It was a cool day, but calm seas and clear skies. Marty Flam shared his expertise at the Visitor's center and I took 15 on the Cavern Point hike. For this CINC volunteer it was a day for a record sighting number of island foxes: about 10! One even sighted on the barren eroded expanses just east of Cavern Point. I have not seen so many in one day on the island since volunteer fence building in the late 1980s. Other sightings: Peregrine falcons off Cavern Point, a Rhinoceros Auklet skimming waves close to the boat, and Common Dolphin playing in our wake not far off the anchorage. Interesting passengers included a young lady 10 years old and her mother, who were on there last leg of a year long journey exploring our National Parks and State parks from near their home in Maryland through Michigan, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Washington, British Columbia, Alaska, Oregon, Northern California and the Sierras, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and the best for last, Southern California deserts and the CINP! Of course home teaching was expected along the way, and the young lady, in return, will have a lot to share with her class mates. Capt. Matt headed up the coast with 25 passengers from all over the map. We did find a small pod of Common Dolphins just out of the harbor with a large flock of cormorants and gulls. Further along the coast 3 Bottlenose Dolphins joined us for a short time. No whales were seen so Capt. Matt turned offshore near Platform Holly and followed the 100 fathom line back east. Nothing was sighted until we were just south of the 4 platforms where 3 spouts were seen. They were grays but were spread out so that we followed one who was co-operative and did tail fluke for us. Also about 30 Common Dolphins swam by to the delight of the passengers. We were about 20 minutes late getting in but the passengers were pleased that whales were finally seen. We stayed a week at a time and travelled all over the TNC's part of the island. Mr. Stanton was still alive and running his island business concern from the main ranch, so we lived in the outlying cabin. I can honestly testify that our many, many encounters with our friendly foxes, both in the field and around our cabin, was every bit as friendly as they are today. Actually, the characteristic is not friendliness, so much as obliviousness to us, just as today, with no effort to hide. And the numbers are only now getting to what we then encountered. Also, as I recall, way back in 1963 while stationed on San Nicholas Island for two weeks with the Marines, this amazing "not so sly" trait was shown by the few we saw, totally amazing us. On Sat. I was at the SCI Visitor Center for the day and no whales or dolphin were seen crossing both directions. But everyone I talked to on the island had close encounters with the Island Fox! As your Representative, I appreciate you taking the time to share your views with me on this legislation. > > > > You will be pleased to learn that we are in complete agreement. I recently voted against H.R. 1 when it was considered by the House of Representatives, in large part because the bill seeks to make severe funding cuts to a host of programs the American people rely on to protect and conserve the environment. > > > > Specifically, the proposed continuing resolution would make drastic cuts to programs that safeguard America's parks and wildlands. For example, H.R. 1 proposed a nearly $400 million reduction to the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) ? an incredibly successful program that provides funds to local governments, states, and federal agencies to protect key natural areas. Since its creation, the fund has awarded grants to dozens of projects in my congressional district that have preserved open space and protected sensitive ecosystems. Through the LWCF, the federal government has supported parks and recreation facilities, and it has protected some of our most special places, like the Channel Islands National Park and the lands around the Morro Bay National Estuary. > > > > As you mentioned in your letter, several of my colleagues also offered amendments that would have further reduced environmental and land conservation programs. For example, Rep. Dean Heller offered amendment #482 that would have eliminated the authority of the President to create national monuments under the Antiquities Act. Since 1906, 14 Presidents have designated more than 120 monuments across our country. Congress has subsequently converted many of them, such as the Grand Canyon, to national parks. The Presidential national monument designation enables these beautiful and uniquely American landscapes to be protected and preserved for posterity. That is why, I voted against Rep. Heller's amendment, which failed by a vote of 209-213 and was not incorporated into the underlying legislation of H.R. 1. > > > > Given these and