Captains Matt and Dave headed the CX east in hopes of avoiding the winds that were to be building in the western portion of the channel. Our initial sighting was the pod of very frisky, aka very amorous common dolphins. Outstanding looks with a significant amount of mating behavior taking place. Our next sighting was the cow-calf pair of Humpbacks. Passengers were treated to numerous looks. However Sally Eagle on PID was not presented with many photo-ops of tail flukes. Moving further east towards the east end of Santa Cruz where there have been sightings of Blues. We did, indeed, encounter Blues at about the same time the wind that was supposed to be in the west and not pick up till late in the day moved east and picked up early. Captains Matt and Dave worked diligently to take us back into the weather to get looks at the Blues of which there were more than the 6 that were documented. We also released a juvenile California Sea Lion that have been rescued from (true story) the living room of a home approximately 1/2 mile from the beach. Amazing. The trip back was rugged to say the least. With spray reaching all uncovered portions of the boat there was no way those affected with the mal de mer could deal with their malady at the rail. The last dose of over the wheelhouse spray occurred as we reached the green harbor buoy!!! Almost the entire load was in the cabin and Brooke was busy meeting people needs. In addition to Sally on PID, Laura Shelton was the other naturalist. Dick -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Today we had a good look at one solitary male Humpback Captain Mat recognized "Ol' Stubby Tail." Ol Stubby gave us a lot of fluke shows with his abbreviated end piece. No dolphin showed today. We did have the sea lions, pelicans, and Storm Petrels all give our passengers good photo opts. Our passengers represented the UK, Germany, Austria,Taiwan, Mass., NV., Ariz., and in minority, CA. One from the UK is setting an unofficial record on the Condor X! He and his wife now come straight to Santa Barbara every year on their vacation, shunning other CA and sights in the USA previously visited. The husbands goal is to spend every day in Santa Barbara whale watching on the Condor Express! He will get in 9 straight days this trip (his wife took time off to go shopping). Viability was good with north vista from Point Conception to Point Magu visible. We also had a great view of most of the north shore of Santa Cruz Island, as the skippers turned eastward as we approached the midpoint of the island. Questions about the islands and their cultural histories were aplenty, and answered. Winds predicted did not match yesterday's , but about ten of the bravest passengers thrilled at holding on to the rails on the bouncing ride home along the coast from about Rincon Point. I had no idea about the picnic. The short notice for the event is due to Union Ale offerring to donate the space for an event on June 8th, and since it is World Oceans Day we jumped at the chance to use it as a way to introduce our new volunteer program. Please know, though, that this will not be the only opportunity to learn about Channelkeeper's MPA Watch. While they're not scheduled yet, I will be giving a number of presentations on the program including more specific volunteer training workshops for anyone interested in participating. Alternatively, I would be more than happy to meet or talk to you individually about the program. Given the amount of outreach and education that will be needed to implement this program, I don't envision the program officially off the ground until early July. > > Again, I am very sorry for the short notice and for the scheduling conflict with the CINC event. > > Please don't hesitate to contact me with any other questions or concerns. Naturalists Debra Herring and John Kuizenga (PID), with trainee Rose Messina joined yours truly for a ride to Santa Cruz Island and subsequent whale watch with two separate groups of people. First we landed around 20-25 Cleveland Elementary School sixth grade students at Prisoners Harbor for the school?s annual camping trip. Capt. Dave and mate Dennis arranged a safe and efficient disembarking, and we were off in search of whales. A sharp-eyed lady from Florida spotted our first blue near the east end of SC, and it probably had a calf with it. I saw what looked like a calf and several passengers reported a ?baby whale,? but it was a brief sighting and most did not see the pair. At that point the passenger list was mainly participants (and their families) from a Santa Barbara conference of independent petroleum producers. These folks came from various states (California, Oklahoma, Texas, North Carolina) and from as far as Norway. Other nationalities (not conferees) aboard were German and French. One remarkable event from the trip was spotting a virtually circular ice halo around the sun. This is an optical phenomenon produced in hazy skies when sunlight refracted through hexagonal ice crystals produces a fuzzy disk?called a 22 degree halo?with