A few sprinkles here & there, but most of the moisture held off until we headed back for port for my favorite part of the trip: The 60-foot-surf boarding into the harbor. We had a couple of campers & day hikers and about 14 INDIAN GUIDES with their fathers! Gad, you have never seen so much energy! A herd of them full-tilt charged the gang way upon departure! Ha! But, all-in-all, very well behaved & they had a ball. I spent almost the whole trip home swearing in 6 Jr. Rangers & helping them fill out the program booklet, and more of them will mail their explorer programs in. Rain On! It was a definite wake up call, with vivid documentary coverage of ice and snow depletions in Alaska and Norway, as well as during an expedition toward the North Pole: All during the last ten years. If you are not a skier, and you do not know who Warren Miller is, think Warren Miller is to ski adventure filming what Walt Disney is to filming cartoons. His films have drawn avid skiing audiences since the early 60s. Paul On Dec 6, 2012, at 10:25 AM, Kenneth A. You can link to the paper at: and to the video supplement at: http://rsbl.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/9/1/20120986/suppl/DC1 The full citation of the paper is: Goldbogen JA, Calambokidis J, Friedlaender AS, Francis J, DeRuiter SL, Stimpert AK, Falcone E, Southall BL. 2012. Underwater acrobatics by the world?s largest predator: 360? rolling manoeuvres by lunge-feeding blue whales. Biol Lett 9:20120986. http://dx.doi.org/10.1098/rsbl.2012.0986 and the abstract of the paper is given below. ABSTRACT: The extreme body size of blue whales requires a high-energy intake and therefore demands efficient foraging strategies. As an obligate lunge feeder on aggregations of small zooplankton, blue whales engulf a large volume of prey-laden water in a single, rapid gulp. The efficiency of this feeding mechanism is strongly dependent on the amount of prey that can be captured during each lunge, yet food resources tend to be patchily-distributed in both space and time. Here, we measured the three-dimensional kinematics and foraging behaviour of blue whales feeding on krill, using suction-cup attached multi-sensor tags. Our analyses revealed 360? rolling lunge-feeding manoeuvres that reorient the body and position the lower jaws so that a krill patch can be engulfed with the whale?s body inverted. We also recorded these rolling behaviours when whales were in a searching mode in between lunges, suggesting that this behavior also enables the whale to visually process the prey field and maximize foraging efficiency by surveying for the densest prey aggregations. These results reveal the complex manoeuvrability that is required for large rorqual whales to exploit prey patches and highlight the need to fully understand the three-dimensional interactions between predator and prey in the natural environment. Additionally, please see the following links to some of the media coverage of these new and intriguing findings about foraging behavior in blue whales. http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2012/11/video-rolling-in-the-deep.html http://www.nature.com/news/blue-whales-pirouette-for-food-1.11892 http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/04/science/acrobatic-blue-whales-can-sneak-up-on-krill.html http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/20509831 http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/journal/blue-whales-roll-360-degrees-to-feed-study-finds.htm http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/346683/title/Blue_whales?_diet_and_exercise_rolled_into_one http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/49987245/ns/technology_and_science-science/t/blue-whales-use-underwater-ballet-trick-their-prey/#.UMFTcqVOTdl http://blogs.smithsonianmag.com/smartnews/2012/11/sometimes-blue-whales-do-barrel-rolls-while-they-eat/ http://sciencefriday.com/segment/12/07/2012/blue-whale-barrel-roll-caught-on-camera.html Note: many of the above links include photos of blue whales but not all include the relevant permit information (as requested); all photos taken during the SOCAL-BRS project were obtained under NMFS permit #14534. -- Shauna Bingham NOAA's Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary 113 Harbor Way, Suite 150 Santa Barbara, CA 93109 805-884-1460 805-568-1582 (fax) http://channelislands.noaa.gov/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The lecture is presented by the Santa Barbara County Archaeological Society and admission is free. ? Here is what the the flyer reports: ? Largely known as expert sea mammal hunters, fishers, and shell fishers, the Island Chumash were adept at navigating and exploiting the marine and nearshore environments of the Channel Region.? However, local plant foods, and carbohydrates from geophytes in particular, would have been important in balancing the protein-rich marine diet.?? Ethnographic information indicates Blue Dicks were harvested in considerable amounts on the islands, and roasted in large communal roasting pits.? Excavations of the Diablo Valdez Bedrock Mortar Comples (SCRI-619/620), occupied from 5700 years ago through the Missionization (AD 1782) revealed numerous hearth clearing pit features, several living surfaces and postholes, a substantial midden accumulation, and a roasting pit feature measuring over a meter across.? Moreover, carbonized geophytes, most likely Blue Dicks corms, were recovered in large quantities from multiple strata, representing the most substantial recovery in southern California. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Even with a deeply cloudy sky, we had great viability and Inspiration Point and Cathedral Cove overlook were beautiful. The island is covered in a green quilt from the recent rains. We saw three peregrine falcons diving for prey. Larry Harris and I went out on a regular citizen science project we are a part of along with Shirley Johnson, John Kuizenga, Polly Blackburn and Kathleen Roos. We were lucky to have the Ph.D. Steve Schroeter, of UCSB with us who is a long time participant (from an admin standpoint) and has been involved for many years on the urchin settlement brush project at Anacapa Landing. This is a more complex project to explain, but it provides long-term information about the change in the species collected in the brushes and changes to the ocean environment, i.e., changes in temperature, salinity and acidification (or at least the effects there of). What was remarkable was being on island with Helen Fitting from the NPS and a colleague Chris (don't remember his last name) a Ph.D. candidate at UCSB who gave us a talk about our endemic island slender salamander found only on the northern four islands in the CINP. We also got to see several egg-laying females and their eggs. Helen said she and Chris are working together on a scientific paper, as no one has ever found or seen salamanders with eggs or laying eggs before. It was really a unique and great educational experience. Aaron from Channel Islands Restoration (CIR) is credited with the first-ever discovery of this amazing animal laying eggs. He discovered them during a restoration day recently on the island. Thank you Aaron. And, thanks to Helen and Chris for letting us in on such a great find. Helen said she will make information on the salamander paper available to David Begun for us when the project comes to fruition. In recent years, however, reports of whale songs occurring outside traditional breeding grounds have become more common. A new study may help explain why. Humpbacks sing for their supper -- or at least, they sing while they hunt for it. The research, published December 19 in PLoS ONE, uncovers the whales' little-understood acoustic behavior while foraging. It also reveals a previously unknown behavioral flexibility on their part that allows the endangered marine mammals to balance their need to feed continuously with the competing need to exhibit mating behaviors such as song displays. "They need to feed. They need to breed. So essentially, they multi-task," said study co-author Ari S. Friedlaender, research scientist at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment. "This suggests the widely held behavioral dichotomy of breeding-versus-feeding for this species is too simplistic." Researchers from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, the University of California-Santa Barbara and Duke tracked 10 humpback whales in coastal waters along the Western Antarctic Peninsula in May and June 2010. The peninsula's bays and fjords are important late-season feeding grounds where humpbacks feast on krill each austral autumn before migrating to warm-water calving grounds thousands of miles away. Using non-invasive multi-sensor tags that attach to the whales with suction cups, the researchers recorded the whales' underwater movements and vocalizations as they foraged. All 10 of the tags picked up the sounds of background songs, and in two cases, they recorded intense and continuous whale singing with a level of organization and structure approaching that of a typical breeding-ground mating display. The song bouts sometimes lasted close to an hour and in one case occurred even while sensors indicated the whale, or a close companion, was diving and lunging for food. Humpbacks sing most frequently during breeding season, but are known to sing on other occasions too, such as while escorting mother-calf pairs along migratory routes. Though the reasons they sing are still not thoroughly understood, one distinction is clear: Songs sung in breeding grounds are quite different in duration, phrase type and theme structure from those heard at other locations and times. "The fact that we heard mating displays being sung in late-season foraging grounds off the coast of Antarctica suggests humpback whale behavior may be more closely tied to the time of year than to physical locations. This may signify an ability to engage in breeding activities outside their traditional warm-water breeding grounds," said Douglas P. Nowacek, Repass-Rogers University Associate Professor of Conservation Technology at Duke's Nicholas School. As the region's climate warms, sea ice cover around the Western Antarctic Peninsula has thinned in recent years and the water stays open later in the foraging season, he explained. Whales are remaining there longer into austral autumn to feast on krill instead of heading off to warm-water breeding grounds, as many scientists previously believed. "Mating may now be taking place at higher latitudes," Nowacek said. "This merits further study." Alison K. Stimpert, research associate in oceanography at the Naval Postgraduate School, was lead author of the new study. Lindsey E. Peavey, a PhD Student at the University of California at Santa Barbara's Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, co-authored it with Stimpert, Friedlaender and Nowacek. Saw about 300 commons early, then 4 Dall's porpoises. About 2 miles north of the west end of Santa Cruz Is we found 2 mother/calf pairs of Orcas. In a few minutes, one of the adults had a sea lion in its jaws. It passed it off to the calves several times, perhaps teaching them how to hunt, before consuming it. The