other attacks on our public lands, wildlife, and the environment within the continuing resolution, fighting these harmful cuts will be among my top priorities in the coming days and weeks. As i understand below only one in our little town of Carpinteria of two stores in the whole country going bagless as a pilot program. Shirley ****** Last Wednesday, March 2, Albertsons Director of Environmental Stewardship, Rick Crandall, and Carp Store Manager Ahmed Jahadhmy, met with representatives of our south coast environmental organizations to present their breakthrough pilot project: Going Bagless. As of April 27, the Carpinteria store and one other in Alpine, CA will no longer offer plastic OR paper bags to their customers. If successfully received in the communities, this pilot program could spread throughout Albertsons corporate family (Supervalu) and hopefully to other market chains. Carpinteria Beautiful has offered our support to this project, one aspect of which is to keep you & your organization informed and to encourage your support and participation in helping to make this a (wildly!) successful pilot program. Here are the basics: o March 28 (Monday) 10:00 am at the store: A media event/rally to kick off the ?phase in? part of the Project. Lots of hoopla! o Extensive signage for store & parking lot, newspaper ads & press releases to inform the public o 5000 free reusable bags given away during the month long lead-up to final implementation o A wide variety of bags to be offered for permanent sale, including a very low cost one ($.30) and a spiffy ?Carpinteria? one. o A school contest to have students bring in plastic bags from home to earn a bench (recycled plastic) and other goodies for their schools. o Full implementation to take place April 27th. (Bye bye single use bags!) How can you help? o Come to the kick-off rally. There will be good media coverage (remember, this is one of only two stores in the country chosen to pilot this program!). A great opportunity to demonstrate that critically important community support. o Write a letter (or email) of support from your organization, giving Albertsons permission to use your org?s name in their outreach campaign. Message-ID: Hi Everyone, You may recall that Shauna sent an email out an email two weeks ago requesting not to fill out the distance data until further notice. The issues with the distance data have been resolved with a minor change. Instead of 3 distance categories, we will only have two. They are: A = friendly sighting <100 yards B = >100 yards So instead of recording the actual distance, you will now record either A or B in the distance field. Please start using this method right away, even if the new forms aren?t on your boat just yet (they will be there very soon). The best way to estimate 100 yards is to watch a football game (I know, it?s the wrong time of year) or go down to your nearest high school?s football field to take a look. The updated forms have these codes in the lower right corner so you don?t have to remember them. They refused, and seam to not even give the delivery personal the option of plastic or no plastic. The publishers response to me was obviously anti plastic restriction in regard to the city of Santa Barbara's interest in curbing out contribution to the Pacific Plastic Patch. I decided to turn on my car radio and discovered we were under a tsunami alert. When I got to Ventura Harbor there were 4 helicopters and a lot of people at the beach, but the harbor patrol truck would not let anyone close to the surf. When I checked in at Island Packers everyone was kind of oh yeah big deal nothing is going to happen. Well while we (all seven of us, school group had canceled) were waiting to load on boat we saw a rush of water going out and the crew measure a 46 inch drop on the dock in about 20 minutes. We loaded the boat and started out of the harbor. The small coast guard boats were trying to catch the red marker buoys as they had broken lose. As we were trying to get out of the harbor all the water started rushing back in. it was a sight to be seen. Our first real tsunami. It was a real bronco ride out. Everyone was in awe. Winds were really kicking up and a large swell, everyone on board was very sea worthy. We saw one gray whale for only about 15 minutes and a few common dolphin. When we got back second trip was canceled so I walked down to the headquarters. A few people were on the deck and we watched in amazement as another huge surge came though. Mother nature always amazes me. A very interesting day. Thanks to the crew Captain Jimmy, Danni and Joel. Debbie Shelley -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The harbor was as I have never seen it, like a river, surging in and out, about 3 feet (plus and minus), every 3 minutes or so. The only way we could exit into the Channel was by Captain Mat using all four of the engines. During the day we