colored outer fringes of red and blue. (Thanks, Wikipedia.) Dennis said he had seen this halo a number of other times recently. With a great mix of new naturalists and seasoned veterans that would facilitate getting to know each other. I will have some stick on name tags available if you forget. - Remember that spouses and significant others are most welcome and we look forward to meeting whomever you might bring. - If you have forgotten to rsvp, don't worry - we have a pretty good handle on expected numbers (it will be a good turnout) and will have plenty of supplies - just come. Remember, if you don't come we will probably talk about you!!! - We will have paper plates and plastic utensils available, but bringing your own, non disposable items will be environmentally friendly. Paul wanted to utilize paper cups for wine, however, I drew the line on that one. We will have plastic wine cups for those who need one. I will only drink wine from a paper cup if drinking straight from the bottle is the only other option!!! There is a recycling container at our site. - Those that are able to help with set-up, if you would arrive sometime before 5:00, that would be helpful. Thanks in advance to those who help. Just remember, that everyone is on the clean-up committee!! It shouldn't rain, nor should the wind be howling. It is supposed to be sunny, at least partly. But, being naturalists who encounter all types of conditions out on the water, we will take whatever nature throws our way on Wednesday. See you at the picnic. Message-ID: <210684FA-8D70-4389-B617-D5E66B5D0861@me.com> Ahoy CINC, CINP, CINMS, and friends, First good news. On Carolyn Green's organized invasive plant attack on ESCI today, we made a big dent in the Oyster Plant invasion by surgically scooping dandelion like puffs into bags, and router rooting the carrot like roots out of the ground, due to the very recent rains.! Second Good News. On the way over the Ranger dropped of Peter Sharp, Eagle Expert Extraordinary , and his team on West Anacapa where he went to investigate a reported new Bald Eagle nest. On our return, the Ranger stopped to pick them up. Peter happily reported that a healthy 6-7 week old chick was tagged and given a transformer. The proud parents were two SCI parents. Peter also said there is a possibility that another chick was rustling around in the nearby brush. The two new nests on Santa Rosa Island have failed, but 5 of 7 on Catalina have chicks! Total Bald Eagles on all 8 islands are 70-75 right now. Peter said the lone reported Golden Eagle floating around SRI is not so apparent right now. Third Good News. The weather was fantastic on the islands, on the trip back, and at Rincon Point when I stopped there to check it out on the way home! We ordered it, and it is here. Be there are be square! Wear your name tag on anything comfortable. No reservation required. It is a very informal picnic social. Just bring yourself and your own preferred drink and food. Afternoon winds in the Oxnard Plain-Ventura area, if there are any, do not ravage the Rincon. Paul Petrich -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I noticed a small sea lion hauled out on the beach west of the pier as the 9:30 boat arrived. As Tiffany was doing the camper orientation, he (she) climbed up to where all the camping gear was and started poking around it. It had everyone's attention and was obviously not afraid of people. Not knowing it's history at the time, we couldn't figure out what it was doing! We did all we could to keep the visitors away from it, but that was hard as it kept coming up to people. Finally the crowd dispersed and it went to sleep on a rock right where the pier connects to the land. We relayed the tag number (23046) to Capt. Anthony who was moored. He radioed the CX and they confirmed that it was the rehab sea lion you released on Wed. As the 10:30 boat was arrived, it perked up and started heading down the pier. There were some kayaks stacked along the railing and I used them to block his further progress. It decided to try to go between the kayaks and the edge and finally decided that wasn't going to work, so looked down at the water and dove right in! Everyone on the Vanguard was watching and cheered when it hit the ater and swam slowly around. Fortunately, it swam away and wasn't seen until departure time, when it was a it with the 4th grade school group waiting to depart. It's pretty challenging keeping people away from this little guy as he obviously has no fear of humans and is quite adorable. It makes enforcing the MMPA difficult. We put the sign out to try to help. Hopefully it figures out that he should be a little more afraid of people and will go on its way. If not, it may have to be relocated because hanging around Scorpion will not be good for it in the long run. Do you have any idea of the sex and age of this little sea lion? Enjoy, Vic Dolphins use double sonar Lund, Sweden (SPX) Jun 09, 2011 Dolphins and porpoises use echolocation for hunting and orientation. By sending out high-frequency