I am sorry to have missed the showing at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. However, I wanted to also take this opportunity to share with you a SBIFF film I saw late last week called *Minds in the Water*. This film is the story of one surfer's international journey to help protect dolphins, whales and their ocean environment. It is 90 minutes long and will play again at the Metro 4 theater on Saturday, Feb. 4. I was surprised by the local resources that were featured in this film. For example, Wishtoyo, the Chumash Discovery Village in Malibu is featured with Mati Waiya retelling the story of the Rainbow Bridge. It also has a small feature on local artist Peggy Oki and her origami whales project that documents how many whales have been killed worldwide (over 36,000) since the moratorium on whaling went into effect in 1986. Also, just a reminder about Bob Talbot's film, *Otter 501* will make its world premiere on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 4 pm at Metro 4 theaters. It will also show on Feb. 4 at 8 am and Feb. 5 at 2 pm both at the Metro 4 theaters. Enjoy! As we approached mid-channel the wind ratcheted up, resulting in a short period swell off the starboard beam and a few bilious passengers. Here we also encountered a group of 200 Common Dolphin working their way up (west) the SB Channel. Skipper Dave turned the boat and all aboard had good view of Commons bow riding, jumping and darting hither and fro, while a large contingent (10%) of youngsters did an admirable job of keeping pace with the adults. As we approached SCI in the area of Arch Rock we encountered a group of 30 Risso?s, which thanks to Capt. Dave adapt driving, the sun behind us, we had great looks at them. Their colors ran the gamut from almost totally white, to dark with few teeth marks. Clear skies and clear water gave them a vibrancy and the illusion of being closer than they actually were. At this point half of the group of 17 passengers were experiencing the effects of bumpy seas and we headed east, down swell, about I/2 to l mile off the north face of SCI in search of Gray?s. The Island was looking lush with coreopsis beginning to bloom and potreros (sp?) as green as watered, cultivated fields. We searched for some time, but not until we were near Potato Bay did we discover the blow of one very shy juvenile Gray traveling east by him/herself. We followed for thirty minutes and I did manage three fluke shots for what was my total PID production for the day. We continued on to the east end of SC (off San Pedro Point) and that was our point of return to SB. The crew of, Capt. Dave, Dennis and Matt were on top of their game, as usual and in spite of the some rocking and rolling it was a great trip! Talked with passengers from England, the Bay Area and Las Vegas and many of whom asked great questions during the pre-trip briefing. We have lost a valued member of our SBIFF family last night. Filmmaker, underwater cinematographer and adventurist Mike DeGruy died last night in a helicopter crash off the coast of Australia while scouting locations for an upcoming project. Mike, who curated the Reel Nature sidebar and was the force behind Field Trip to the Movies, had an incredible sense of adventure. He loved his work, he was full of life. He traveled the world and his passionate affection for all things outdoors was infectious and only eclipsed by his love and dedication to his wife, Mimi, and his children. And he loved sharing his passion with this festival. We've suffered a tremendous loss, but he would want us to forge ahead. He sent a message yesterday asking how everything was going and was so excited, saying "I can't wait to tell you about this little adventure".thank you, Mike, you've been an inspiration to us all. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kevin Bailey" To: "RAIN LIST email list" Sent: Saturday, February 04, 2012 11:43 AM Subject: [CINC] Mike deGruy We are at SBIFF and it was announced that Mike died in a helicopter crash early this morning. The Santa Barbara Public Works Dept. approved on Monday an initiative that allows residents to dispose of plastic bags in the Blue Curbside containers already used for other recycled items. Waste Management and MarBorg Industries will begin collecting and recycling the bags as part of the county's latest measure to minimize the negative environmental impact of the bags that escape that escape into the environment or get stuck in landfills. New capabilities have been embraced by the trash hauling companies, that can now make the processing of he bags profitable. At most only 9% go these bags previously got recycled via the drop-off at grocery store method. I could not find mention of this in our local community newspaper today. Volunteer and engineer extraordinaire Don Mills, created the designs and plans. The crew did an exemplary job of raising the tower/windmill into place. Stacy Kaye-Carr was on island to film the process and Ann Huston, Chief of Cultural History was here as well. The team of Sterling, Rachel, Duck and Murray were amazing. Depart SCI 3:30pm A total of less than forty (nps employees, campers and visitors) aboard the trip to Scorpion and Prisoners. A pretty bumpy