heard that: ? The bait barge and a buoy had broken loose. (Bait barge was gone when we finally got back into the harbor in the afternoon ... had broken in half ... expect it had sunk.) ? Sail boats had been barred from departing the harbor because they did not have sufficient power to get out. Our 40 or so passengers included a group of international students from UCSB. We had a rocky ride all day and many were very sick. Needless to say, they were all anxious to get back to the dock early. But it was not to be. When we got to the outside of the harbor ... ? The surge was coming every 1-2 minutes and there was not enough time between surges to get back in. This had been going on for quite some time. ? The crane that services the dredge had broken loose from its moorings and was a danger to any traffic in the harbor. ? The Harbor Patrol was even having trouble coming out to give us reports. Thanks, regarding Flex, he had been identified in April 2008 off Vancouver Island (as well as the many years off Russia). There was a separate genetic match of a different individual between S California and Russia but that was not Flex. The genetic analyses supported that the WGW were a different population but I am told were not inconsistent with there being some EGW mixed in there as well. North facing Avalon had nothing. Today I hiked the Catalina Marathon. At the 13.7 mile mark, in Middle Ranch, Peter Sharp and his Bald Eagle restoration corps, set up a great water and aid station with cookies and brownies, along with the usual. But Peter made sure we hikers and runners became aware of the Bald Eagle success story on all of our Channel Islands. He had a telescope set up targeting a distant nesting pair in a tall Eucaliptus tree; the second year in a row they nested there. One was an orange tagged eagle from his Catalina project, the other was a blue tagged eagle from our northern CINP. According to Peter, there are currently 7 nesting pairs on Catalina Island, 2 on Santa Cruz, and possible 1 on both West Anacapa and Santa Rosa Is. The latter two possibilities will be scouted out by Peter in the next couple weeks. All together, Peter says there are at least 25 Bald Eagles on his island, with sightings on San Clemente included. Another 35 to 40 are now in our CINP. He says this total of 65-70 has been stable for the past couple of years. Another sighting of interest to the CINC, was of one Lisa Anderson, of IPCO, running by this slow hiker at the 6 mile mark ( we hikers started 30 min earlier). The intensity and intervals get smaller and smaller, but the gray whales knew to be away from the shore to avoid the surge! And that's why we waited outside the harbor, because they was not enough slack between surges (so powerful across the Pacific Ocean) to tie up the crane easily. Lee). It was very exciting leaving the harbor, with swells of 6-8 feet. We encountered a large, widely dispersed pod of Commons as we were headed towards AI. There were many young Commons along their mothers. We went East and around Arch Rock to view the sea lions. All passengers were happy, but a family of 4 from Arizona/Utah border were esthetic the whole trip. It was around Platform Gina where we encountered the 2 Grays heading West. Passengers were very appreciative to see and photograph their beautiful flukes before we had to get back to the harbor (we were ~ 20 minutes late) The PM trip was move mellow, and less inquisitive of ocean matters. It was after 3 p.m. that we encountered the 2 Grays. They treated us to wonderful flukes even though their primarily concern was to keep moving west. We followed and stay with them about 30 minutes. Cptn. Lee was remarkably accurate in predicting when the whales would resurface after their dives Afterwards, he took us again to East AI, around Arch Rock, to view the sea lions, which were more numerous then in the AM trip. This is our seventh annual survey of the northbound, gray-whale migration through the nearshore of the Santa Barbara Channel, and it is, yet again, different. Journey North's biweekly report prepared by Jane Duden on the migration is available at http://www.learner.org/jnorth/gwhale/. Check out Migration News. And, I hope you will visit our website: www GrayWhalesCount.org. We update THE COUNT daily with Comments. You are able to view Comments from previous days in the Archive. Also, an updated record of THE COUNT is available for download. In the next three weeks, the bulk of the migration will be moving up the California coast, and we will start to see calves. That was one porpoise for each of our 30 students and teachers from the Open Alternative School in Santa Barbara, and the Dall's put on a long bow riding show for them. Our other passengers were mostly from California, and one couple came from Germany. The last sighting of the day included 4 Humpbacks who showed a lot of flukes for PID volunteer Don Shubert as they