sound, known as ultrasound, dolphins can use the echoes to determine what type of object the sound beam has hit. Researchers from Sweden and the US have now discovered that dolphins can generate two sound beam projections simultaneously. "The beam projections have different frequencies and can be sent in different directions. The advantage is probably that the dolphin can locate the object more precisely", says Josefin Starkhammar, a newly examined doctor in Electrical Measurements at Lund University, who also holds a Master's degree in Engineering Physics. The study, which was carried out together with scientists from San Diego, was published in the latest issue of the journal Biology Letters. The co-authors of the article were Patrick W. Moore, Lois Talmadge and Dorian S. Houser, who work at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in the USA. "The findings add fuel to an already fierce debate in the research community on how the echolocation sound is produced", says Josefin Starkhammar. Dr Starkhammar's own guess is that the two sound projections come from the two different sound-producing organs, the existence of which is well known, but it was believed that only one was active during echolocation. She stresses that more research is needed. For example, the two projections could also be explained by complicated reflections in the head of the dolphin, where the sound is formed. "It is also somewhat remarkable that this has only been discovered now. Research has been carried out on dolphins and echolocation since the 1960s", says Josefin Starkhammar. One explanation as to why the discovery has taken so long is that this research requires recently developed and quite advanced measuring equipment and signal processing techniques. In addition, until now it has mostly been biologists who have conducted research on dolphins, and their expertise is often not in this specific area of technology. Furthermore, the research requires dolphins trained to answer scientific questions! The combination of marine biologists and engineers is ideal, in Josefin Starkhammar's view. To help her she has developed a device with 47 hydrophones (microphones for use in water). "It is currently one of the best devices in the world for capturing dolphins' ultrasound in water", says Josefin Starkhammar, who has spent a lot of time testing and developing the equipment, including at Kolmarden Wildlife Park, where one of her supervisors works. There she has also conducted other studies on dolphins and their echolocation. Bats also use echolocation and there are a few species of shrew and some cave-dwelling birds which use a simpler form of the method. Even humans have developed devices that use echolocation and ultrasound technology. "However, dolphins' echolocation is in many ways much more sophisticated. Evolution has had the possibility to hone it over millions of years. Therefore, we humans have a lot to learn from dolphins. What is more, the knowledge could be important in finding ways to protect dolphins, for example, from noise disturbance", says Josefin Starkhammar. This was a private charter for Pescatores, a delightful group of long time Santa Barbara residents who meet socially on a regular basis. These members including Condor Express owner Capt. Fred Benko and guests were awed by all the wildlife. Partly cloudy skies with scale like sea ripples prevailed throughout the trip. Whale behaviors seen were lunge feeding, breaching, pec slapping, chin slapping, spy hopping, logging (stationary behavior), fluking, and milling. Captains Fred and Mat provided educational comments on sightings and Santa Cruz Island, with a nice visit to Painted Cave. Supplemental comments were also made by CINC newbie naturalist Michael Berg, and veteran naturalists Debra Herring and Gary Delanoeye. A good time was had by all. I had 9 visitors join me on the Cavern Pt. hike, and the 5 of them who were from landlocked locales ( Switzerland and Oklahoma ) followed me to Potato Harbor. From start to the end, CI Fox sightings excited them all! Sea Lions were also abundant, and they were barking loudly at at both Cavern Pt and Potato Harbor. The only negative was the poor visibility; No view of the expansive range of Chumash nation was visible on the mainland. Of the 45 passengers, half were attending an important archeological conferencing session on the island pertinent to the possible local display of the first Chumash archeological discoveries made on the islands. The Santa Barbara Chumash Council leaders were present, as were the Superintendents of the CINP and CINMS, and administrators from the SB Museum of Natural History. A French archeologist was the pioneer in researching and collecting Chumash artifacts on the island, and these remain in a French museum. What is being discussed, is a possible traveling exhibit of these artifacts that will show them at the SB Museum of Natural History. Stay tuned. Pancho said Scammond's Lagoon also reported their 2nd largest count, but he was not sure what it wast! Capt. Dave