Derek Lohuis Channel Islands National Park 1901 Spinnaker Dr. Ventura, CA 93001 805-658-5736 Dear Naturalist Corps members, Resource management?s seabird division at Channel Islands National Park is extending an invitation to volunteers in the Naturalist Corps to help view nesting footage of Xantus?s Murrelets. Since 2007, Montrose Restoration Settlements Program and Channel Islands National Park have been making efforts to restore denuded nesting habitat for Xantus?s Murrelets and other seabirds on Santa Barbara Island. This project is part of a larger plan developed to mitigate damages resulting from the disposal of DDT into the southern California bight by the Montrose Chemical Corporation. It?s our belief that conservation efforts can be implemented more effectively when there is a sound understanding of the species? ecology. Although there have been extensive efforts to examine Xantus?s Murrelet breeding biology, there are still aspects that remain largely unknown. For this reason, we have been filming these rare and state threatened seabirds over the past two nesting seasons. Our division doesn?t have the time to do view all of the countless hours of footage, but we hope that with the help of interested people who have a background in natural science and a keen eye, we can begin to work through it. Here?s a brief description of what a viewing session would entail. One would come into the seabird office in the Ventura Harbor. All files are digitized, so analyses would occur on a computer. We have a list of basic behaviors that are coded; such as, bird enters nest, bird seen incubating, bird seen turning eggs, etc. While watching the footage, in an excel spreadsheet you would record the behavior, the time it occurred, and any other pertinent notes. When you are done viewing a file you can check it off the list. Footage can be fast forwarded through, but watched closely, during periods of inactivity. We hope to recruit volunteers that have the following skills: keen observational skills, meticulous data entry, experience with computers and the Microsoft Office program Excel, and a basic understanding of avian ecology. We are grateful to anyone that?s interested and hope that it is something one can enjoy doing whenever they have some free time. If you would like to be involved please email me at kevin_barnes at nps.gov. Hope to hear from you!! Due to safety concerns, we are no longer able to obtain a walking tour ON a platform, however, we are able to take a guided tour around Platfrom Gail and Grace on a Veneco boat. Due to the* limited number of passengers (30),* and the fact that they *want to "try" one trip out first *-- *we will need we need to limit this first trip to CINC volunteers ..... * It should be a lot of fun -- you get swing rope training since that is how you will get from Carpinteria pier to the crew boat! Requirements include general health of participant, must be physically able to support their weight during swing rope transfer, no open-toed shoes or high heels and no one under the age of 18. Further, participants must be willing to sign the liability waiver. The trip will depart at 0800 and return at 1130. Based on Veneco's schedule we have selected *WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2011*. If you are not able to go on the tour we will make an effort to capture the key messages and ensure all CINC volunteers receive that information. We will also see how it goes and try to add another tour in the near future. *Please do not REPLY ALL, reply directly to Diane Rennell *< diane.rennell at gmail.com>, who is coordinating our RSVPs for the tour! *Please RSVP by October 28, 2011.* Thank you. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... "I Sari Wa!" Paul Carpinteria Bans the Bag! A big congratulations and thank you to Carpinteria for becoming the first city on the South Coast to ban single-use shopping bags! At its October 10th meeting, the Carpinteria City Council voted unanimously to draft an ordinance that will ban disposable shopping bags - both plastic and paper - at all Carpinteria businesses. Once the ordinance is adopted, likely next spring, large retailers will have three months to comply and small retailers will have six months. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... On the west coast of Sicily their is a smaller island off shore called Favignana, that has a history related to fishing Bluefin tuna with fixed land based traps called tonnaras. This method goes back to the ancient Phoenicians ( who settled Sicily, and what is now Libya ) and the Romans ( who conquered them ). The tuna migrated passed this Favignana since prehistoric times on their way to Mediterranean spawning waters from the Atlantic Ocean, diverting in two directions. Some went to the spawning grounds off of Libya, and others went into the spawning grounds northward through the Tyrrhenian Sea. 2009 was the first year on record in which the "tonnara" method of fishing tuna was not used since these ancient times, even for tourist dollars, which had been the case in recent years." By 2008 no tuna migrated by Favignana to be herded into the tonnaras where fishermen could walk into the traps to throw the tuna onto the land. > Using this ancient method of fishing, only the tuna closest to shore would be caught, the rest reached their spawning grounds. However, by the middle of the last decade all tuna catches were put in floating cages to be fattened and sent to Japan. This method was called ranching, not farming, as it focuses on catching the species before it can reproduce, and not encouraging reproduction at all. This "Ranching" method' was a of humungous concern to environmentalist and sustainable fishing advocates alike throughout the Mediterranean by 2008. The following quote is from a an Italian article in the journal La Sicilia Ritrovata (Sicily Rediscovered) Numero 1-2008. > > > > "The way tuna is eaten has changed according to the fashions, now sushi and tagliata (thinly sliced raw tuna) are in, the Japanese boats fish indiscriminately and without control, and buy almost all the catches in the Mediterranean at really high prices. Mediterranean, from April to July, is invaded by "super" fishing boats from Eastern countries, and we wonder: "But, is Mediterranean still the Mar Nostrum (our sea) or is it a sea made in Japan?" It is time that the "tuna problem" is tackled at the international level, by regulating the fishing with norms everybody will obey, otherwise tuna will be only a memory before long." > > By 2008 the Japanese "super boats" hired flotillas of local boats from various Mediterranean fishing ports to catch the tuna for the "fattening nets", as well as to catch the smaller, and themselves depleted, sardines and pilchards, to feed the tuna. It takes generally 3 to 5 pounds of the smaller fish to get one pound of tuna. Only larger and fatter tuna are considered ideal for sushi and tagliata. The current call for Bluefin Tuna " reproduction sanctuaries" is a major move, and probably the only salvation in the Atlantic. However, Bluefin Ranching has recently been introduced off of Baja California and threatens our Pacific species in exactly the same manner. Thanks again Catherine, Paul Petrich > > > > From: ppetrich39 at hotmail.com > To: channel_islands_naturalist_corps at rain.org > Date: Wed, 7 Apr 2010 00:37:43 -0700 > Subject: [CINC] "End of the Line" UCSB 4/6 > > Hello Volunteers, Family, and friends, > At UCSB's McCune Conference Room yesterday there was a screening of the film End of the Line. This outstanding documentary promoted by National Geographic, examines the imminent extinction of many species of fish in our oceans. A surprising realization in 2002 led marine biologist throughout the world to expose the immense degree to which overfishing is depleting our fish stocks and is upsetting our marine ecosystems. In that year, it was found out that hugely exaggerated fish catches were being reported in China, and these false numbers skewed the world's catch totals in a way that hid the disastrous decline in worldwide fish catches that was well under way! > This film documents the recent disastrous demise of the fabled Newfoundland Cod fisheries, and examines how the Bluefin Tuna is on its way to extinction via present fisheries practices. Also, it looks at various local fisheries, such as those that feed the populations of the East African Coast, and how they are being robbed of their ancient sustainable livelihood by immense and technologically advanced foreign fishing fleets. > Also, the ecosystems of the world's oceans are shown to be changing drastically as big predators of the seas are no longer part of a balancing act. One example is the explosion in jelly fish populations in many regions. Aqua-farming is seen as contributing to this assault on marine ecosystems if for no other reason than 3 to 5 times as many pounds of local smaller fish species are caught to get one pound of the bigger fish species. > But, the film study concludes on a positive note! Though not perfect, the Alaskan fisheries is shown as a model that needs to be copied worldwide. Scientific research has merged with government action, and fishermen cooperation, to create a sustainable fish take year in and year out. Marine Reserves are lauded as a