kept a constant feeding pattern going with shallow dives. Captain Dave took the 38 passengers on the noon trip straight out to the same 4 feeding Humpbacks who kept up their uninterrupted feeding and fluking frenzy. Most of our noon passengers were from out of state, with a lot of foreign tourists as well. The latter came from European countries. Captain Dave spotted 4 northbound Gray whales 2 miles closer in to the mainland, and took us to a great viewing of their opposite, but equally determined, behavior bent on smoothly cruising through increasingly active ahead on swells, rather than feeding. Captain Dave described them as a mating pod. No calves, and one was almost white because it was covered with so many lice and barnacles. Some spray began to reach the top even deck, but crew members Dennis and Amilia kept everyone dry by guiding everyone to to the dry side of the boat. Few got sea sick, and both boat loads of passengers disembarked feeling they had a great whale watching Day. So did, myself, Don, and Valerie Olson, who had ample opportunity to use her very expertly made info and photo cards kept in the Condor whale kit. At 11 a.m. Captain Mike went straight south from Hendry's Beach about three to four miles where a passenger from Carpinteria spotted three spots. We got good looks at 3 northbound Grays who showed us their flukes many times. No sea lions appeared on buoys, platforms , or breakwaters near the harbor since no sun was peaking through for any solar warm up what-so-ever. Two children aboard, ages 4 and 6, were disappointed about this. In or passengers numbering 12, we had Paris, Indonesia, Australia, and Finland represented! On the Captain Mike tried the same plan, going out a little farther, but we found nothing. This time deck hand Josh was much busier serving hot coffee and tea, as the temperature dipped some more, and it started to drizzle near the turn around point. No one complained, and all were happy about the rain check given to all. The sea lions were still in hiding. We did see in the distance straight south, as we approached the harbor, a line of dolphin splashing on the horizon that looked a half mile long. Strangely, no bird action at all. Our passengers numbered 17, including tourist from Estonia, Massachusetts, Las Vegas, Arizona, and Michigan. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Paul Santa Barbara Maritime Museum113 Harbor WaySanta Barbara, CA 93109 Santa Barbara, CA? The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is pleased to unveil its newest permanent exhibit, Shipwreck of the California Gold Rush Steamship Winfield Scott. During the California Gold Rush, ships propelled by steam regularly carried passengers and cargos between San Francisco and Panama. One such vessel was the Pacific Mail Steamship Company?s side-wheel steamer, Winfield Scott. In 1853, the steamer was en-route from San Francisco south bound to Panama with over 500passengers and a cargo of gold and mail when it ran aground on Anacapa Island becoming permanently stranded. ?Several passenger steamships were lost in 1853. Winfield Scott was the final act that plagued the movement of passengers and cargo. Few shipwrecks have been lost while on their way to Panama, and the Winfield Scott furthers our understanding of what people were taking away from California? said Robert Schwemmer, Maritime Heritage Coordinator for Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. This new exhibit will feature intriguing stories of shipwreck survival as told by the marooned passengers, historic artifacts and imagery. Robert Schwemmer will be presenting ?Winfield Scott, Life and Death of California Gold Rush Steamship? May 3 at 7pm, in the Museum?s Munger Theater. Local historian Willard Thompson will be presenting ?Going for the Gold; how Pacific Mail Steamship Company brought miners to California? May 17 at 7pm, in the Museum?s Munger Theater. Some are because I am "training" new CINCers, and some because I see too many trips that are not covered by Naturalists. This being said, I want you to know that I am open to giving up a trip if you are unable to schedule one at another time. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you want to take the spot or trade another. The important thing is to get out there and share your knowledge and enthusiasm for this special bit of paradise. Message-ID: Kathy, I disagree strongly. The calendars don't work well for manyof us. The problem is not seeing the whole calendar at once. We need to be able to see every alternative slot without "clicking" each one (that's clicking 30 times on each calendar---and by the time you see all, decide, and go back, it's all changed. And this happens many times a month, for those of us who go out often to fill in open spots). However, the "administrators" do thave that ability to see the whole calendar at once. *Could Shauna/Dave arrange to give all of us admin prerogatives on volunteerspot to see all slots on each day of every day of the month?