It stayed on the surface next to the boat for quite a while, then departed for the deep. Portraits of this animal are now posted to the boat photo site: http://www.condorexpressphotos.com/Other/2012-03-31-SB-Channel/ Captain Dave Beezer, a trained mammal rescue person and CIMWI volunteer, told the CX guests that the animal was a "weaner." Pups are born from December to March. Mothers nurse their pups for about 28 days then wean them by rather abruptly heading off and leaving them to fend for themselves on the beach. At this time the weaners have lost their newborn black fur and are uniformly brown, and they often form weaner pods on the beach. In fairness, mothers need to get back to deep water and feed, since they have been fasting the entire time they are on the beach and may have lost 30% of their body weight. Students from county middle and high schools passed through the Anacapa Pavilion seeking stamps to complete their passports and be eligible to win prizes. We had a marine table, a fox and eagle table, the matching game, a scuba table and a challenge to name photos of various mammals, birds and fish found in the Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary. Students and teachers mobbed the various tables and demonstrated significant interest in learning about their local waters and islands. With fewer exhibitors this year, more quality time was spent at each exhibit. On March 27, CINC volunteers Marty Flam and Pam Yerger assisted Park Rangers Carol Peterson and Kelly Moore at the Blackstock Junior High School Annual Career Fair. Pam and Kelly handled a group of students interested in becomiing a marine biologist and Marty and Carol had a group interested in the career of a Park Ranger. After classroom presentations, we moved our exhibits to the outdoor courtyard for all students to enjoy during their lunch hour. Once again we were mobbed with students interested in the fox, eagle, scuba and marine exhibits. Students earned raffle tickets for asking exceptional questions and we handed out a number of tickets. Questions were well thought out and students were extremely interested in learning not only about the careers but also about the Islands and Channel. On March 29 CINC volunteers Kathy Sandoval (and her pre-vet daughter home for spring break), and Pam Yerger joined Carol Peterson at the San Cayentano School Family Science Night in Fillmore. Kids as young as 4 were mesmerized by the Island Fox and eagle exhibit, including a demonstration of the tracking devices and collars used to locate both eagles and foxes. Older kids were challenged to identify the photos of birds, mammals and fish while the younger ones mobbed the craft table to color a banner reading Watch Wildlife Safely and glue it to binoculars made of toilet paper rolls! At all 3 events, we were busy non-stop from start to finish. Feedback comments were quite positive and students, teachers and parents alike enjoyed themselves, asked great questions, and went home with a better understanding of the Islands and the Channel waters. Dan the man got his recognition have telling the boat that he spotted it. He even wanted tips. Thanks to the great crew Captain Jason, Dee and Poncho. Another day in paradise. On the way home Cow calf gray whale pair off Rincon point. I pulled over to watch. 1 spout was so much smaller and they were very close to shore. Shortly out of the Ventura harbor we encountered the Bottle Nose leisurely swimming about. Folks we delighted, hoping this was a good sign of the day. Yet, with a good 4-5 foot swell and much white capping, we soon had several folks on the stern, nursing the queezies. The rest of the trip was seemingly in vain as far as whales were concerned. Headed west out of the harbor to the Platform ridge line and then turned east cruising the ridge in search. Finding none, we went on to Anacapa's south side taking in the many Sea Lions sunning themselves on those southern AI beaches. As we approached, several rose up and headed for the water, to the delight of the folks on board. Coming an around AI Arch, folks were delighted at the beauty of the the area. Cameras were out and humming. Time to return, with no whale sitings under our belt, just out side of the harbor a good bit, Captain Jimmy stopped the boat upon suddenly siting two gray whales right in front of us. He was as startled as were the two Grays. Yet, after hanging around for a good time and late for our return, we finally had to figure they had buzzed off, surfacing well out of sight. PM 100 Common Dolphin No Whales This trip we angled out and headed for SCI waters. The wind was suppose to increase in the afternoon, but did the opposite, quieting down quite a lot, yet with still some not feeling that great, most did very well. In the steady, yet not fast, crossing we came on the Commons as they played with us and we with them. As usual, the folks we delighted. Babies were in the group, which added to the good pleasure of the folks. Still looking for the Grays (or Humpbacks), we approached SCI at about Platts Harbor, I would say, and turned east, cruising very close to give the folks a good sense of this area of SCI. The folks