From davidchubb at cox.net Wed Aug 1 15:51:56 2012 From: davidchubb at cox.net (David Chubb) Date: Wed, 01 Aug 2012 15:51:56 -0700 Subject: [CINC] Digital Program for Photo-Identification of Bottlenose Dolphin Message-ID: <5019B30C.9040502@cox.net> A professor of computer science, Kelly Debure, at Eckerd College in St Petersburg, Florida, has developed a program to provide digital photo ID of bottlenose dolphins. In a press release from Newswise, Debure explains, "The program ranks catalog fin images from 'most like' to 'least like' the new unknown fin image and presents images for side by side comparison." We've all heard of the tedious manual examination of photos needed to ID whales in the SB Channel. I assume someday we'll see a system like this used here. According to the Newswire release: "The DARWIN software is free and available for download. Over 20 years, Debure and Eckerd students have continued to refine the software and are adapting the software's algorithms to make it appropriate for identification of other species. Debure says, ?Although it was originally developed for use with bottlenose dolphins, it has been used by research groups on related species such as fin whales, indo-pacific humpback dolphins, spinner dolphins, and basking sharks.? Captain Matt, back from a well deserved vacation, guided 86 passengers, myself, and PID Shirley Johnson to a seemingly unending show put on by fluke-happy Humpbacks and Blues! We went straight out to the gap between SCI and SRI and stayed there viewing the total of 18 Humpbacks cruising and diving as they fed on krill, until it was time to start back after a visit to the Painted Cave. Shirley did not have a break at all in recording and taking photos while near the Gap. Many Humpbacks cruised with us in our direction and came right next to the boat. The nearby tail flukes provided by the diving Humpbacks were the most visible and close by I have witnessed in seven years with the CINC. Two large Blue whales joined in the show, and also provided awesome near- by tail flukes. They, too, lalligaged in our area: For over an hour. Our passengers were from all over the place: Arkansas, Sweden, Russia, Switzerland, Germany, the UK, Holland, Poland, and Canada, as well as Calif. They were all awestruck. Deckhands Denise and Kelly had no worries today about any of them becoming sea-sick, as the sea and winds were very calm. On the way out we saw the seven Rissos, also close by, and we got entertained three times by small pods of Common Dolphin. On our way back, within 5 miles of the Painted Cave, we had our largest encounter with playful Commons. On the way back we had a lot of questions about access to our CINP, and the new CINP newsletter, The Island Guide, was a big hit! It is now stocked in whale kits. After an auspicious encounter with some common dolphins just outside the harbor, we were under way, hoping to make it to Santa Rosa Island and some whales before the wind caught up with us. But despite wonderful views of several large groups of common dolphins throughout the day, the whales eluded us, and we trekked ever farther west, approaching San Miguel Island before turning back. Barbara was exemplary as always in keeping spirits up and sharing excellent information with the very interested passengers. Just as we had all given up hope, Captain Dave's eagle eyes spotted two humpbacks right in front of Santa Cruz Island, with one more farther east. We spent some quality time with the pair, getting great close-ups and several playful approaches, and arriving back at the harbor an hour late (which we all agreed was time well spent). Although some passengers succumbed to seasickness, the vast majority were delighted with the experience. Passengers from Japan, France, Germany, Norway, England, and all around the US and California joined us for another perfect day on the Channel. Over 90% as well indicated they had never been to "their' CINP. Tara Brown and Bruce Mathews did a fantastic job, as usual, in engaging with the audience and their questions after our powerpoint. Along with displaying the items in our whale kit, they dealt with a lot of questions about how to get to our CINP as well as go whale watching. We had pamphlets for the most interested, of course. Tara enthralled the audience again with the Chumash Rainbow Bridge story, and Bruce revisited his most wonderus whale watch trip of the summer. A family in attendance shared with us that they had seen a couple sea otters on a previous visit to El Capitan, when we got to that clip for our discussion. This was our last El Capitan presentation for the summer. It was a great run, averaging 118 in attendance. Here is a report on the ACS charter last Saturday and also on the deep water birding trip three weeks ago. Take care, Bernardo August 11, 2012 The ACS trip ended up being pretty close to a perfect whale watching excursion. The weather was nice all day (no morning fog) and the wind stayed under ten knots. We tallied some impressive numbers being out there twice as long as on a normal trip. Birds are still pretty scarce but we did find a few gems. We left the dock a little after 8 a.m. and headed straight for the west end of SCI. On the way across we just ran into one pod of dolphins after the other. 