, including a baby. These guys hung out with the Condor for about an hour behaving more like friendly humpbacks. Tail slapping, spy hopping, possible mating behavior, mini-breaching, mugging. They were often directly under the bow, swimming upside down, squeaking (how can something called a "Killer" squeak??), bubbling. What a treat! Upon leaving them, the Condor headed for Painted cave and entered an area thick with Rissos and birds. Another great look at the largest pod of Rissos I have seen! There was too much surge to get into the cave, but the waterfalls were still flowing and clearly visible. Then, time to go home. A very delightful crowd from much colder areas around the world: Denmark, Germany, England, New Hampshire, Kansas, Utah. Seas were Beaufort of 1, widely spaced swells of 4-6 feet, no wind. Oh yes... a friendly blue shark too was seen by all in the clear water. Nice... very nice! Gary Delanoeye -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... At 10:10 a.m. we encountered the Gray + calf, just after passing Platform Gina.l. We actually saw the cow by herself first. She was very shy and dove. We moved ~ 100 yards and encountered her again, this time the calf by her side. They were headed south. We left them and went looking, watching/hoping for some action., We encountered a small but very playful group of sea lions. They were a delight to watch. There were very few birds along the way, but the day was so beautiful, that we all had a great time. P.M. Trip: Again we left the CI Harbor as well as its' light fog behind. There were about 30 passengers . A group of nature photographers made up half the passengers on-board. This time, Ctn. Jason took us around Arch Rock, where saw many sea-lions playing? We didn't see whales until we were headed back to the harbor. This Gray was traveling (SE) and treated us to lovely flukes. We saw a few spouts out in the distance. Unfortunately, it was time to get back to the harbor, and as we did, we were teated to a spectacular, blazing sunset. Bill Weinerth was the 2nd Naturalist on the boat. Maria G. His heritage goes back to pioneers to San Pedro from Mexico, and Gabrielino Native American residing on Santa Catalina Island. Not mentioned in his obituary are his amazing adventures on the sea that he loved. John and his wife, Muriel, are legendary in San Pedro for their many rowing feats performed in a small 14 foot designer row boat. They were always a team. Rowing adventures included trips to Catalina Island seven times, rowing from Channel Island to Channel Island, rowing between islands in Fiji and in the Caribbean, as well as rowing all the way from Monterey to San Pedro ( in intervals, always returning to the boat where they left it ). John met Muriel when he was a Junior Lifeguard in San Pedro who volunteered to row YWCA young ladies to Angel's Gate Lighthouse at the entrance to Los Angeles Harbor from Cabrillo Beach. She always helped him row. John is renown by our local Island Packers and the Channel Islands National Park staff for his annual recreation of the explorer Carrillo's probable landing on San Miguel Island in 1542. He did this for 36 years straight! On one of these re-enactments recently, Muriel and John treated a fortunate few of us in Skipper Anthony's wheel house, on the way back to Ventura Harbor, to a wonderful sketch of their life on the sea together. He was a true Master Mariner, as well as Care Taker of the Sea. Paul Petrich -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I was ready to turn east to search for more when the gray popped up fifty feet to starboard, looked at us as it rose. We saw the entire whale! The kids were thrilled. Vanguard had shown up to view the whale, so I turned off. Found common dolphins, about 200, then sours near arch rock. Headed toward AI but found two more on the way, they were shy. So headed to east end AI and found two more swimming and spouting in tandem. After several cycles, we needed to head home. As we turned toward Channel Islands Harbor, one of the two grays rose to the surface turned sideways and looked at us. We found a blue shark at the surface and more commons as we headed home. Sunday, January 8 on ESCI saw fine grays from Cavern Point, found 700 commons on way home. Did not locate the Ocas Jason had told us he found on Vanguard. I did see a large spout and told Capt. Found first gray one mile north of platform Gail. Watched for three cycles, flukes with each dive. I was ready to turn east to search for more when the gray popped up fifty feet to starboard, looked at us as it rose. We saw the entire whale! The kids were thrilled. Vanguard had shown up to view the whale, so I turned off. Found common dolphins, about 200, then spouts