Dear Fellow Naturalists,
Please let me know if you would like a pre-print of the paper on last May's Med Gray. John Calambokidis quickly responded (below) to my clarification request on WNP vs ENP, both DNA and ID. More fascinating interpretive grist along with your amazing tsunami reports yesterday.
All the best,
Marty
Thanks, regarding Flex, he had been identified in April 2008 off Vancouver Island (as well as the many years off Russia). There was a separate genetic match of a different individual between S California and Russia but that was not Flex. The genetic analyses supported that the WGW were a different population but I am told were not inconsistent with there being some EGW mixed in there as well. By the way, you can find information on Flex and the photo-ID match at the IUCN web site (see one of the New News items on cascadiaresearch.org )

Subject: WNP vs ENP Question
John,
Thanks for the wonderful presentations last night.
Did I hear you say say Flex or another WNP member was photographed in 2008 wintering in California, it's a safe bet some of the WNP population are in fact likely regular visitors from ENP with ENP mitochondrial DNA, and some claim there may be no distinct WNP population despite apparently at least one good paper showing DNA differences between populations? Thanks for clarifying.
