There were birds seen as usual, including a glimpse of a P. loon and Brant flock flying by in the afternoon. Kudos to stellar Capt. Chris, and crew member Olivia. Published online 4 May 2011 | Nature473, 16 (2011) | (excerpted and reference to paper) https://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=wayward-whale-in-mediterranean ? Warming Arctic cited as likely cause of freak migration. by Nadia Drake ... ? "The sighting of a lone grey whale (Eschrichtius robustus) last [May] off the beaches of Israel, and then again near Spain, came as a surprise to many... might indicate a wider trend: the mixing of northern Atlantic and Pacific marine ecosystems, made possible by the climate-driven depletion of Arctic sea ice. ? Marine biologist Aviad Scheinin, from the Israel Marine Mammal Research and Assistance Center in Haifa, and his colleagues considered the errant whale's most likely origin and route. In a paper published online on 19 April in Marine Biodiversity Records (A. P. Scheinin et al. Mar. Biodiv. Rec. 4, e28; 2011), they rule out a source in the presumed-extinct North Atlantic population. Comparing photos of the whale's fluke with those of individuals in the small, critically endangered western (North) Pacific population, they found no matches, implying that the whale is a member of the roughly 20,000-strong eastern North Pacific population.... ? -ice coverage in the Arctic was sparse enough to make such a passage plausible, says Harry Stern, a mathematician at the University of Washington in Seattle, who studies sea ice. "The opening of the passages that we've seen in the last four or five years is unprecedented," he adds. ? John Calambokidis,..., says the authors have done a good job in considering factors such as grey whale populations, feeding habits and swimming speeds. "A grey whale in the Mediterranean does not make sense," he says. "But among the explanations for the bizarre occurrence, this is definitely the most plausible." The lack of a tissue sample means that the whale can't be traced to its original population using genetic markers. With no further data, it is premature to conclude that the sighting is related to climate change, says ecologist Kristin Laidre of the University of Washington in Seattle. But climate is sure to affect future whale sightings, she says. "There's no doubt that ice loss will allow the Arctic to act as a corridor for marine species exchange between areas that were previously geographically isolated," she says. "Whales will migrate to the Arctic earlier, move farther north and stay longer. Those are things we predict, and expect to see." ? Grey whales aren't the only creatures whose ranges might expand as summer sea ice contracts. "You could make an argument for any species with an open-ocean phase in its life history," says evolutionary biologist David Tallmon, from the University of Alaska Southeast, in Juneau. Potential travellers range from the smallest diatoms to the largest whales ? and include terrestrial species seeking colder temperatures nearer the poles (see Nature 468, 891; 2010). "Whole thermal regimes changing could lead to all sorts of weird ecological effects," Tallmon says. ? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The site is reserved all day, BBQ pit will be active in the late afternoon, and the gazebo and picnic tables are all ours. A public bathroom is on site. It is suggested you bring your own beach chairs to enjoy the view from surrounding bluff level terrain. Details to follow from Dick soon. We will only need a rough count of those planning to attend, and a small donation at the site to cover reservation fee, ice, and some goodies for the hard working crews who will join us after the returning 4:30 boats clean up. Before leaving the harbor a handful of bottlenose were feeding near the harbor entrance and more just out side. Then we came upon a small group of common dolphin, as we neared the island we were treated with close up looks of three full grown adults, with lots of surface time and fluking with almost every sound. We could see spouts in the distance and the major splashing caused by at least one of the more distance whales pec slapping. The afternoon boat was then treated with 6 humpbacks and lots of breaching. We could see the breaching from Cavern Point and the pier! We also observed common dolphin moving from Cavern Point toward Scorpion. When I reach the pier at about 12:30, the commons were heading toward Anacapa. Lots of fox sightings, busy day on the island with two hikes, school group pulling seems like tons of non-native grass with the aid of Channel Islands Restoration. Three boats arriving tomorrow. Probably More Than You Want to Know About Rockfish Dr. Milton Love, a popular and entertaining speaker as well as a leading researcher, will provide intriguing information on rockfish natural history and habitats in the Santa Barbara Channel during the May ?From