ride with swells (4-8ft), the wind picked up dramatically (15+ mph) as we moved into the channel; and continued for the day. The wind chop combined with swell had Dave putting on the brakes as we came up on some of the occasional 10-12 ft swells. It was exceptional light and visibility steaming to the islands and Cabrillo Arch was well defined on Anacapa Is, east end. With the stiff, unrelenting ocean breeze on the island from the vc I noticed the wind creating continuous, pulsing waves over the tall grasses along the canyon walls. I was able to get a quick look at the recently erected windmill; it's a fine addition to the history of the ranching community. Kathy Van Slyke provided the orientation for 30 visitors and led the hike to Cavern Pt for 14. In spite of the short stay of about 2.5 hours, 6 hikers were able to make the trip to Potato Harbor. We noticed no serious side effects from mal de mer although most of us appreciated having our feet on terra firma. Some large flocks of Scoters in the waves as we left Scorpion; several Western Grebes, Pelicans and Cormorants as we approached the mainland; and a male, Ca Sea Lion on the red, Ventura Harbor entrance buoy was our sole sea mammal sighting. The passengers included locals and families from Indiana and Vancouver, Canada. They were pleased with their experience and complimented us on the added knowledge to their island visit. The abstract about the game is below and the idea was initiated through the Santa Monica Mountains NRA. Anyone interested in being a playtester should email Tim H..at unnumberedt at gmail.com Note that Tim welcomes friends or family who would be interested. *- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - * *Abstract: * Plants and Fire is a card game based on the ecology of Southern California, and designed in the style of collectible card games such as Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pok?mon, or Magic: The Gathering. The game is a fun and interactive context in which players can learn about the real ecology of SoCal. Game cards represent real plants, places, and people. Through exposure to the cards, players will learn factual information about these real entities. More importantly, the rules and relationships within the game model the real ecology of SoCal shrublands. By playing the game, players will learn about ecological issues affecting SoCal.** *Website:* https://sites.google.com/site/samoplantsandfire/ *Target audience:* 12 years (7th grade) and up *Biological Themes*: - Diversity - Native plant communities tend to be more diverse than nonnative plant communities, having more different types of species than the nonnative communities. - Native plant species are far more diverse in shape, size, and behavior, than invasive plant species. - Fire - Fire may be good, bad, or neutral. - Different plant species respond to fire in different ways. - The amount of time between successive fires plays a part in determining the effect of fire (good, bad, or neutral). - Plant Identification - This game contains fifteen different plant species that live in Southern California. Players will learn a few basic facts about each. - Invasive plants - Invasive plants tend to be disturbance-loving, and can out-compete native species when disturbances (such as fire) become unnaturally frequent. - Natural Events - Players will learn about five different types of natural events that commonly affect Southern California: fire, El Ni?o, La Ni?a, earthquakes, and wind. - Importance of Human Choices - Human actions have big effects on the environment. These can be positive (e.g. restoration efforts) or negative (e.g. careless fires). *Affect:* - Fun - This is an educational game, but it's not one of *those* educational games, the ones that are unfun, and give a bad name to learning. Rather, it combines both fun and learning, utilizing a principle of attraction rather than one of promotion. Those who play the game will be more interested in thinking, learning, nature, and the environment. - All in-game locations are real places. The production version of the game will include a set of road and trail maps to those places. These maps will encourage players to visit the places in person, and see what the game is really all about. - Interaction - The design of the game strongly encourages interaction among players. Players may cooperate, compete, or any combination of the two. The tone of a game will depend on the individuals involved. - If a group of players is particularly aggressive, favoring offence over defence, it is possible to create a wasteland in which it is impossible for anyone to win. *Critical Thinking Skills:* - Systems thinking - It's all connected, just like real life. Every choice has clear and intuitive consequences for plants, lands, and players. -- Shauna Bingham Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary 113 Harbor Way, Suite 150 Santa Barbara, CA 93109 805-884-1460 805-568-1582 (fax) http://channelislands.noaa.gov/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Captain Mike took the Islander out to Santa Cruz with a full load of 123 passengers today. Thirty kayakers and as many campers got off at Scorpion, along with about 35 day hikers. The