proven savior of fish and their ecosystems in regions where overfishing existed. Most of all, the film proclaims people have responded with urgent conservation measures once the knowledge of the threat has been learned. > It closes with the declaration that this generation may not want to be the one that sees the food bounties of the sea come to an end under its watch! For over 8,000 years previous generations have used the marine resources of the sea, and we know exactly what we have to do to continue using them. Individually, we can start by consuming only fish from sustainable fisheries, and by demanding that the knowledge we need is provided by fish suppliers. For example, if we want to save the Bluefin Tuna from extinction, don't eat sushi. Sushi by far creates the major market for that fish worldwide. Paul Petrich > > The New Busy is not the too busy. We had 77 elementary students, including their teacher and parent chaperones, from the Pine Crest schools in Moorpark and Simi aboard. They had a day they will never forget! Skipper Dave treated all aboard to whale sightings on they out and back that included such a variety of marine life that there was never a lapse in interest by all aboard when the whales were on dives. Two sightings on the way out included pods of 500 common dolphin, 1/3 of which were youngsters, huge numbers of feeding sea lions, and hundreds of diving cormorants plus pelicans. Two Minke Whales casually came feeding close to the boat. This was topped on the way home by a manna that activated an even more diverse feeding only six miles offshore Ventura. Three Humpbacks joined a sole Minke, along with the common dolphin, sea lions, cormorants, pelicans, and some shearwaters-all casually feeding, as if full. The buffet in all feedings were sardines or anchovies. On the Island IPCO crew members Jean, Dani, and Lori split the school kids into three hike groups. I took 11 open boat folks to Cavern Point and then on to Potato Harbor where we were escorted in our approach by the usual pair of ravin sentinels. My group saw no fox. However, many of the kids did sight them. Lola Lynch held the fort at the Visitor's Center and handelled courageously the onslaught sent to her by the rest of us! The day ended as we entered Ventura Harbor viewing a pastel sun setting into a velvet sea. I Sari Wa, Paul -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The squid are in and so are the Risso's! Then just about three miles off the coast of Ventura, we witnessed a huge feeding frenzy of birds, common dolphin, three humpback whales and one minke. The humpbacks did some close to the boat lunge feeding and the passengers, crew and me all went "oh, wow!" at the same time as we could see the baleen plates of two of the whales. This behavior continued for twenty minutes or so with our being able to see all three humpbacks come to the surface in unison with gaping yaws. As we left for the harbor the behavior continued behind us. We expect that some birds were swallowed in the process as they didn't all fly away before the lunging whales surfaced. Yikes. It was a memorable experience shared with Capt. Lee, Joel, Steve S., Luke and Pancho. Vis is an island in Croatia. Along with the small Italian Island of Ischia, in Italy, it supplied San Pedro with most of its immigrant fishermen that harvested from our local channels the most abundant tonnage of tuna and sardines the world had ever known. These fishermen included my grandfather and father. The historic vote on Vis, described in the article, started a counter movement to the growing tune ranching industry amongst the hundreds of islands off the Croatian Adriatic coast. This movement calls for more MPAs, as a-posed to more tuna ranches. Message-ID: Staci and others interested, The following link deals with research about our Channel Islands's own grouper type "monsters" making a possible return. Andrew Petrich ( a cousin) reported in 1900-1902 of catching monster sizes of individual fish upwards to 600 lbs from a row boat that would be towed for miles. This linked article refers to an "official" wight of 430 lbs caught by spear fishermen. This fishing was outlawed in 1970 when seven "monsters" were speared at Santa Cruz Island and sold illegally in San Pedro. The article updates scientific studies and the return of these giants to Anacapa Island in 2006. Had many a good chat with explanations about the sanctuary and park with the folks coming through. Thanks to Drew, who brought all the gear down and had it mostly set up as I arrived at 8. Debbie, Ali and Mimi took over for the afternoon shift and were just as busy as we were in the morning.