water was deep red. Several more orcas appeared. Then Capt Anthony saw our second large pod of about 200 common dolphins approaching. The ~9 killer whales took off at flank speed intercepting the leading edge of the dolphin pod, scattering it in many directions. At least 2 dolphin were captured and probably more, one clearly seen close to the boat with the dolphin crosswise in the jaws of an orca. The drama continued for an hour with more hunting lessons before we departed, thrilled but also somewhat emotionally exhausted. We moved to within 1/2 mile of the west end of Santa Cruz were we saw 2 gray whales heading south. A mile east of there, saw 9 Rissos dolphins up close, some almost entirely a ghostly white. It was like a day on the Serengeti where 35 years ago I saw a lion take down a wildebeest. Last month, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which governs shipping worldwide, announced it adopted three proposals deemed necessary to improve navigational safety and to reduce ship strikes on the approach to San Francisco Bay, the Santa Barbara Channel and the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Vessels in these areas also travel through NOAA?s Cordell Bank, Gulf of the Farallones and Channel Islands national marine sanctuaries where blue, humpback and fin whales feed and congregate. ?This is a win-win situation, backed by NOAA research, that allows for enhanced protection of endangered whales and natural resources while at the same time increasing maritime safety,? said William J. Douros, west coast regional director of NOAA?s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. ?We are pleased with the shipping industry and the IMO?s decision to support the proposed amendments.? ?The collaboration between NOAA and the Coast Guard in reviewing and modifying these vessel traffic separation schemes demonstrates the strong working relationship between our two agencies,? said Rear Admiral Karl Schultz, Eleventh Coast Guard district commander. ?The modifications to the traffic lanes balance the safe and efficient flow of commerce within and between our nation's ports, with NOAA's goal of reducing whale strikes from vessels." Slow-moving whales are highly vulnerable to ship strikes, since many of their feeding and migration areas overlap with shipping lanes. In 2007, four whales (all blue whales) were killed by confirmed or likely ship strikes in and around the Santa Barbara Channel. In 2010, five whales (two blue, one humpback, and two fin whales) were killed by confirmed or likely ship strikes in the San Francisco area and elsewhere along the north-central California coast. Extending the three lanes in the approach to San Francisco Bay is expected to reduce interactions between ships and whales within Cordell Bank and Gulf of the Farallones national marine sanctuaries. According to the IMO decision, the lane extensions will improve maritime safety in the area by keeping vessels on a dedicated route through prime fishing grounds, which will reduce interaction between fishing vessels and commercial ships. The proposed vessel lane changes in the Santa Barbara Channel and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary narrow the overall width of the existing lanes and shift the southbound lane one nautical mile north. This change will move vessels away from an area used by feeding blue and humpback whales. The vessel lane changes are anticipated to take effect in 2013. Blue, humpback and fin whales are protected by the Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act and National Marine Sanctuaries Act. In 2007, NOAA?s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries worked to shift shipping lanes in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, off the coast of Massachusetts. This modification now protects endangered whales in the sanctuary and has reduced the risk of ships striking whales by 81 percent. NOAA?s mission is to understand and predict changes in the Earth's environment, from the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun, and to conserve and manage our coastal and marine resources. I went out on the Thursday, December 27, Condor Express trip. Captain Mat was not very happy that he had no naturalists. Matt was on deck and Captain Dave in the galley. Mat gave his "it's going to be rough" talk but all 45 passengers came aboard. We turned west out of the harbor but immediately turned east after word came from a crew boat of a sighting of two humpbacks by the "H" platforms earlier in the day. We found two large feeding aggregations just south and a couple of miles southeast of Platform Henry. There were huge numbers of birds, mainly Brandt's Cormorants and Common Murres, but no humpbacks. There were three Minke Whales in one of the groups feeding actively with visible blows. We didn't stick around long because Mat wanted to find the humpbacks so we continued east. We went as far as offshore of the Ventura Fairgrounds and then turned towards shore before going back uphill. Unfortunately, the wind and swell picked up during our trip and the return was pretty rough. Not only did we not find the humpbacks, but we never ran into any gray whales and didn't see a single dolphin all day. There were high numbers of birds, although species diversity was low. The most remarkable was the fact that we saw over 1000 Common Murres. A single sighting of this species would have been news just a few years ago, now their numbers continue to increase exponentially. There were not as many Black-vented Shearwaters around as on recent trips. The complete list of birds seen on the trip