Pelagic cormorant
Pigeon guillemot
Island photographer Tim Hauf stayed overnight from Wed. Check out his site www.timhaufphotography.com
Saturday June 18, 2011 AI via the Vanguard
Common Dolphins
77 people landing including kayakers and campers
Fellow Naturalist Doug Williams also led a hike and stayed overnight.
Gulls, gulls, gulls, and more gulls. Western gulls are in prime protective behavioral mode. They are especially aggressive on the northern loop, and may/have/will peg folks randomly (meaning with beaks). Island hikers make sure to thoroughly express gull adult and chick etiquette in the orientation. The south trail is much easier to hike on, and less invasive to the very heavily populated gull territories.
A highlight of Sat.'s trip: 9 yr. old Naomi, Maya, and 5 yr. old Gabriel completed their Junior Ranger booklets (for their appropriate age assigned pages), and were sworn in by Ranger Josh Kaye-Carr.
You can watch Channel Islands Live Hikes and Dives from Anacapa Island in the comfort of your own computer chair, or the CINP VC auditorium. Go to www.nps.gov/chis then click your way to Channel Islands Live, then to the program or web cam you desire to visit. This season's schedule is as follows:
Wednesdays through Saturdays
Live Hike 11:00 am
Live Dive 2:00 pm
Both programs are approximately 20 minutes.
Happy Trails,
Debra
