5 Gray whales (more in the distance)
4 Orca
Island Packers added the afternoon trip on Tuesday 1/18 to accommodate a group of scientists who are in Ventura for a conference. The passengers were a highly curious group from all over the world. The first group of 3 gray whales we observed slowly traveling through the gap between Santa Cruz Island & Anacapa Island. 5 minute breathing cycles with an occasional tail fluke from 1 when sounding.
The pod of 4 Orcas were observed on the South side of Anacapa travelling west toward Santa Cruz. They surfaced together and were swimming in close proximity. We observed as they veered off toward the group of 3 gray whales, wondering if there would be contact; which there was not.
There were 2 more gray whales which were about 400 yards off.
Thank you Capt Jimmy, Joel, and Thomas. It was a wonderful day in the Channel.
My best,
