20 bottlenose
70 common dolphin
3 humpbacks
3 more in the distance with one pec slapping
Had a lovely crossing this morning from Ventura on the Islander to Scorpion on Santa Cruz. Before leaving the harbor a handful of bottlenose were feeding near the harbor entrance and more just out side.
Then we came upon a small group of common dolphin, as we neared the island we were treated with close up looks of three full grown adults, with lots of surface time and fluking with almost every sound. We could see spouts in the distance and the major splashing caused by at least one of the more distance whales pec slapping.
The afternoon boat was then treated with 6 humpbacks and lots of breaching. We could see the breaching from Cavern Point and the pier! We also observed common dolphin moving from Cavern Point toward Scorpion. When I reach the pier at about 12:30, the commons were heading toward Anacapa.
Lots of fox sightings, busy day on the island with two hikes, school group pulling seems like tons of non-native grass with the aid of Channel Islands Restoration. Three boats arriving tomorrow. What a splendid place to be.
Sincerely,
Catherine French
