On March 21, CINC volunteers Kathy Van Slyke, Cliff Rodriguez and Pam Yerger joined Carol Peterson and Kelly Moore of the Park Service at the annual Ventura County Science fair at the fairgrounds. Students from county middle and high schools passed through the Anacapa Pavilion seeking stamps to complete their passports and be eligible to win prizes. We had a marine table, a fox and eagle table, the matching game, a scuba table and a challenge to name photos of various mammals, birds and fish found in the Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary. Students and teachers mobbed the various tables and demonstrated significant interest in learning about their local waters and islands. With fewer exhibitors this year, more quality time was spent at each exhibit.
On March 27, CINC volunteers Marty Flam and Pam Yerger assisted Park Rangers Carol Peterson and Kelly Moore at the Blackstock Junior High School Annual Career Fair. Pam and Kelly handled a group of students interested in becomiing a marine biologist and Marty and Carol had a group interested in the career of a Park Ranger. After classroom presentations, we moved our exhibits to the outdoor courtyard for all students to enjoy during their lunch hour. Once again we were mobbed with students interested in the fox, eagle, scuba and marine exhibits. Students earned raffle tickets for asking exceptional questions and we handed out a number of tickets. Questions were well thought out and students were extremely interested in learning not only about the careers but also about the Islands and Channel.
On March 29 CINC volunteers Kathy Sandoval (and her pre-vet daughter home for spring break), and Pam Yerger joined Carol Peterson at the San Cayentano School Family Science Night in Fillmore. Kids as young as 4 were mesmerized by the Island Fox and eagle exhibit, including a demonstration of the tracking devices and collars used to locate both eagles and foxes. Older kids were challenged to identify the photos of birds, mammals and fish while the younger ones mobbed the craft table to color a banner reading Watch Wildlife Safely and glue it to binoculars made of toilet paper rolls!
At all 3 events, we were busy non-stop from start to finish. Feedback comments were quite positive and students, teachers and parents alike enjoyed themselves, asked great questions, and went home with a better understanding of the Islands and the Channel waters.
Pam Yerger for all