Shore to Sea? lecture. For the past 15 years Love has operated a research submersible to carry out comparative fish surveys of populations including rockfish that live around both natural and artificial reefs throughout the southern California Bight. Love?s research is designed to better understand the current and historic patterns of distribution of rockfish and how they adapt to different open ocean environments including how rockfish settle at oil platforms. Love, a research biologist for 38 years, currently with University of California Santa Barbara?s Marine Science Institute, has authored or co-authored more than 80 publications on the fishes of the Pacific Coast. He has conducted research on numerous economically important marine fishes in the northeast Pacific, including over 30 years of work on rockfishes. His most recent book is The Rockfishes of the Northeast Pacific. The ?From Shore to Sea? lecture series is sponsored by Channel Islands National Park with support from Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. The purpose of the series is to further the understanding of current research on the Channel Islands and surrounding waters. The lectures occur at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of March, April, May, September, October, and November at the Channel Islands National Park Robert J. Lagomarsino Visitor Center, 1901 Spinnaker Drive in the Ventura Harbor. Cats are noted for the transmission of the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. In humans, this protozoan can induce miscarriages and can be fatal to those who are immunesuppressed. Among marine mammals, it has been found in sea otters, manatees, multiple species of delphinids (including Tursiops, Stenella, and Orcinus), and belugas. In sea otters off the Big Sur coast, it is responsible for a significant number of deaths from meningo-encephalitis (infection of the brain and its coverings), likely from cat and wild feline feces that wash out to sea; in other marine mammals, it exists anywhere on the spectrum from incidental finding at necropsy to cause of death. Marine mammals are susceptible to a number of human diseases; their immune systems face dramatically different (and often less intense) challenges than do those of humans and other terrestrial animals. Years ago, at Marineland of the Pacific, each human flu season saw the deaths of at least several dolphins from similar respiratory conditions.... Message-ID: Vic Cox and Others, Vic, your phone message with return # was deleted by mistake. But this answer is for everyone! Of course spouses and dates are welcome. Singles come too! So far we have had an unofficial count of about 40 planning to attend. Encourage others! The site is on a bluff with a great view, but with access to the long sandy beach meandering toward Carpinteria. It is a picnic type event. Everyone bring your own food and drink ( SB County allows adult beverages there if you bring your own ). Last year a few came early and had a wine social at a comfortable overlook, and others who came early went for a long walk on the beach. It is a great swimming beach as well. Kate Faulkner biked up from Ventura to join us, and arranged to have the bike transported back. Dick and I will have the BBQ pit going, and a couple big ice chests with ice to keep beverages cool for you. Dick likes to put paper table cloths on the ample picnic tables, so we could use help there. We will have the table cloths and tape. The $5 donation covers these things plus the reservation fee for the site , which is ours all day. We need help in cleaning up at sunset. The potluck aspect means basically to bring your own food, but expand one dish enough to feed one more person. We don't want the boat crews from Ventura and Santa Barbara to have to scrounge something up. They are working hard until 5 p.m. to clean up the boats, and we want them to join us! Plan to take all your own leftovers home. This approach Dick and I think solves the personal preferences for food each person may have. Bring your own plates and utensils. There is a sink and running water. You will be able to cook your own whatever over the huge BBQ pit we will have ready. See you at Rincon Beach Park June 8th, 5 p.m. or earlier! Lee and I were in Baja California Sur this February for the viewing of cow calf pairs in Bahia Magdalena, the naturalist who is a Professor of marine biology, showed us samples of barnacles that are endemic to the gray and humpback species. Below is the right up of that appears on the back side of the photo, the piece is laminated. This should start appearing in whale kits later this week or by next week. Please show them, but do not just let them lie around. Please let me know if you have any specific questions about these items. Due to the technical aspects of the RAIN list, I cannot attach a photo. So, next time you are on board the IPCo boats or the Condor Express, please