near arch rock. Headed toward AI but found two more grays on the way, they were shy. > > Sunday, January 8 on ESCI saw five grays from Cavern Point, found 700 commons on way home. Message-ID: Dear CINC Volunteers, The Los Angeles Maritime Museum, at the old ferry building in San Pedro, has just featured "Shipwreck of the Purse Seiner Del Rio" its quarterly newsletter the Channel Crossings. The Del Rio now rests in shallow water in Frenchy's Cove off Inspiration Point, Anacapa Island. My father was one of the original owners when the vessel was a part of the most productive fishing fleet in the world, plying the most bountiful fishing grounds in the world. Robert Schewemmer, the West Coast Regional Maritime Heritage Coordinator, and his NOAA team are currently doing exploratory and monitoring dives on the wreck. I would like to thank Robert for giving me the opportunity to write a researched story of this CINP and CINMS maritime heritage treasure, and for his expert contributions to the story, through both editing and undersea photography. I would also like to thank Joel Justin, our very own CINC Volunteer of the Year, for his expert choreographing of the photo inclusions and formatting of the research story. He helped me in an area I would have screwed up immensely! Thanks to both of you for your patients with my constant updating! The Del Rio story in the Channel Crossings will be continued in a second installment come March. That installment will introduce the CINP and CINMS as the home of the Del Rio today as she rests in their waters, which are once again becoming the marine treasure chest they once were. Thanks also to "Silent" Don Mills, another hardworking CINC member who found in his own archives, a photo of the Del Rio's wooden remains scattered on the beach of Frenchy's Cove a year or two after she sank. Sincerely, Paul Petrich Jr.P.S. The Builder's Plaque installed on the Del Rio when she was built in 1935, but taken off by the U.S. Navy prior to WWII when she saw military duty as a commissioned mine sweeper, was found by a nautical collector in San Francisco. Robert Schwemmer was also instrumental in helping me obtain this nautical artifact and to get it to the Santa barbara Maritime Museum. In 1952, when the Del Rio sank, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum was actually a US Navy and Coast Guard facility and home base for the Coast Guard Cutter that sped to the distress call site. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We found 50 Risso's Dolphins in a number of small pods of up to about 10 individuals at the West end of Santa Cruz Island. Soon after, in the same area but closer to the Island, we found a probable mating pod of 4 Gray whales being followed by 10-20 sea lions. There was some fluke movement and rolling that we thought might be to encourage the sea lions, to move away, but after the sea lions were gone, it continued so Mat assumed it was possible positioning/mating behavior. The Art Program at California State University Channel Islands (CI) has announced ?Caring for Calves: The art and science of understanding Hawaii?s humpback whales? to be on exhibit Jan. 27 through Feb. 25 in the art gallery of Napa Hall. A public reception will be held on Thursday, Jan. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will include photographic work by: ? John Cesere, Dan Cesere - photographers and founders of C3 Submerged Photography ? Scientists: Rachel Cartwright, Ph.D. ? Marine Mammal Scientist, and founder of the Keiki Kohola Project, Blake Gillespie, Ph.D. ? physical biochemist ? CI students: J. Blair, R. Cano, A. Domingo, T. Dominicello, H. Martin, C.Mehlberg, L. Nguyen, A. Wall, B. Warmuth, A. Bonneau, L. Armstrong, K. Eden, J. Remonida, J. Perez, J. Warren, J. Penland, I. Espinoza, B. Villalta This exhibition is a photographic essay focusing on the Hawaiian humpback whale population and like many of our great whale populations, is a conservation success story. By the end of commercial whaling in the seventies, the numbers of whales to be seen in Hawaiian waters each year had fallen to below 500. Today, it is estimated that over 10,000 humpback whales from across the North Pacific congregate in the warm, protected waters of Hawaii each winter, to breed and raise their young calves. The Keiki Kohola Project aims to protect these critical nursery waters by providing up to date, accurate and new information on the behavior of mother-calf pairs in the region. The core of this mission is the development of science-based wildlife management strategies. An essential part of this goal is to reach beyond the scientific community and bring the research into focus for a wide and inclusive audience. Over the last two