200 Dc, 100 Dc, 100 Dc, 100 D sp., and then 650 Dd right before we hit a patch with a few blues and humpbacks. One blue and a group of two humpbacks and a single worked well together to alternate their time at the surface so that we always had something to look at. The depth finder was showing a solid layer of krill at 20 fathoms. After a little over an hour of this, just as we were beginning to head west a little, another pod of 2000 Dc came out way. The animals were obviously socializing and there was a lot of mating going on. The pod even changed directions; they arrived from the west and followed us westward. A little while later, Captain Mat went out of our way for a couple of miles to check out another very active pod, which turned out to be 450 Dd, our second pod of that species for the day. Between the middle of the gap and Carrington we hit the mother lode. There were spouts as far as the eye could see and again the blues and humpbacks took turns at the surface so that we never got tired of either species. we did have a nice friendly approach from a humpback and two of the blues were a cow/calf pair. Just before we left, two Dalls' porpoises approached to bow ride and another pod of 1200 Dc came through. We tallied 18 blues and seven humpbacks the Condor way; we only counted the ones that were close enough for ID pictures, not whales off in the distance. And we didn't count any of the dophin pods that we saw on the way back across the channel since those were like to be ones we had encountered on the way out. Bird number were very low again. We had an Osprey in the harbor perched on the mast of the Double Dolphin as we left, giving all excellent views. Sooty and Pink-footed Shearwaters, Red-necked Phalaropes and Western Gulls were scattered throughout the channel without areas of clear concentration. We saw three Black and one Ashy Storm-petrel, with the ashy being within a few feet of the black giving us a great opportunity to compare the size. The best species of the day were six Sabine's Gulls about four miles off Carrington. These striking birds breed in the high Arctic and migrate past our area relatively far from shore; they are more often encountered outside of the islands than in the channel, although sometimes a few individuals can be found along the coast or even inland. Two Cassin's and one Rhinoceros Auklets were the only alcids of the day. Visited the area off the west end of Santa Cruz Island and off Carrington Point on Santa Rosa Island. 13 species (+1 other taxa) Pink-footed Shearwater 15 Sooty Shearwater 35 Ashy Storm-Petrel 1 Black Storm-Petrel 3 storm-petrel sp. 1 Brandt's Cormorant 3 Brown Pelican 30 Red-necked Phalarope 45 Sabine's Gull 6 Heermann's Gull 30 Western Gull 120 California Gull 1 Cassin's Auklet 2 Rhinoceros Auklet 1 July 21, 2012 We had a pretty eventful trip on the Condor Express Saturday, July 21. It was scheduled for 13 hours but turned into a 15-hour adventure. It was a deep water birding trip and we did find 24 species, including some good birds. Not very high numbers and no real rarities, which is what birders always hope for, but we did see some Southern California deep water specialties. On the marine mammal front is was more productive with ten species. It was a little frustrating because not much time was devoted to the mammals; we passed by dozens of blows without checking them out. We left the dock just after 7 am and headed towards the west end of San Miguel Island. Before we got to mid-channel conditions became too rough and Captain Mat veered back towards the coast. Before we got to Point Conception we cut across the channel at a steeper angle and headed towards a point well west of SMI. From there we turned south, which was a somewhat comfortable ride, to the Rodriguez Seamount and from there to the San Juan Seamount, from where we turned east for a while which was the smoothest ride of the day and then north to SCI/SRI gap. At the furthest point we were 94 miles from the dock. As has been the case recently, there were very low numbers of