* That would solve the problem. (I have reported the problem to volunteerspot, by the way, to see if they can incorporate such a feature in their next update. They were interested, and are working on it.) For instance, I frequently I can go out every day, but need to schedule things on certain (but flexible) non-volunteer days -- or can go out just afternoons - so I have to see all the alternatives. I can adjust my schedule to CINC, but only if I can see all the alternatives. Also, volunteer time counts. Great to save Clare time. Not great to cost 120 people a lot more time. If we are employee equivalents,... etc etc. the argument can go on. In short, it needs improvement and I think it will happen! We use the pdf report, which is the same one that we are sending to you weekly, combined with clicking on individual dates for any updates. This pdf report has all the information that used to be on the old calendar (including the time and harbor that all boats depart from) that Clare maintained on the park website. We can not give everyone in the group administrator access. The old calendar was not updated immediately every time a change occured. Clare updated it about once a week, which is as often as you get the pdf reports. In addition, because volunteer spot updates your sign ups immediately, you actually have more updated information on the new system, even if it means clicking on individual dates to see the changes that have occured since the last pdf report was sent out, which we also have to do. With the old system you would not see updates until Clare's weekly changes were entered. Regarding having to compete at 7am on day one of sign ups and not being able to get spots, the old system of e-mailing Clare (after the initial one event sign up at the meetings) was set up so that Clare assigned trips based on the time stamp of the requesters e-mail. This is exactly what happens with volunteer spot. The difference is that volunteer spot lets you know immediately if you have an assignment, while the old method required you to wait for Clare to review the e-mails, make the assignments and then notify the person of the assignment, and then update the website calendar. This month as an example, there were still open spots for all activities on weekdays and weekends for days after the open sign ups began. I acknowledge that this is a different system, but remind you that it basically does the same thing. We do not have the resources to administer the sign ups as we did in the past, and this new system does work. I have offered repeatedly to help out anyone who needs it to learn how to use volunteer spot. Only a few people have taken me up on that offer and they seem to be using it just fine now. My offer of assistance still stands for anyone who would like it. We have also offered to do sign ups manually for anyone not able to use volunteer spot. A couple people have asked me to do that on occasion and I have done so promptly. That is still an option, and is no different than the old system of notifying Clare, having her make the assignment and posting it. Change is not always easy, but is sometimes necessary and it happens regularly. I have worked hard to minimize the impacts and make the sign up process as easy as possible within our means. While some members have expressed dislike for the system, many others have expressed their happiness with it. I am reading in some messages that there is a silent undercurrent of dissent about it, but if that is the case it is necessary for those people to express their concerns directly to me. If this is done I can work with those individuals to help them find a way to work within the current sign up system. I value all of your efforts, your time and your committment. I am doing what I can to keep your experiences positive, but we all need to recognize that this was a necessary change and that we all have to try and adapt to present circumstances. Two sightings of gray whales, a group of three and a group of two; no calves. The whales were approached and followed along the 60 ft contour; then we separated with a search looping past the north side of AI and returned to port. A bumpy ride at times heading against the swell. A cool, crisp and clear day on the channel with views of the snow covered Topa Topas ending with lots of happy and excited kids after their annual high seas adventure. 