years, professional photographers John and Dan Cesere have joined the research team to assist in the documentation of the underwater behavior of whales. The Cesere brothers of C3 Submerged bring to the project the technical underwater imaging expertise and experience required for research-grade photography. They bring an uncanny ability to capture those moments, so fleeting in underwater encounters, which link the whales? grace and beauty to the behavioral details that allow us to know them better and manage them more effectively. CSU Channel Islands is located at One University Drive, Camarillo. The exhibit will be available for viewing Jan. 27 through Feb. 25 in the art gallery of Napa Hall. Exhibit hours are: Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information, contact the CI Art Program at 805-437-8570, or e-mail art at csuci.edu or visit http://art.csuci.edu. Sat 15 Jan Message-ID: <49F8DB14-1B01-4919-B89A-81CFB3616355@cox.net> HI folk, What a great day, calm seas AM & PM. AM 9 Grays 150 Common Dolphin Many Birds PM 4 Grays (1 maybe 2 ghost Humpbacks) Another great day on the water. Soooooo clear we could see both Santa Barbara and Catalina Islands from the back side of Anacapa. A bit hazy at that distance but definitely there. Total 13 Grays. In the morning we had 150 Common Dolphins racing into a feeding frenzy, birds, birds no where to be found, the seas totally empty of birds. And we were just commenting about that when suddenly they appeared out of no where to join in the frenzy. Crazy how the word gets out instantly and I saw not one iPhone on any of them. In the afternoon, about mid channel, we all saw one if not two straight up spouts well ahead. Moving steadily, and slowing as we approached the area, no show for better than 30 minuets. So off we went, thinking they would pop up on our leaving. Sure enough, about five minuets they came up well aft of us. Capt Lee made the big U turn heading back, spouts agin seen by all, but again, on approach, they were gone. Folks from many places in the US, and very locally were aboard the two runs, with one couple from Germany in the afternoon. Two Navy Sea Bees and, separately, one Navy Fire tech, ship board rocket trouble shooting technician were also enjoying the beautiful day at sea, searching for whales. It was a fun day with Laura Shelton keeping books, Captains Lee and Steve with Lorri doing their superb job of driving and running the Island Adventurer. We stayed with them for a bit then moved on, then Mat found a small group of Risso's that approached close to the boat and allowed for some good views by the passengers. We then headed toward the island to view a couple of more Grays that were in front of and behind us. Then we went to Painted Cave for good look inside. We headed a bit east past Fry's to watch a couple of more whales that were most likely the 2 from a little earlier. On busy days at Cabrillo Beach, even in the old days, like on the 4th of July, traffic in and out of that little refuge is horrendous. I will get there an hour early, park up near Point Fermin Park, and hike down to Cabrillo Beach and back. Such a ploy makes it the same hike as Scorpion to Cavern Pt. Nice view, too. As some of you know, over the years in addition to my role with the naturalist corps I have worked on and managed several projects here at the park. Recently, I have been given quite a few more projects to work on including a new ocean film, new tower/stairwell exhibits and kids outdoor exhibit area for the visitor center, redesigning and replacing every sign in the park, and eventually, new exhibits for Anacapa visitor center and lighthouse and for Santa Rosa Island as well. While these are all wonderful projects to work on, they do come at a cost. I regret to inform you that due to these new projects as well as other work duties I will no longer be able to maintain my role in the naturalist corps. I will miss this wonderful program and all of you. Thank you for giving me so many enjoyable years. It?s been a real pleasure working with all of you. The corps has truly become the public face of the sanctuary and park. Without your dedication and support there would be very little personal interpretation on the islands and boats. I cannot thank you enough for this incredible contribution. The good news is that you will be left in very, very good hands. David Begun, former island volunteer extraordinaire, and now park staff, will be taking my place as the park representative with the naturalist corps and will be overseeing the island hike portion of the program. David, as many of you know, is an incredible resource, extremely knowledgeable about island resources and operations and since he was a volunteer for over 15 