birds in the channel. Between the harbor and the west end of the channel we counted 145 Sooty Shearwaters and four Pink-footed Shearwaters. Hundreds if not thousands of shearwaters would not have been unexpected for this time of the year. Unexpected were five Black-vented Shearwaters. We usually don't expect this species until later in the fall; July arrivals of any significant numbers in our area probably are a sign of nesting failure on the breeding islands off Central Baja. We had two Bottlenose Dolphins in the harbor and several pods of Long-beaked Common Dolphins in the channel. The next segment was 24 miles long from the entrance to the channel to the Rodriguez Seamount. We found Ashy and Black Storm-petrels on this leg, as well as seven Black-footed Albatrosses and a South Polar Skua. Just outside the channel we found about eight Northern Right Whale Dolphins. The highlight of the trip was a pod of six killer whales that we found 14 miles west of SMI. One male, one juvenile and four female types. Alisa Schulman Janiger could not find these orcas in any of the catalogs she checked, so they are probably animals that have not been identified before. That is always an extra thrill. We got great looks at them during one surfacing that was close enough for useable ID photos, but it would have been impossible to follow them on their northbound heading without being washed off the decks. We had single, young California Sea Lions throughout the trip and on this leg we caught brief glimpses of a couple of Northern Fur Seals. As we continued south from the Rodriguez to the San Juan Seamount, the Black and Ashy Storm-petrels were replaced by Leach's Storm-petrels, of which we saw three different sub species. There was also one Brown Pelican, much further offshore than expected. We caught a brief glimpse of a Fin Whale on this leg, the closest look we got at this species all day, and we saw several distant breaches that could have been Humpback Whales. We also passed several tall blows. East of the San Juan Seamount we had great looks at a Red-billed Tropicbird that circled the boat repeatedly as this species often does. We also got decent looks at a pair of Cuvier's Beaked Whales, and had a small pod of Short-beaked Common Dolphins in an area we almost always encounter this species. The northbound leg towards the SCI/SRI gap was pretty rough with constant spray over the wheelhouse. We didn't add any new bird species and we passed many tall blows, likely from fin whales. About 20 miles south of the islands we stopped for Scripps' Murrelet in an area with a mixed pod of Risso's and offshore Bottlenose Dolphins. As we tried to resume speed, Captain Mat was unable to get all engines into gear. After a lot of troubleshooting, Mat and Dave used their ingenuity to put the engines into gear mechanically down in the engine compartments, but that took almost an hour. We ended up crossing the gap at nightfall and didn't have any daylight left for the blues and humpbacks in the channel that would have bumped our count of marine mammal species to 12. We had to make arrangements for the Truth to leave its slip for our arrival and for a couple of harbor patrol boats to tow and push the Condor Express to the dock since the shifters weren't working. The crew spent another couple of hours working on the problem trying to salvage the next day's sold out trip but it was in vain. Turns out that water had seeped into one of the outside control stations and shorted it out. It was impossible to reach any support personnel on the weekend so the boat wasn't back in business until Tuesday. It was overcast nearly all day but relatively calm waters. We saw first a small pod of Common Dolphins, then a rather large pod of 1000 Common Dolphins on our way out to the whale feeding waters. Further on we came upon the Bottlenose, and a rather large pod it was, at least larger than I generally see. When we reached the whales, it was a real bonanza. We had Humpbacks approach the boat, taking close long glances at the passengers, and baptizing us with their exhalations. The Condor Express of course was along with us. Both Blues and Humpbacks treated us to flukes. There were spouts everywhere in addition to the official count of 12 Humpbacks and 8 Blues. Then on into the Painted Cave. A bald eagle was just visible but visible none the less at Cueva Valdez. Pelican Harbor was full of summer boaters, barely a spare spot to drop a hook. We retrieved hikers and campers at Prisoners then headed home. In addition to Capt. Anthony, Dani gave excellent narration, and Steve provided additional interpretation and guest services. Bob Holmes was along as