Greetings All,
Mon March 28, 2011 WW aboard the Vanguard. Fine boat handling and
narration provided by Capt Jason and Crew Luke and Paige.
9:30 am: 80 passengers made up of 50 Second Graders on a field trip
with their parents and 4 teachers from Santa Clarita.
Two sightings of gray whales, a group of three and a
group of two; no calves. The whales were approached and followed
along the 60 ft contour; then we separated with a
search looping past the north side of AI and returned to port. A
bumpy ride at times heading against the
swell. A cool, crisp and clear day on the channel with views of the
snow covered Topa Topas ending with lots of happy and
excited kids after their annual high seas adventure.
1:30 pm : 51 passengers. A single sighting of two gray whales; no
calves; within 15 minutes after leaving the harbor. We continued the
search looping along the North Side of AI, past
Arch Rock to the south side and returning past the south shore of EAI to
see several hundred ca sea lions hauled out. The
dramatic views of the cliffs with passing lines of Pelicans, sea birds
and the light house coupled with the sounds of sea
lions, birds and surf are memorable experience. Mike Sos CINC
