Award-winning filmmaker, Mike deGruy, will discuss the documentary he is working on about the Gulf oil spill and show related footage. He will explore the potential for an oil spill in the Channel and the damage one could do to our local area. Mike has traveled the world shooting films for a variety of clients, primarily the BBC, PBS and National Geographic. Mike's company, the Film Crew, Inc., produces and hosts natural history films and he is the recipient of many awards including an EMMY and BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts).

Steve Gaines will discuss local marine protected areas and sustainable fishing practices. Steve is the Dean of the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UC Santa Barbara. Steve's research focuses on marine ecology and conservation, sustainable fisheries, the design of marine reserves, and the impact of climate change on ocean ecosystems. He has also served as Director of the UCSB Marine Science Institute, and both Acting Dean of Science and Acting Vice Chancellor for Research at UCSB.