Naturalist. Dean Benjamin -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... They were very excited and vocal about the whole trip. A fun group, indeed. We had some good exchanges. A bit of a breezy day, Captain Lee took us near shore, west to UCSB, then across to ride the wind shadow of the mainland before turning to the SCI-SRI gap and Whale Country. This proved fortunate for all, as it was a good bit breezy "in country," with a corresponding bit of seas, cranking up. Most folks held up pretty well. Crossing, we came on a few very small groups of Commons, then later, out came the mega-pod of about a 1000. The folks were in "delight city" to be sure, at such a sight. Many babies were sighted as well, along with the usual high fliers in this most animated large pod. The whales were there, as anticipated, and in good numbers, coming on a couple of Humpbacks then a couple more then a Blue, and you begin to get the picture, what has been a rather "usual" happening all summer long, many cetacea nearby and several at a distance. Very shortly on our arrival and first sightings, in came the Condor Express, sharing the early sightings. After a time they headed off to the islands and we continued to enjoy more encounters with the great cetacea. Mostly, they were busy feeding and showed little interest in the Island Adventurer, keeping their distance. However, just as we were preparing to head off to the Islands, up popped a juvenile Blue right in front of the boat. Four to five breathing cycles and keeping very close to us, up popped a very large Blue, quite likely, the Mom, and told the youngster to get back down below, as she did only two blows and was down, shortly after chasing the "little one," down to the deep. They did not show again. CINC Naturalist, Anna Hilliard rode with me and did her usual fine job of chatting it up with the folks and keeping the sightings log up to date, ensuring the counts and species were all correct. Folks from all over, including Germany(this couple was visiting their 11th U.S. National Park in three weeks), and many Californians enjoyed this fine day. Captain Lee, always on top of it and ensuring a good ride and info for the folks, with his Crew of Captain Steve and Joel, kept everyone well informed, and comfortable. Another fine day on the water. What a show! The humpbacks were busy feeding at the surface, but showed frequent flukes on their dives. As the day wore on, the behaviors changed from just feeding to lobtails (3), tail throws (9), and 2 breaches--one where the entire body of the whale was above the water! The blues were also on the surface, showing most of their bodies, but not flukes. There were many more whales in the distance. Captain Dave said we would head toward Painted Cave, but had to delay our departure twice because we were surrounded by whales. After a trip along the island with great accompanying narrative, we entered Painted Cave to everyone's pleasure and amazement. Today's sightings included: - 3 Bottlenose Dolphins - 400 Common Dolphins - 6 Humpbacks (with more in the vicinity) - 4 Blue Whales (with more in the vicinity) - 1 Northern Right Whale Dolphin In addition to people from the US and Canada there were three additional continents represented including guests from Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Senegal, Singapore, and Ireland. It was a regular United Nations of whale watching. Today was typical of what most of us have been experiencing except for the fact that the marine layer never lifted and we only saw Santa Cruz when we approached for the journey into Painted Cave. As with most trips the passengers were afforded some excellent views, especially when the 4 Humpbacks surfaced almost directly next to the boat. My statement that I always make to passengers, "part of the excitement is that you never know what you might see" rang true for me as well as fellow naturalist Larry Harris. As we were streaming away from our first encounter with common dolphins Larry and I looked back and saw a dark, sleek, dorsal fin-less creature among the commons. It was something that was brand new to both of us. I consulted with Captain Dave who confirmed that what I described was a Northern Right Whale Dolphin. Unfortunately at this time it was nowhere to be seen. Subsequent research again confirmed this sighting. So, I was able to add another notch to my marine mammal species list. Needless to say that was an exciting sighting. We also saw, off in the distance, our good friend John Calambokidis who was doing research on whales within the vicinity of the shipping lanes. In addition to the aforementioned Larry Harris, Hal Altman was also