were quite delighted and taking may pictures of the features, birds and wave action on the cliffs. Even some members of the human species were spotted on the cliff tops above. One, a friendly, was even waving to us, or that is what we guessed that individual was doing. Being a wild animal, it is hard to tell why they do what they do. But we enjoyed it anyway. We made a stop at Scorpion Harbor to pick up a good number of campers returning to the mainland. Heading back, it was a beautiful palmy day, yet still with a good breeze, so some of the young folks had a great time making sure they got themselves well soaked in the port side spray. No whales this day, not for a good solid try of cruising to find them. Folks from all over as usual, Switzerland, Michigan, Texas, Louisiana, Philadelphia, with a good representation of locals enjoying the day, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Ventura, Newberry Park filled out the crowds. Captain Jimmy, and Crew of Mike and Luke did their usual fine job of seeking them out, and keeping the folks happy. Tom Boyd was my sidekick Naturalist on this trip, always a fun day with him on board. Today was truly the "Calm before the Storm." Our first stop going west along the coast was off Goleta to view nothing more than the ocean bottom at 30 to 40 feet below us, in very clear detail. Skipper Matt said the water clarity was the best he could recall in recent years. The sun shone brightly, the surf was near nil along the coast, and the ocean surface looked like a velvet tablecloth. We saw a pod of 300 active Common Dolphin very soon, not far from the coast. They seemed to enjoy the especially clear water conditions as we could see many of them playing deep (turning over) under others who enjoyed riding the bow's pressure wake. Humpback blows were spotted prior to getting to the Gap, and we soon enjoyed watching 3 Humpbacks feed and fluke. Not long after turning for home we saw a Mamma Humpback and her large calf fluke and one actually breach twice. Fifty more Common Dolphin approached us to play not more than 2 miles from the coast. Passengers aboard came from distant places like Sweden, Norway, Germany, England, and the landlocked states of Nevada and Colorado. PM trip: NO WHALEShuge pod of apx 2000 dolphins with hundreds of babies and juveniles - feeding, mating and playing As Paul said about the Condor trip, it was the calm before the storm. Both morning and afternoon trips on the Vanguard left in calm seas with lots of sunshine. The morning trip headed along the coast and near Port Hueneme we spotted a lone humpback who eventually came close to the boat and provide passengers with excellent views of spouts and tail flukes. Very clear tail marking were able to be seen and we got at least 4 tail shots. Then as we headed back to Channel Islands Harbor we spotted a cow/calf pair of gray whales on their northward home migration. They stayed mostly just below the surface but did show several blows and a couple of times passengers were able to see their backs. On our way out we also saw a very small group of common dolphins several of which came to ride the boat wake. We could see others in the distance but they never came very close to the boat. About 25 passengers from New Zealand and North Carolina, as well as several local family groups on spring break, were delighted with the sightings. We had one birthday gal onboard who said that it was the best birthday ever! The afternoon group was a bit larger than the morning group and had folks from Germany, Switzerland, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Nebraska and again there were a number of local families enjoying a day on the water for spring break. We were unable to head down to see if we could find the humpback and/or greys from the morning due to live fire exercises in the area, so we headed out to Gina and when we found no sign of dolphins or whales, Captain Jason took us out to Anacapa and delighted passengers with a terrific view of Cabrillo's Arch and a number of sunning sea lions on the rocks. The still illusive whales and dolphins were not to be found until we were a couple miles off the east side of the island and found a huge pod of about 2000 dolphins. It appeared to be a nursery pod with what appeared to be hundreds of babies and juveniles. they also exhibited some mating behaviors and had clearly been feeding as hundreds of Western Gulls swarmed the outlying waters for any remnants of their lunch! We stayed with this pod for quite some time until we had to head back to port. Even though we did not see any whales, passengers were so thrilled with the dolphins they didn't seem to mind. This was the last whale watching trip until blue season on the Vanguard and Captain Jason, crew Steve and Joel, did an incredible job narrating for passengers and making sure they were safe, fed and happy. My sidekick would be responsible for the whale watch kit which I will bring, and set items out to be viewed under a watchful eye at the end when attendees are asked to come forward to peak and ask questions. We found the first pair of mother and calf right off Ledbetter Beach.? We stayed with