[CINC] Dolphins and Cat

The dolphin/cat interaction is definitely not "cute." Cats are noted for the transmission of the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. In humans, this protozoan can induce miscarriages and can be fatal to those who are immunesuppressed. Among marine mammals, it has been found in sea otters, manatees, multiple species of delphinids (including Tursiops, Stenella, and Orcinus), and belugas. In sea otters off the Big Sur coast, it is responsible for a significant number of deaths from meningo-encephalitis (infection of the brain and its coverings), likely from cat and wild feline feces that wash out to sea; in other marine mammals, it exists anywhere on the spectrum from incidental finding at necropsy to cause of death. Marine mammals are susceptible to a number of human diseases; their immune systems face dramatically different (and often less intense) challenges than do those of humans and other terrestrial animals. Years ago, at Marineland of the Pacific, each human flu season saw the deaths of at least several dolphins from similar respiratory conditions....

Regards to all,

Chuck Rennie