check out our latest educational prop. Copy on back of photo: Humpback Barnacle (right) The barnacle Coronula diadema lives only on humpback whale skin. Barnacles regularly colonize the skin of filter-feeding whales, and they often do so in huge numbers ? one humpback whale, for instance, can host almost 1,000 pounds of barnacles. (On an 80,000-lbs. whale it?s about as much extra weight as summer clothing on a human.) Gray Whale Barnacle (left) One type of barnacle, Cryptolepas rhachianecti, attaches only to gray whales. Once this barnacle has settled on "its own" gray, the barnacle spends its whole life hanging onto that whale. Snug inside their hard limestone shells, the barnacles stick out feather feet to comb the sea and capture plankton and other food for themselves as the whales swim along. As the young whales grow the barnacle clusters grow too. Gradually the barnacles form large, solid white colonies. The colonies appear as whitish patches, especially on the whale's head, flippers, back and tail flukes. Whale biologists look at the pattern of barnacle clusters in order to tell individual grays apart. This is possible because no two barnacle clusters, like no two human's fingerprints, are alike! I went with Sally and John on the Condor Express for my evaluation and it was amazing. Captain Matt called ?Thar She Blows? and told us that unless his eyes were playing tricks, there were lots of whales ahead. We had passengers from Hungary, China, Niagara Falls, Texas, Pennsylvania, one couple from Malibu taking their grandson who they took as a child and now is on a football scholarship to UNLV. Lots of smiles!!! They were treated to an incredible day, ready for this: 6-10 Pacific White-sided Dolphin, 10-12 Long-beaked Common Dolphin, 18 Blue Whales, 18 Humpback Whales, 7-10 California Sea Lions, 15-20 Harbor Seals. We observed 3 Blue Whales exhibiting ?racing? behavior. One Blue Whale rolling on his side and another one bringing his head out of the water within 100 yards of the boat, Several Blue Whale flukes and numerous Humpback flukes. Captain Matt took us up close to Santa Cruz Island where we observed the Harbor Seals ?hauled out? on two beaches. It doesn't? get any better than this!!! Apparently, this migration ?has been well-documented, and flight over land takes advantage of thermals. Postbreeding migration out of Gulf of California begins in Jun?Jul, earlier if nesting unsuccessful (Anderson and Anderson 1976). Most migrants cross Baja peninsula at its narrowest parts, most commonly at Bah?a de los Angeles (D. Anderson pers. comm.), then move northward along Pacific coast as far as s. British Columbia. Birds from colonies in S. California Bight also migrate northward at end of their breeding season in Jul?Aug (Anderson and Anderson 1976). Numbers from s. California to s. British Columbia peak in Sep?Oct, then decline as in-dividuals return south to breeding areas by Dec?Jan (Briggs et al. 1981, 1983; Jaques 1994; Shepard 1999a, 1999b). Small proportion of Gulf of California population (mostly immatures) migrates inland to Sal-ton Sea, remains there through summer and autumn, then presumably returns to Gulf by Dec?Jan (Anderson et al. 1977a, Sturm 1998). But experts peeling back the role of sound in the marine world are making surprising observations.? Alongside a boom in international shipping and deep-sea oil development, the ocean is growing ever-noisier and scientists are increasingly wary of sound's potential to impact sea life beyond just marine mammals. Herring and cod appear to alter their swimming patterns in response to noise from ships. Schools of bluefin tuna scatter, with some diving and others rising to the surface. New studies suggest even small bumps in ocean noise may affect everything from damselfish and pollock to octopus and squid. May 21, 2011 Message-ID: <006201cc1847$fd2bea00$f783be00$@net> Today?s trip was an 8 hour ACS trip billed as a Humpback Adventure ? and that is was! Today?s naturalists were Alisa Shulman-Janiger (the Orca expert) who did a lot of the narration and Wes Fritz (the bird expert) who pointed out the birds. No working CINCers on board today. It was more of a whale day than a bird day but saw good birds were seen. We left harbor at 8am and immediately saw about 8-10 bottlenose dolphins About a ? hour out the whale adventure started with a pair of Humpbacks that we stayed with a while. A breach was seen in the distance and we headed that way to find 2 more Humpbacks that we enjoyed with other spouts in the area. One of these jumped completely out of the water less than 50 feet from the bow. Then we saw larger spouts and headed over to the Blue Whales where we saw 1, then 3 and at least 2 more in distance (6 total Blues). We watched these big boys for a while and everyone got great looks and photos. The weather was spectacular - sunny, no wind, no spitty sea spray, no waves over the boat, calm seas all day ? one of