Hello Ocean and Island People,
Friday night Tara Brown, Shirley Johnson and myself did the last Marine Mammals of the CINMS and CINP outreach program at our local State Beaches. One hundred seventeen campers attended our powerpoint program, at the Carpinteria State Beach amphitheater. In six summer campfire presentations we reached 601 campers and walk-ins with our same marine mammal presentation. This crowd was over 50% children: Which was a general pattern each time. However, we did attract camping youth groups, as well as the Interpretive Ranger's Junior Rangers. Aa before, those in attendance were over 90% from California, and no foreign tourist. And, again, about 20% responded to having been whale watching, and only one or two families responded to having been on our CINP. Yet, questions about both abounded at the end, and pamphlets, plus a few of our new CINP newsletter, were handed out ( one per family asking ).
A highlight of this evening's program was arranged by Leanne Roth, the Park Interpretive Aid. In giving recognition to her Junior Ranger's program, she invited an 11th grade Girl Scout from Pasadena to give an introductory talk on the Great North Pacific Gyre Plastic Patch. Katie Burke, an Empress Scout who was given the honor to march in the Pasadena Rose Parade this year, did a fantastic job! And it led right into our emphasis of keeping plastic bags and harmful garbage out of our local oceans, for the sake of the stars of our show, as well as for the sake of our own species of mammals. I Sari Wa, Paul