those two for about an hour.? Mommy was teaching her baby how to spy hop and treated us to the lesson!??? Bottlenose dolphins enjoyed the company of this pair and also frolicking to the delight of those on board the Condor.? They were very amorous too in the glassy sea.?? Second mother and calf spotted swimming parallel to us off Hendry's Beach very very close to shore.? I am certain some of the beach-goers on the shore saw this couple as they were on the shore side of the kelp, just beyond where the waves were starting to build.? We spotted another pair behind us at one point in the trip and the ocean was suddenly alive with whales in all directions and bottlenose jumping, splashing and waving pec fins a few times.? One dolphin came part way out of the water propelled by his tail and looked just like Flipper used to - everyone on board was thrilled to pieces (me too).???? Several private boats joined in to watch, as well one very intrepid person on a paddle board.? Passengers from Germany, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kentucky, New Jersey, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Paradise and Los Angeles,CA.? Many thanks to Captain Dave, Matt and Dennis for a lovely and very exciting day in the channel.??? Derek sends the following information about the scorpion species found on Santa Cruz Island. This is the only information I have. Tim, Thanks again for your assistance with the permit for Santa Cruz Island. What a wonderful place! The endemic species, Pseudouroctonus minimus thompsoni (which I will likely recognize as a distinct species rather than as a subspecies of P. minimus) is there in great abundance, and it took very little time for us to collect the needed series...under the supervision of a group of curious Island Foxes, I might add. We didn't see any other scorpion species, and judging from the density of the P. m. thompsoni population, and its occurrence in most habitat types that we examined, I suspect it is the sole scorpion inhabitant of the area. I'll put together a report as soon as I have a chance. Meanwhile, I've attached an uncaptioned and a captioned image of P. m. thompsoni that you are welcome to use. The resolution is likely satisfactory for inclusion on a web page, and if you need higher resolution for prints, I can send a much larger file on a CD. But in the afternoon hike with campers to Cavern Point found a humpback whale traveling west from Cavern Point overlook toward Chinese Harbor, and almost at the same time spied a bald eagle soaring below the cliff about 300 yards off the island. Could not see the markings blue or orange, though. Special mention from Saturday, April 21 saw a raven with a fish in it's mouth fly from Scorpion Cove toward the ranch property. That was a rare sight for me. Looked it up on the Internet but couldn't find much, just that they will eat anything, even fish. I wondered if the raven stole the fish from a gull or pelican or something else? As has been the case with some regularity since the ER moms and calves began their northern trek, each pair was spotted very close (approx.100 yds) to shore. Eight minutes following our departure Captain Mat spotted the first of the two pairs and we paralleled their course for about 45 minutes. Neither mom or calf were very showy, mostly snorkeling, a quick inhalation and back underwater leaving a tell tale trail of foot prints as they continued on their way, at a steady three knots. The pair made only one diversion, heading north for a few minutes toward the surf line, before reverting to a more sensible course. Just beyond Hendry?s Beach we left the pair, but first watched as a surfer (with mask and snorkel) slipped off his board to take a close-up look at the pair. >From here we travel west to Campus Point and while the wind picked-up (force three) the wind and ground swell were minimal, so we had a comfortable ride. Capt Dave assumed the helm and we headed south for a few minutes and then east back toward the harbor. Our second and final encounter with an ER mom and calf pair was like the first, spotted right in the vicinity of the Stearns Wharf duplicating the behaviors of their predecessors of 90 minutes earlier. Naturalist Cal Meuser and Pat Hart shared their knowledge of the marine world with passengers, while I was making an attempt to take images (PID) of these Gray Whales, that might be of interest to researchers? Capts. Mat and Dave and Matt provided a great day for all. Marilyn and Carolyn on duty as volunteers and yours truly, who actually got some decent photo ID shots... I think! She was very big, a golden color and shy. I hope she stays around so everyone gets a chance to see her. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I have a correction to make on my report last Tuesday (4/24) about the whale count from shore. Michael Smith and his amazing crew of counters are known as their own non-profit 501now. They share their data with multiple whale research agencies, including NOAA's SW Fisheries Science Center. They count from what is noe"Counter Point" , at the Coal Oil Point Reserve overlooking the western reaches of the Campus Point MPA in Goleta.