years, has a great understanding of the volunteer program as well. He will be great asset to the program and I know you all will enjoy working with him very much as I have over the years. David will be contacting you shortly via email with his contact information. All island related questions should go directly to David at this point. Again thank you very much for so many wonderful years. The 60 Rissos were milling around just off of the west end of SCI, where they have apparently been all week. From there we could see spouts in the gap between SCI and SRI. Our first grey, spotted right near the Rissos, must have been confused by the island, because he was headed back out of the gap to continue on the inside and was very shy, so we went further into the gap, down by Christie Ranch, where we followed a single for a while and then a pair who were close behind, before breaking off and heading for Painted Cave. We saw at least 2 more spouts further out in the gap that we didn't investigate. Valerie Olson and I were the naturalists with Ilene on PID. Unfortunately there were only 12 passengers to enjoy this beautiful day. Totals for the two trips: 9 Gray Whales 800 Common Dolphins The morning trip had approximately 30 passengers who experienced calm seas and clear skies. About mid-channel we encountered a large pod of dolphins who were moving extremely fast. We thought something (??) might be causing them to move so rapidly, but after scanning the horizon behind them for quite some time we were unable to located anything coming up from behind. In the "Gap" near the west end of Anacapa we had 7 sightings of Gray's. Passengers were treated to some very good looks as these whales appeared to be trying to decide whether go behind or in front of the island. About 35 passengers were on the pm trip. Absolutely no dolphins sighted. We encountered 2 very shy and reclusive Gray's. Continued reports of Orcas in the channel may have been the reason for the scarcity of dolphins. Captain was assisted by DeeDee and Steve. Captain Lee Fleischer was aboard in his role as a CINC naturalist. Dick Bellman -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There were very large swells at the entrance to the Harbor with big surf on the beach but conditions out in the Channel were very calm.? AM trip: We had 72 guests who loved our time with a group of 500 common dolphins. Later on the South side of Anacapa, we followed 2 Gray whales at a distance of about 150 yards. We had great views due to the calm conditions. The trip to to visit the Sea Lions on the shores of East Anacapa was another highlight for our passengers. PM trip: 35 guests joined us in the afternoon. The swell at the harbor seemed even larger. We found a lone gray whale at the East end of Santa Cruz Island just entering the Gap and it breached one time at the beginning of the sighting. After that it stayed away and was below the surface so much that we went in search of other wildlife. With waters so calm, it was easy to see all around and we did not see another whale as we circumnavigated Anacapa.? We were called back to the Anacapa landing, quite unexpectedly toward the end of the trip, to pick up 8 grateful kayakers who had paddled over from the mainland and learned conditions on Sunday were not going to be optimal for the return to Oxnard. No boats were going to be available with such a forecast. They left kayaks, and tents to be taken down by Park rangers to get back with us. We found 1000 common dolphins on the way back which made our 35 very excited and we had a late return.? Wonderful day out on the Channel.? Under the huge tent, and around it, in the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium parking lot, an overflow crowd "Celebrated" and said thank you to to "one" of their own who truly made a difference in the world he left behind. He left that world sleeping outside along side his wife on their patio, as they always did, overlooking the ocean he loved. He did not wake to join the Polar Bear Club, which he founded, in their annual early New Year's Day swim in his beloved Cabrillo Beach, but the swim was made by all in his honor. This son of a father who walked to San Pedro from Mexico, and of a mother heralding Gabrielino Native American heritage, who as a youth had to overcome a speech impediment, was given a moving tribute by representatives of each of the following organizations: San Pedro High School where he was elected Student Body President, and as an Alum, seldom missed a football game; L A Parks and Recreation where-in he retired as a Captain of Life Guards; Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, which he started as a marine museum before Jacque Cousteau introduces SCUBA to marine