and two of his crew, Jean and Patty, reported their own happy count for the day. We had a diverse group of passengers and several visiting Marine Mammal Center volunteers headed by long time volunteer and now staff member: ?Lisa Harper Henderson. She educated all of us about Guadalupe Fur Seals and their organization's 600 mile territory all the way to several hours north of Sand Francisco where they respond to marine mammal entanglement and rescue calls. The seals came from San Luis Obispo County.?She also ?taught us all about what a released balloon with attached ribbon can do in a worst case scenario in ?her discussion of entanglements.? Cubby gave a rousing interactive talk about the channel and whales and dolphins with great flair as we left the harbor. Marilyn added a great description of the PID role. We found 500 common dolphins in very glassy waters several miles out. It was foggy but so GLASSY that we all enjoyed great looks.? It was so foggy it was a little hard to tell where we were but Capt Dave and Capt Mat kept us informed. We found 3 humpback whales traveling east including a calf near the west end of Santa Cruz. Marilyn said she got fluke id shots of all but the calf for the day. ? Then we released the male and female seals in front of the west end of Santa Cruz. We learned the two seals did not get along well during?their rehab stay(they were found in separate locations in late April and May) and they swam in opposite directions. None of the Marine Mammal Center reps were surprised. Capt Dave and other CIMWI reps were also there to assist in the release.? We then went over to Painted Cave, spotted three more humpbacks not far from PC and headed back to the harbor.? Thanks! ?Great June Gloom Day! Happy passengers! Gulls, gulls, gulls, and more gulls. Western gulls are in prime protective behavioral mode. They are especially aggressive on the northern loop, and may/have/will peg folks randomly (meaning with beaks). Island hikers make sure to thoroughly express gull adult and chick etiquette in the orientation. The south trail is much easier to hike on, and less invasive to the very heavily populated gull territories. A highlight of Sat.'s trip: 9 yr. old Naomi, Maya, and 5 yr. old Gabriel completed their Junior Ranger booklets (for their appropriate age assigned pages), and were sworn in by Ranger Josh Kaye-Carr. My corrections are below in brackets. Second Good News. On the way over the Ranger dropped of Peter Sharp [spelled Sharpe :)], Eagle Expert Extraordinary [only expert on Channel Island eagles], and his team on West Anacapa where he went to investigate a reported new Bald Eagle nest. On our return, the Ranger stopped to pick them up. Peter happily reported that a healthy 6-7 week old chick [8-9 weeks old] was tagged and given a transformer [transmitter]. The proud parents were two SCI parents. Peter also said there is a possibility that another chick was rustling around in the nearby brush [I heard some strange calling occasionally, but don't know if it was an eagle and couldn't find anything]. The two new nests on Santa Rosa Island have failed, but 5 of 7 [4 of 7] on Catalina have chicks! Total Bald Eagles on all 8 islands are 70-75 [I'm including chicks in nests] right now. Peter said the lone reported Golden Eagle floating around SRI is not so apparent right now [I said there were some sightings of goldens on Cruz earlier this year, but nothing lately]. Tatro) Date: Fri, 24 Jun 2011 20:51:31 -0700 Subject: [CINC] Condor, Friday, 24 june, '11 Message-ID: Hi folks, Data: Jellies Mola Mola, small group 9+ Humpbacks 5+ Blues 8 Orca (including one calf) Brian in the cabin, and I on the upper deck, we gave our intro presentation to the 56 intrepid whale watchers. We left Santa Barbara Harbor with the usual stop at the outer buoy to enjoy the California Sea Lions, seemingly resident there. On into the mist, of our beautiful fog/low cloud June day, off to seek another day like yesterday. Of course no day on the Channel is the same and this one was its own day as well. Shortly some Jellies were spotted as well as a few Mola Molas (I did not see them but several others did, same with the Jellies) We were out past the shipping lanes heading toward the shelf off of Santa Rosa Island. Captain Mat decided to stop for some reason, and up popped the Orca pod. The captain was as surprised as any of us. It was not the reason he stopped. Whatever it was it was totally lost in the joy and excitement of seeing these beautiful animals. At first they were in two groups on each side of us, then they merged for a good time and parting again. The calf was easily seen, tracking with presumably its mother. They were moving slowly so we hung with them for some time, eventually parting toward our original destination. Good thing as it was not too long that we cam upon our first Humpback, a loner, which after a bit became two. It was not a great fluking day. Seems the Humpbacks had the Blues, this day, on fluking. Then we came on another and another with some in the distance. But