1:30 pm : 51 passengers. A single sighting of two gray whales; no calves; within 15 minutes after leaving the harbor. We continued the search looping along the North Side of AI, past Arch Rock to the south side and returning past the south shore of EAI to see several hundred ca sea lions hauled out. The dramatic views of the cliffs with passing lines of Pelicans, sea birds and the light house coupled with the sounds of sea lions, birds and surf are memorable experience. Mat headed into a clear area up the coast, past UCSB, and the Condor trailed 2 grays who swam slow and fluked several times. Earlier, about 200 Commons really pleased all the kids on board, maybe even more than the whales! Then, on the 1200 trip Capt. Mat headed on a different course, covering lots of ocean and dodging the fog. And then, 2 Humps appeared, moving slowly, thinking about approaching the boat (one close pass...) and taking about 4-5 minute dives with good fluke exits from the surface. Good to moderate sea conditions with fog moving about. England and Switzerland on board for both trips as well as some East Coasters, locals and SoCal folks too. This month's Nat Geo Mag has a great article on ocean acidification. The Acid Sea, by Elizabeth Kolbert, begins by covering current research of undersea vents spewing bubbles of CO2 into the ocean around little islands off the coast of Italy near Mount Vesuvius. The natural acidification here is used as a window through which the readers can look at what is happening worldwide in our oceans due to escalating man produced CO2 emissions finding their way into the sea. Covered is the reality that 55 million years ago temperatures around the world soared, and marine then changed dramatically as well. However, the research she presents concludes that today's rate of emissions seems roughly ten times as fast , and consequently, there is not enough time for water layers in our oceans to mix, thus accentuating the problem. It was a beautiful day with great visibility and mostly calm seas with some swell. Just outside the harbor entrance we ran into about 100 common dolphins who entertained the passengers with leaps and bow riding. Capt. Matt took us south to look for humpbacks seen that way the day before. Just past the oil platforms we came upon splashes and fins. It was a mating pod of 3 grey whales who entertained us for 45 minutes with their rolling and fluke displays. There was even some x-rated behavior that I will not describe in detail here. We did see one more spout at a distance that we could not find again. Overall, an excellent trip that everyone enjoyed. The noon trip had 65 passengers from all over the states and abroad. We headed up the coast off shore trying to locate the mating pod but were unsuccessful. There was a small pod of common dolphins feeding with sea lions and birds off UCSB. Capt. Matt turned and headed east further off shore to look for humpbacks. By 2PM he was about to turn for home when he spotted 2 spouts. They turned out to be 2 humpbacks who put on a great show with one breach followed multiple tail thrusts and tail slaps. We stayed with them so long we were almost an hour late getting home but no one complained. Rae Emmett and Larry Harris were the naturalists and I was the photo-ID. To avoid having to lug around this large binder to record your sightings, we have now provided a small white binder that contains blank sighting logs only. Please use this small binder to keep a few blank sighting logs in while you roam around the boat, or for PhotoID'ers, in the wheelhouse or on the flybridge. This will keep the other resource materials in the large binder in the whale kit for other volunteer naturalists onboard to use and alleviate your having to lug the large binder around with you. If you have a different technique you use to managing sighting logs while on the boat (like a clipboard with a rubber band around the bottom to keep the papers from flying around), that's fine. You may continue using that. Here's a quick summary of the process: If you are the volunteer who will be recording the sightings, get the small binder out of the whale kit. If there are any completed sighting logs in it (there shouldn't be), put them in the large binder in chronological order with the other completed logs. Make sure you have 3-6 blank sighting logs and 1-2 of the special otter sighting logs in the small binder and use it during your day on the boat. There are plenty of extra blank sheets in the large binder. And again, if you have your own technique for managing your sighting logs for the day, you may use that. At the end of the day, remove all the completed sighting logs from the small binder and put them in the large binder in chronological order with the other completed logs. Replace both binders back in the whale kit. If you are the last naturalist on Friday, remember to collect all the completed sighting logs for the week and put them in the Sightings Envelope located in the Santa Barbara CINMS office rack card holder. For reference, the large binder is labeled "Resources and Extra Data Sheets" and the small binder is labeled "Sighting Reports". This is already implemented on the Condor Express and will be shortly on the Island Packers boats. Hopefully this makes your lives a little easier. Let me know if you have any questions.
