Stats:
Common Dolphins - 1500
Bottlenose Dolphins - 25
Blue Whales - 8
Humpback Whales - 12
(many more whales unofficially)
Another great day on the water, captained by Anthony Lombardi. It was
overcast nearly all day but relatively calm waters. We saw first a small
pod of Common Dolphins, then a rather large pod of 1000 Common Dolphins on
our way out to the whale feeding waters. Further on we came upon the
Bottlenose, and a rather large pod it was, at least larger than I generally
see.
When we reached the whales, it was a real bonanza. We had Humpbacks
approach the boat, taking close long glances at the passengers, and
baptizing us with their exhalations. The Condor Express of course was along
with us. Both Blues and Humpbacks treated us to flukes. There were spouts
everywhere in addition to the official count of 12 Humpbacks and 8 Blues.
Then on into the Painted Cave. A bald eagle was just visible but visible
none the less at Cueva Valdez. Pelican Harbor was full of summer boaters,
barely a spare spot to drop a hook. We retrieved hikers and campers at
Prisoners then headed home.
In addition to Capt. Anthony, Dani gave excellent narration, and Steve
provided additional interpretation and guest services. Bob Holmes was along
as Naturalist.