the best days in a long time (for me at least). While looking for more whale action we came upon a large Mola Mola that we watched for a bit before moving on. Then we headed over the SCI and cruised along the shore and saw a zillion sea lions on every rock ? they were everywhere including many in the water thermoregulating the mid 50?s degree water. I think it was the most sea lions I have seen on this side if the island in a long time. I guess they wanted to go rock climbing today instead of hauling out on nearby beaches. After looking into the cave we cruised east along the island some more and slowly turned toward home. About 2+ miles out we saw a huge breach and raced over to check out the action! The best was yet to come. When we got there we saw lots of action with tail slapping, tail throws, water flying everywhere. We watched this show for quite a while and then the grand finale was less than 50 yards away with huge breach from an adult, then a juvenile, then an adult again. It was like the adults were teaching the young one how to show off to the tour boats! Then after 15+ minutes of nothing we left toward home. It was like the last curtain call. The performance was over and they swam away not to be seen again. Some of bird species seen in addition to the usual gulls, pelicans and cormorants were: Sooty Shearwater Ancient Murrelet Common Murre Pink- footed Shearwater Red- necked Phalarope Pigeon Guillemot Rhinoceros Auklet Cassin?s Auklet a lost Wilson?s Warbler looking for a place to land but never landed on the boat Amazing Day with Awesome weather and Incredible Wildlife! Naturalists aboard included Valerie Olson, Bill Wakelee and Sally Eagle on PID. Wind was an initial concern but the ocean cooperated. Our first encounter about five miles south was a Humpback traveling solo, feeding deep enough to display full flukes numerous times, and giving us a wonderful view of the ventral side which was very dark with little pigmentation. We stayed to watch for approximately 45 minutes before Captain Dave took us out to the eastern end off Santa Cruz Island. Numerous Shearwaters indicated a pair of Humpbacks surface feeding. Early on, one Humpback displayed her flukes virtually in slow motion and we were able to identify her "hemispheric lobe". Both Sally and Valerie called simultaneously "FEMALE!" All aboard were happy to know we definitely had a female Humpback for a companion! We were also treated to lunge feeding techniques and some beautiful synchronized swimming. At one point the Humpbacks rolled onto their side to feed and we were able to see half of the tail gliding through the water like a tall fin. Plenty of vocalization took place between the pair. These two were then joined by a third Humpback who continued to surface feed with them. A few pec slaps were thrown in, to the delight of all on board. The water was unusually clear and we were able to witness the beautiful but eerie greenish glow of white on both the pec fins and tail under the water. This made it easy to track their movements. A very friendly sea lion followed the slowed boat to jump through the stern waves, with many passengers taking pictures of his playful behavior. With the wind intensifying and already one very ill passenger, the remaining few miles to Santa Cruz were forfeited and the return trip home was pleasant with very happy passengers. Also noted was the presence of three large ships using the mainland side of the channel as their shipping lane. Upon our return to the harbor, we were greeted by one very fat seal taking a snooze on the bait barge. Passengers on board hailed from Liverpool and London, England; Vienna, Austria; Capetown, South Africa; Phoenix, AZ, Roswell, New Mexico; North Carolina. I had a wonderful time and want to thank Sally, Valerie and Bill for being so supportive on my evaluation trip today. I can't wait for my next trip out! We scrubbed the Cavern Point hike for a walk into Scorpion Canyon. I accompanied the MERITO class of 25 forth/fifth graders. We saw 2 foxes on the island and 3 or 4 common dolphins briefly sighted just before landing on the island. We were skiffed in to the beach due to low tide. Not your average trip to Scorpion. One family of 3 had gone to Ventura Harbor, found out they were on the AI trip from Oxnard, went to ESCI anyway and then wanted to go back on the big boat to Ventura. I reminded them that their car would be in Oxnard so they returned on the Vanguard. One lady and several of the kids got sick. Brandt?s Comorant http://www.birdinginformation.com/birds/comorants/brandts-comorant/ Double-Crested Cormorant http://www.birdinginformation.com/birds/comorants/double-crested-cormorant/ Pelagic Cormorant http://www.birdinginformation.com/birds/comorants/pelagic-cormorant/ There are 37 different cormorant species worldwide. (We have 3 species we see locally, Brants, Double Crested and Pelagic ) and they vary in how long and deep they