is below; the harbor list is from a walk I took after the trip. Unfortunately, I did not separate sightings for VenCo, but the two large feeding aggregations were in Santa Barbara County, albeit close to the VenCo border, so most birds counted were in SBCo. 13 species Pacific Loon 175 Western Grebe 4 Black-vented Shearwater 105 Brandt's Cormorant 950 Brown Pelican 220 Heermann's Gull 100 Western Gull 200 California Gull 1 Forster's Tern 8 Royal Tern 1 Parasitic Jaeger 2 Common Murre 965 Rhinoceros Auklet 24 View this checklist online at http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12409304 This report was generated automatically by eBird v3 (http://ebird.org) Santa Barbara Harbor, Santa Barbara, US-CA Dec 27, 2012 2:35 PM - 5:05 PM Protocol: Traveling 2.0 mile(s) Comments: Walk from SEA Landing to the sand spit by the harbor entrance and then to Stearn's Wharf. 34 species (+1 other taxa) Bufflehead 20 Red-breasted Merganser 1 Common Loon 2 Pied-billed Grebe 4 Horned Grebe 10 Eared Grebe 5 Western Grebe 10 Western/Clark's Grebe 25 Double-crested Cormorant 100 Pelagic Cormorant 1 Brown Pelican 150 Great Blue Heron 2 Great Egret 2 Snowy Egret 1 American Coot 1 Black-bellied Plover 3 Killdeer 1 Spotted Sandpiper 2 Sanderling 16 Heermann's Gull 30 Mew Gull 4 Ring-billed Gull 6 Western Gull 200 California Gull 9 Herring Gull 1 Glaucous-winged Gull 1 Royal Tern 4 Black Skimmer 70 Eurasian Collared-Dove 4 American Crow 5 European Starling 2 American Pipit 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler 4 Townsend's Warbler 1 Great-tailed Grackle 4 View this checklist online at http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12409139 This report was generated automatically by eBird v3 (http://ebird.org) Bernardo Alps www.photocetus.com Whalephoto at earthlink.net 310.597.0449 P.O. Plastic bags distributed: zero! Several spouts noted in the vicinity; 2 Grays seen first, but then a pod of 6 proved to be more interesting. These were followed for a while as they fluked and cavorted a bit with each other. Technically, behaviors known as "whale hanky-panky". Leaving the notch, the Condor cruised to painted cave where entry was discouraged by washing machine-like surge and swell. Two more separate Gray spouts noted but not pursued en route to the Cave. No dolphins today, but really spectacular clouds and sky! Nice crowd from such places as Norway, Colorado, Japan, Dallas and Vandenburg Village. Thanks to Capt. Mat, Dave and Tasha for crewing! Both trips were almost full with passengers from Toronto Canada, China, Japan, Ireland, Italy, The Philippines, Iowa, Washington, Arkansas Southern California and other places near and far. The morning trip brought us about 500 common dolphins and quite a few California Sea Lions on the beaches on the Southeasten end of Anacapa. We found 3 gray whales on the south side of Anacapa. They gave passengers a great show with numerous spouts and tail flukes. The afternoon trip was much quieter as far as sightings...a rush of many sea lions from shore to water off Anacapa beaches and 2 grey whales, a very shy one out by Anacapa and another one about 4 miles off shore on the way back. The last one gave passengers a number of beautiful views of its spout and back, but no tails. Captain Frank and whale sighter Ricky Bobby did a terrific job of finding the whales and narrating the trip while Chris kept everyone fed in the galley. Our passengers enjoyed close looks at at least a dozen grays, with many more spouts all around us visible due to the spectacularly clear skies and ample visibility. It was so clear you could see all the way from Boney Mountain (western end of the Santa Monica Mtns) to Pt Conception, and all four Channel Islands in between. The first two whales were only 4 miles south of SB Harbor and were frolicing around, perhaps engaged in some mating or at least foreplay. Other whales were in groups of two also, and the high point of the trip was a breaching gray whale a bit distant from the boat, but framed by the majestic sea cliffs of the north west face of the island. Despite several large feeding aggregations of sea birds and sea lions, no dolphins were observed. I'll post the photos from today's trip sometime tomorrow before the Rose Bowl game. Captain Dave took nearly a full boat of 123 out to ESCI on this very beautiful last day of 2012. Visibility was forever, and the seas were calm. One hundred and ten got off at Scorpion, with 14 either camping or kayaking. I had 20 on my hike to Cavern Point, with folks heralding from Port Hueneme to Taiwan and India, all very interested and inquisitive about our CINP and CINMS. The islandscape was green, and the cool, clear air was still. We saw healthy fox galore, migrating Grays close in at Cavern Point, and friendly escorting Ravens. A young middle school brother and sister were especially interested in the Chumash his-herstory and the chert connection to their once thriving culture everywhere we could see. It was a great final day of 2012 on the island! Natalie Swan handled a busy visitor's center, even without power. When Capt Dave took the Island Adventure to Prisoner's Harbor, crew member extraordinary stayed at Scorpion to help with hike-interp with families that ad very young children with them. My group was the antsy-pantsy bunch. The trip over to the island was a treat for all, as well. Capt. Dave gave us all a long look at 4 Gray whales slowly traveling east practically within the one nautical mile boundary of the Park, and we had playful Common Dolphin play with us at many locales after half way out. Moving on to 2013! Paul Petrich