science; Point Fermin Light House Society, for saving the Light House from demolition and returning its Fresnel lens after a 30 year search; American Cetacean Society, who closed their office at Pt Fermin to attend the memorial for one of their Founding Fathers; all local marine conservation organizations for being instrumental in establishing a Pt Fermin Marine Preserve in the tidal zone; Cabrillo Whale Watch for being possibly the first person in the world to convince sport fishing skippers that "watching" sea life might be as profitable as catching it; and most of all, by all in attendance, for being a Master Educator of young people in the value and beauty of the sea. In reference to the latter, I myself remember in the the mid 50s when our Explorer Scout troop gathered the biggest crowds at our "interpretive" booth in the floor of the Los Angeles Coliseum, at a Scout-O-Rama, by displaying a live Grunion Hatching exhibit, using Cabrillo Beach sand supplied by outings with John Olguin, and a salt water aquarium ( luckily under a full or new moon in summer ). We explained in detail the conservation laws related to this fish: That you could only catch it with your bare hands, and still needed a fishing license, which helped fund all Fish and Game research at the time. Taxes never went to this cause in California back then! Sincerely, Paul -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I feel that Derek and Shauna's leadership of the naturalist corps has been excellent and I plan to maintain a consistent style of management. The work you do as volunteers for the park and sanctuary has a huge impact on the visitor experience. Additionally, it helps to create a greater stewardship among the public which has a very positive impact on the Channel Islands, their surrounding waters and the wildlife within. I have experienced first-hand not only the value of what the naturalist corps provides, but also the dedication and competency of the naturalists. American Oyster Catchers Gulls Cormorants Ca Brown Pelicans Loon (in harbor) On our route from CI Harbor, across the channel through the Anacapa Passage and to the south side of Anacapa Island is where we encountered two juvenile grays that were leisurely sounding with no spouts. After observing several soundings we broke off and motored to Arch Rock, a close look revealed sea lions hauled out on the rocks among oyster catchers and cormorants on Anacapa. As we passed Arch Rock, perched pelicans and cormorants made forphoto ops with the setting sun. Making our return to CIH a spout was investigated to reveal a small pod of Orcas that briefly made their way to us then turned and headed away. As we approached the harbor about 25 surfers were enjoying the the large swells off Silver Strand Beach. It was a fine day with calm seas and a light breeze enjoyed by locals and visitors from Minnesota, Canada and Germany. Bill Wakelee and I engaged the 30 visitors that left delighted with the fine cruise skippered by Capt Jason and mates, Dee Dee and Luke. - Mike Sos -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The fox held it's right rear leg up when standing and displayed a limp, though slight, when running. I spotted him near the bottom of Lower Camp. He wore a collar, so is an older fox. They and chaperones, parents and teachers, numbered 112! Andrea, Laurie, and Danielle got great accolades from the teachers and parents on the way back home for the great interpretive programs and hikes they organized for the huge group (dividing it into 3). I had it easy, with 5 of 7 remaining day hikers who got off at Scorpion joining in on the Cavern Point hike. Carolyn Mc Cleskey joined us, before returning to the Visitor Center duty. Captain Anthony and deckhand Luke took the rest, who did not get off to kayak or camp at Scorpion, to Prisoners. It was a "see forever" day from Cathedral Point! You could see almost the entire historical Chumash coastline on the mainland, from Point Conception, anyway, to Point Magu. There was no limit, excepting for the horizon, to the visibility! Four of us went on the Potato Harbor to marvel the view. Everything was green, and Meadowlark songs filled the air with constant background music. We saw 4 fox in the camp area on the way back. Included in this sighting was the lame fox, but no one mentioned a collar. On the way over the kids were thrilled beyond joy at the playful bow riding and stern wake surfing of a pod of 400 common Dolphin half way across that stayed with us a long time. Topping this off, Skipper Anthony diverted within a mile of the landing to view a southerly migrating pair of Grays. Waters were calm and non of the "energetic" kids got sea sick, coming or going. Of particular