Ocean and Island People,
Here is an interesting 2003 article from Italy that supplements Catherine's current news on the plight of Bluefin Tuna. Vis is an island in Croatia. Along with the small Italian Island of Ischia, in Italy, it supplied San Pedro with most of its immigrant fishermen that harvested from our local channels the most abundant tonnage of tuna and sardines the world had ever known. These fishermen included my grandfather and father.
The historic vote on Vis, described in the article, started a counter movement to the growing tune ranching industry amongst the hundreds of islands off the Croatian Adriatic coast. This movement calls for more MPAs, as a-posed to more tuna ranches. It should be of interest to all clear thinking ocean environmentalist, that this vote on the island of Vis was influenced heavily by the American-Croatian descendants of those who voted. Keep o swimming! Paul
