Today’s IPCO trip to Santa Cruz was interesting with beautiful sunny weather and a small but appreciate group of day visitors. My hike was with 8 attentive people from Korea, Ireland and Calif. There was plenty of time for relaxing and enjoying the beach. It was a very low tide in the late afternoon when I heard some teenage campers on the beach making a lot of noise. I went over to see what was happening and found that large Humboldt squid were beaching themselves and the kids were throwing them back in the water. After several tries most were saved. I did see a group of 6 large male sea lions going back and forth close to shore. I think they may have caused the beaching. On the way home we found about a dozen Risso’s dolphins doing some lunge feeding. It was a memorable trip.