interest archeologically, at Potato Harbor, we encountered an archeological team from UCSB leaving their 2 vehicle carts to hike to a more distant dig. The professor in charge said they were researching an ancient midden dated to be a least 8,500 years, witch had mixed deposits of shells and chert tools. While eating lunch and enjoying the view, we saw them working the dig on the distant hillside directly west of the Potato harbor overlook. The professor confirmed that this finding will change our current interpretive narrative which dates some of the 3000 middens on the island going back to 7,500 years. However, what about attacking this slaughter of dolphin for profit, at the source of the problem, where it is misunderstood. These dolphin are gathered ostensibly to showcase their intelligence and sociability with humans. Whether we like the idea of dolphins in captivity, or not, the real fact is that all who witness this interaction with dolphins gains a sympathetic love and appreciation for them, just as my generation did with Flipper on TV. The other real fact is, unless they have seen the movie "The Cove", they do not have a clue about what this growing educational and social interaction with dolphin is doing to the vast majority of dolphin of the pods from which they came! On Oahu, Hawaii last late July, I walked up to Sea Life Park while spending a day at Makapu Beach. After touring the aquarium for the first time in decades, I witnessed a trained dolphin show going on. After the show, I talked to the young trainers, who were feeding and petting the stars of the show in a very loving and obviously appreciated manner. I casually brought "The Cove" into the conversation. To a trainer, they had not seen it, for the very same reason many of our own CINC refuse to see it. They did not want to witness such brutality toward the animals that they loved. Also, their impression about the dolphin being butchered for consumption was totally unconnected to their love and care of the animals right there sharing affection with them. So, why not an email campaign sending the reality of witnessed dolphin slaughter, AND ITS CONNECTION TO THE AUCTION OF RESORT AND RESEARCH DOLPHINS , to the very companies and institutions that buy them- and to their trainers. I can easily follow up on this, for example, and forward Catherine's friend's eyewitness blog account to Sea Life Park. Is there a legal twist in sending someone's email or blog around in this manner without their approval? This would not be an attacking warpath mode of encounter, but rather one of interpretation between naturalist with different backgrounds. In this day an age, such a email campaign should be a piece of cake, much easier than old time chain letters. Everywhere we travel, even virtually now, we can do this! As I was talking with 2 young guys, I was thinking of what Russell said at the meeting last week about how we make a difference and often don't know it. Today I was standing nearby 2 young guys (early 20's) and one says to me "Sir, Can you verify for me what my friend is saying about seals that wave their arms up out of the water?" I said "Sure, actually they are Sea Lions and they raise their flippers out of the water to increase their body temperature - it's called thermo regulating". His jaw dropped to the ground in total amazement that his friend had most of the story right! I went on to explain the difference between a seal and a sea lion and this young, somewhat cocky, yet pleasant guy was again amazed by these simple facts that we all take for granted. I saw his attitude change from the young "yeah, right, whatever 20-something attitude" to one where he was very interested in learning about the Channel Islands area His friend had seemed to convince him to go on this trip with no expectations other than a cool boat ride. They both had recently moved here from Boise, ID so this was an entirely new experience. After talking to him for a bit he said "I have always been afraid of the ocean, ya know the sharks and all". I explained briefly what is happening to the worldwide shark populations with shark finning and shark fin soup and he had never heard anything about this topic. Nothing. I could actually see an attitude adjustment and even told him that this was why I was on the boat - to educate people about the natural resources we have here but also how things that happen here affect the entire planet. He became more inquisitive and continued to ask more questions. After I realized he was not just being a smart *** kid but really was listening and taking to heart what I was saying I told him that he can take this new knowledge back to Idaho and share what he had learned. He then said "I'm diggin' this, this