can dive. (Brants, 150 ft., Double Crested 40 ft and Pelagic 180 ft.) They have oil interwoven in their feathers that make them less buoyant than other birds and they swallow stones, which are lodged in their gut and act like a scuba diver's weight belt. Cormorants are waterbirds, whose name means "crows of the sea." A member of the pelican family, they can fly at speeds of 50 mph and are particularly adept at swimming underwater, which is why they are such skilled fish catchers. They feed mostly on fish but also feed on crustaceans, frogs, tadpoles and insect larvae. They live mainly in tropical and temperate areas but have been found in polar waters. Some are solely saltwater birds. Some are solely freshwater birds. Some are both. Some nest in trees. Others nest on rock islands or cliff edges. In the wild they form some of the densest colonies of birds known. (There is a large nesting colony in the cliff face at the Landing Cove at Anacapa Island) The eggs are a chalky-blue color. There is usually one brood a year. The young are fed through regurgitation. Cormorants form same sex partnerships when they can not find opposite sex partners. Their guano is collected and used as fertilizer. Unlike most water birds, which have water resistant feathers, cormorants have feathers that are designed to get throughly wet Their feathers don't trap air like water resistant varieties. This make it easier for them to dive and stay submerged while they chase fish. But this also means that their feathers become waterlogged. After spending time in the water cormorants spend considerable time on shore drying out. When they are out of the water they stretch out their wings to dry their feathers. Cormorant pursue fish underwater with their eyes open, their wings pressed against their bodies, kicking furiously with their legs and feet at the back end of their bodies. It swims underwater with its wings folded along its body, and thrusting its webbed feet which provides enough propulsion for a cormorant to tailgate a fish and catch it crosswise on its hooked bill. The cormorant generally brings a fish to surface after 10 to 20 seconds and flips it in the air to position it correctly and smooth down its spines.? Cormorants swallow fish whole and head first. They usually take a little time to shift the fish around to get it to go down their throat the right way. Bones and other indigestible parts are regurgitated in a nasty goo. In the Brazilian Amazon, cormorants have been observed working as a team, splashing the water with their wings and driving fish into shallow water near the shore where they are easily collected. I hope this helps and welcome to the Naturalist Corps! Staci Kaye-Carr On May 27, 2011, at 2:33 PM, George Moore wrote: > Question: How deep can Cormorants dive? We've added several videos of plants on ESCI to the You Tube channel "ondeerpath." You can check out plants you want to see before you leave for the islands and look up ones you've seen when you get back. There are now 30 short videos in which Ken Owen shows and talks about the most popular plants located from the hillside by the pier up to the two restoration sites next to the lower campground. You can access the videos at www.youtube.com/ondeerpath. If you are at home on your computer, you definitely want to use the You Tube site instead of the video files on Joel's Skydrive CINC site. On You Tube you can see a page of thumbnails of all the videos to help find the ones you want. The quality of the videos is much, much better. I've also created playlists in which you can look for plants based on their location. We'll also be uploading the videos to Joel's Skydrive site. These low-resolution videos are in small files that are great for downloading to your mobile device so you can view them when looking at the plants on the island. I'll let you know as soon as they're available. Feedback on problems with the videos or your suggestions are always welcome. Who did the video and programming to You Tube? Another recent positive media coverage of one of our islands of the CINP was an article in the Santa Barbara News-Press Saturday the 28th; "Trail Quest: Anacapa Island" by James Wapotich. James does not mention who gave him a guided tour, but it is obvious that person was trained well in our scripted hike! James takes care in stressing to hikers to stay to the trails as the "Western" Gulls and their soon to be wandering hatchlings "were there first." Pinniped Point, Cathedral Point, and Inspiration Point are all highlighted, as are the sea lions, the Giant Coreopsis, and the historic lighthouse and complex. Sadly, missing is any mention of the vast kelp forests and the Marine Protected Areas which should guide a visitor's focus to the unseen underwater ecosystem which worldwide actually dwarfs the terrestrial ones. IPCO and the CI National Park get great coverage via reservation info. Keep on Truckin (and Swimmin), Paul.