on board doing PID. At the helm was the rock solid Captain Dave with Brooke in the galley and Matt on deck. Yes, it was another great day in the channel. Dick Bellman -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Two of our CINC members were on duty, and did their respective interpretation missions so well, they were a positive topic of conversation amongst the passengers on the way back. Carolyn Green was on the island as an overnight volunteer, and came back with us, along with 19 kayaks and the camper-kayakers who spent most of the week our there with her. Her campers were really impressed with Carolyn's special history lesson ( in first person? ) of Buster Hyder's growing up on the island 1914 to 1929. Carolyn met with Marla Daily in Santa Barbara the morning of our CINP picnic to gain specifics about Buster and his experiences on the island. She stopped by Rincon Point for a splash in the ocean prior to most of you could show up for the social. Tara Brown had the SBI day hike. She did a fantastic job on the Montrose Settlement seabird restoration project as it applies to SBI, relating it to the ongoing plant restoration for nesting habitat, then to our MPAs. Message: It all starts with ocean health, even way out on SBI! Speaking of ocean health, on the trip back Captain Jimmy circumnavigated SBI and we were all treated to repeated air-born gliding displays by Flying Fish! I have not seen so many flying fish in action since Buster Hyder was my boss as the owner of 22nd Street Sportfishing Landing in San Pedro. I was a deckhand on one of Frank Hall's boats starting in S'55 out of the Landing. Frank was to buy out Buster for the Landing in the 60s after being a partner in the ownership for awhile.. I think it was under Buster and Frank's ownership when sportfishing boats out of the landing were Southern California pioneers in starting whale watching as a money making activity. They were encouraged to do so by the late John Olguin, who was a founding father of both the Cabrillo Museum > Aquarium ( when Chief of Lifeguards at Cabrillo Beach in the1950s! ) and the American Cetacean Society, both in San Pedro. And again, speaking of ocean health, Captain Jimmy gave us all a wonderful lesson on how to enhance it. As we left the flying fish display for home, he diverted his boat to have deckhand and co-skipper ,Poncho, scoop up a floating party big party balloon. We soon all got a lesson about how said balloons break up into tiny pieces, never to decompose, and contaminate the ocean food chain that., Not too many links away in that chain, these particles would find their way to sea creatures to do them ill (like Flying Fish as well as whales). The crew in the Galley led the passengers in a round of applause. This Saturday is the deadline for discounted registration to the 8th California Islands Symposium, which will be held at the Ventura Beach Marriott on October 23 to 25. The program looks excellent once again, more information can be found at http://www.catalinaconservancy.org/index.php?s=wildlife&p=california_islands_symposium. An almost full boat of passengers from Kenya, Canada, Turkey, Ohio, Texas and cities too numerous to mention were not disappointed by Captain Matt as he took us to the East rather than out to the normal gap area and quickly found us several small pods of commons and then 2 humpbacks. We stayed with these 2 whales for over an hour as they put on quite a show for passengers. Rope and a second female came right up to the boat and logged alongside giving us a close up show of heads, mouths, and fins and bodies. Some spy hopping took place but we only got a couple views of tail flukes. Off in the distance we spotted several minkes, and passengers were able to get some good looks at their fins and quick dives. We shared some of our whale time with the IPCO's Islander. We passed through several pods of commons, one of which was fairly large and populated with numerous babies and juveniles. They put on the normal show of bow riding, jumping and swimming right up and under the bow and sides of the boat, all to the delight of passengers, many of whom were on their first whale watching trip. Captain Matt spotted a mola mola splashing on the surface and took the boat by for a nice view before we attempted to head out to the islands. the wind was picking up out there and he decided it would take us 2+ hours to get the additional 14 miles, so he took us back to the whales and we watched them for awhile longer before turning back towards home port. Crew Matt and Brooke were kept busy keeping passengers happy and fed! Fellow naturalists were Dawn Erickson and Carolyn McCleslky on PID.
