900 trip...
4 cow/calf pairs ...visited twice
200 Commons
1200 trip...
1 cow/calf pair
300 commons
About 75 people from all over, including Santa Barbara, were on each trip. The Condor hadn't passed the bait barge when Capt. Mat spotted 2, then 4.... then 8 spouts! These cooperatives whales proceeded to close ranks as we followed them up the coast. A short break from the whales was taken to observe a pod of commons with many babies! Then the Condor caught up to the same whales, for another look. Clear skies, Beaufort/1 and about 2-4 foot swells. Not bad!
For the 1200 trip, the single pair was spotted off the Mesa, just outside the coastal kelp. A cooperative cow/calf pair, they changed directions, the baby rolled over a couple of times and a spyhop. The pod of commons seems to have grown a bit, but probably the same pod as the earlier trip.
Capts. Mat and Dave and Matt provided a great day for all. Marilyn and Carolyn on duty as volunteers and yours truly, who actually got some decent photo ID shots... I think!