no fluking. AH ha!! Our first Blue, then two. Folks were in awe, yes, ... they are that big. More Humpbacks showed and soon more Blues. The numbers were less than Thursdays sitings, but a very fine day of it just the same. Tracking a couple more Humpbacks, one of them became very generous and gave us one nice fluke. No Blues fluked on this run but it was a great day of it, with the Orca show the star attraction, for sure. Yes, overcast for most of the day with sun breaking out later as the winds picked up in the west end and the sea followed. So it was time to head back, ... from, still, a very beautiful day on the cannel. Finally, Captain Mat, made it official, announced it was time to head home, fired up the engines, and up popped a juvenile Humpback right next to the boat, slowly moving on, ... guess it was wishing us well as we departed and headed home. Capt. Mat, Capt. Dave, and Matt in the galley did their usual fine job of finding the whales and taking care of the folks. Shirley Johnson on PID, Brian Resnik and I chatted it up with the folks from UK, Chile, Mn, Chicago, Camarillo, and one couple traveled in all the way from Santa Barbara to the Condor. Ken Tatro From dean.benjamin at sbcglobal.net Sat Jun 25 18:18:35 2011 From: dean.benjamin at sbcglobal.net (Dean Benjamin) Date: Sat, 25 Jun 2011 18:18:35 -0700 Subject: [CINC] Islander 6/25 Message-ID: <83EDFE6EAAD64CF78C462910E9BC24D9@HomeLaptop> Statistics: 7 Blue Whales including 1 juvenile 5 Humpbacks 2,000 Common Dolphins It began with dense fog, but by the time we dropped off some folks at Prisoners, blue skies started to peek through and the winds began to blow. We cruised the shoreline of SCI and despite the freshening winds and building seas, Captain Lombardi got us well into Painted Cave. Then off to the west end of SCI where we came upon a pod of 1,000 Common Dolphins. Continuing west, we landed in the krill garden where there were lots of Blue and Humpback Whales. The numbers observed were greater than the official number reported. Behavior included a great deal of surface lunge feeding. The seas continued to build as did the winds and a quarter of the passengers had some difficulty, but they loved the experience none the less (I heard many saying so as they departed). Passengers were from the UK, Indiana, San Diego, Palm Springs.. On the way home, we saw another pod of Common Dolphins, perhaps more than the 1,000 recorded but it was such a dense congregation, it was unlike anything I had ever seen. Along with Captain Anthony were Luke and Andrea and naturalist Linda Hitt. Great job Anthony, managing through the many animals, rough seas, high winds, keeping safe, and making it as smooth as you did. Anyone who has had to sail or heave to in such conditions can appreciate such skill. Dean enjamin -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Capt. Dave pre-warned everyone that the perfect weather here at the dock was not indicative of what was to come about 5-8 miles out. Everyone boarded and just a handful had any issues for Matt and Dennis to deal with. The official Blue Whale count for the day is 5 with 3 in the immediate area that I got good PID shots of and another 2 others out of camera range. There were other spouts in distance (probably both species) but we had quite the show with the 3 Blues. They were surfacing feeding, rolling and what at times seemed to be a little racing behavior. At times they were swimming very fast, rolling around, splashing, and showing ? a tail or the side flipper and lunge feeding. Krill could be seen at the surface in many patches. There was the usual group of sea lions at the buoy with a waiting list to board. While waiting for a space to open up on the buoy they were thermoregulating. Lots more were seen on SCI high up on the rocks, swimming around and on the small rocky beaches. We also saw a small group of Harbor Seals hauled out on SCI too. We saw about 400 Commons with about 6-8 Pacific White-sided mixed into the group of which maybe 25% of the dolphins were little ones and of course more sea lions playing in the mix. As for the birds, lots of sooty shearwaters fat and filling up on krill and many pigeon guillemots flying around the island. Besides these birds there were a few gulls, cormorants and pelicans - definitely a whale day not a bird day. For you veterans, this calf is the child of "Rope," a mature female we have seen almost every season for the past 9 or 10 years. Rope gets her name from the fact that she was entangled in fishing gear and had a rope tightly wound around her when she was first identified. Michael Smith told me once that this rope was polypropylene line, so early on some called her "Poly." She somehow shed the rope and gear and is left with a prominent scar around her body which is how we identify her nowadays. This is her 3rd calf in ten years. Mom and calf can be seen together out on the feeding grounds, and photos are online at: http://www.condorexpressphotos.com/Other/2011-06-25-SB-Channel best fishes and have a WHALE of a day!