is kinda cool!" As I was talking, a couple pelagic cormorants flew by in front of the boat. I pointed them out to these guys and some other birds as we were cruising along SCI. Then came another response: "You even know about the birds here! Wow" We also asked about getting on the island and we talked about hiking and camping and how he could explore in more depth each of the Channel Islands. I think we will have a repeat customer here! He probably went home and wrote a blurb on his Facebook page but there won't be any pictures to upload because he was bummed he forgot his camera. I guess it will be my little secret about what I still don't know but was happy to make such a positive impression on this young mind today. Message-ID: Dear CINC and marine life enthusiast, Yesterday, on the Vagabond trip to Anacapa with the Ice Plant kids and leaders, and Catherine French, as the day Hike leader, we had a discussion bounced around, going and coming, about the resurrection of the dolphin slaughter in The Cove at Taiji, Japan. It was agreed amongst we that discussed the matter, that both emails to the Japanese Ambassador and to various Aquariums with dolphin programs, with an attached account of recent blog eye witness accounts, was a good ploy. I just emailed the Ambassador, with the comment that I have not purchased, and will not purchase, anything made in Japan until their government stops its support for an archaic dolphin fishing industry spin-off from live dolphin auctions: Releasing instead of killing. What choice is smarter for their struggling economy: a local dolphin fisheries or a healthier world trade? I also emailed Sea Life Park in Hawaii, actually thanking them for not partaking in the Taiji Auctions for their dolphins, and suggesting they, like the huge London Aquarium on the Thames River in England, embark on a "Save the Dolphins and the Whales" educational campaign? In both cases, the Jan 28th blog from the Taiji slaughter was pasted. So, in both cases above, the reality of boycott is posed as a threat against a desire for profit. The documentation of this secret dolphin slaughter in the award winning "The Cove" implied strongly that this boycott tool be used to save these dolphin, as do our current courageous bloggers. BUT WHEREVER THE TOOL OF BOYCOTT IS APPLIED, IT DISGRACES THE INTELLIGENCE OF OUR DOLPHIN UNDERSEA COUSINS TO BOYCOTT OUT OF ??? THE VERY DOCUMENTATION SO COURAGEOUSLY OBTAINED TO EXPOSE THE SLAUGHTER! It shocks me find out more and more, how many of those sympathetic to the dolphins plight, refused to go see The Cove. These documentations, like all movies, get more showings when more turn out to see them! How smart is it to effectively join a boycott of the people who don't want them shown at all!? Food for thought, and ways to take action now, if so inclined, Paul Petrich -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The boats were fairly full, but not packed. Lots of great people with great questions and enthusiasm. Both trips involved going around the back side of Anacapa and thru the gap between Anacapa and Santa Cruz. The morning trip found one southbound gray whale, providing an average sort of viewing experience. No dolphins were found on the morning trip. On the back side of Anacapa there was a large male elephant seal, a female and newish pup. The next cove over had a large group of CA sea lions. The afternoon trip found zero gray whales, but one large group of commons (700-1000), and later a mid-sized group, and couple of small scattered handfuls, here and there. The elephant seals were still maintaining their cove on Anacapa. There were numerous concentrated patches of cormorants near Anacapa. And a LOT of those cute little Xantus Murrelets diving as the boat got near. Always nice to be on the water, wished there were more whales for people to experience, but such things we can not control. He made reference to a movie he saw that sounded like The Cove but it sounded like it was renamed and edited for release in China; the oceans problems are very slanted as a problem with the Japanese people according to him. Since he was engaging and educated I asked about shark finning and he basically said "China doesn't do that - it must be Taiwanese boats". I could tell the info he was getting was highly filtered thru his communist China. I did more listening than talking and it was very interesting! He did say that the trip he was on he read about in a Lonely Planet book he bought at home in Beijing. Changing subjects, he started talking about trade and how all the things he had (American brand name clothes, really nice Canon camera and lens, other guy had a nice Nikon camera were all bought in China ( and made in China ).