remaining passengers were primarily a burial at sea party that had their memorial near Prisoner's Harbor. The Island Adventure, active today as a whale watch boat, dropped of more day hikers within an hour after the Islander did. Karen and David Telleen-Lawton, both volunteering as overnighters, handled them. My 12 hikers to Cavern Point included two UCSB Grad students from South Korea ( my guests ) and a tourist from India. We also had a UC Santa Cruz Grad student from Bulgaria, who accepted and made the challenge to hike to Montan'non Ridge, as we veered up toward Cavern Point. Potato Harbor ended up a destination for most of the party with me. There we met a bunch of people from the 2nd boat. It was in the open terrain east and west of Cavern Point where we saw a total of three separate fox hunting down mice, totally oblivious to our presence. Red Tailed Hawks and Ravens soared over head, as did graceful Pelicans below the cliffs; and all the while the song of the unseen Meadowlarks was heard in the background. Everyone, including all of our international visitors, totally enjoyed the day to the max! The trip back to Ventura was calm, we saw playful common dolphin, and the sunset was beautiful. UCSB History Ph.d candidate Ken Hough gave an outstanding historical account of the period as reflected specifically through events leading up to the shelling of the Goleta Ellwood Oil Pier facility by a Japanese submarine. Mr. Hough compared the reaction by the America people to that attack on February 23, 1942 to be as consequential as the reaction that occurred to the Santa Barbara Oil Spill 27 years later. Though physical damage was minimal, the psychological and emotional effect was emense: no small part due to Japanese propaganda at home about the attack ( It was made during President FDR's radio address to the nation). Also, Mr. Hough clearly describes how people reacted, once becoming aware of the inept preparations in place to avoid more damaging attacks along our coastline. Ken Hough will give the presentation again on March 11th at Rancho La Patera & Stow House, Goleta. Tickets: 681-7216 / GoletaHistory.org Both the S. B. Sea conditions were calm this afternoon. Capt. Dave decided to head for SCI since we did not see whales on the rigg line on the morning trip.We found a lone grey moving east at about three knots. Its fluke was round, having lost the pointed tips from each side. It would breath two or three times and dive for three to four minutes like clock work.We followed past San Pedro point, backed off and let the Island Adventure take over the watch. The tour of AI's south was rich. There were hundreds of sea lions - more than I've ever seen before - hauled out on the south facing beaches west of Arch Rock.We moved to the east end and noted a hugh bull up on one of the rocks. It's massive neck and size had to be that of a Stellar sea lion. It also was quite evasive, going directly into the water as we moved past.A few miles from Ventura Harbor we came upon a pod of common dolphins that were not interested in following the boat. Thanks to Capt. Several fox sightings in the morning from Cavern Point trail and in the upper campground. Foxes were a continuous presence--two or three--in the ranch area and between the picnic tables and the pier. We didn't catch up with the morning whale, but had a great trip up the backside of Anacapa, through the gap and continued west for a bit in search of the elusive whales. We were about to give up and return to port when Andrea spotted spouts further west. What a fantastic show! We at first encountered two whales who were feeding, spending long periods of time under water. Next we found three more. Two actually seemed to be swimming in sync, surfacing together, blowing together and diving together. Jimmy stopped the boat because they were so close to the boat. FANTASTIC! It was calm but overcast, visibility about 8 miles. We followed a pair of relaxed, slow moving whales for quite a while; passengers got many good fluke shots. We could see blows and flukes a little farther away. Saw 2 spy hops and a breach in the distance. We moved to get a better view of one whale that was rolling and raising its flippers. It was rolling through a field of floating kelp, catching the stems of kelp on its head and flippers. One, lone sea lion was playing in the kelp with it. After a short time the whale approached the boat. It passed under the boat several times, floated along side the boat three times and stuck its head up next to the boat twice, looking at us and exhaling whale breath and steam on the passengers. It was the most fantastic sighting of a humpback I have experienced in the ten years I've been going out. I expect IPCO will be posting pictures of this experience. PM trip: Think it was the same 7 whales but in two groups. 12 passengers, mostly local with nice cameras. Calm seas but fog had developed, visibility in places only about ? mile. The whales were apparently feeding at a depth. They were coming up all around us but just taking one or two breaths and diving again. This behavior and the fog made it difficult to get good photos. A pod of 200 common dolphins joined us for a short time. CINC Naturalist Tom Boyd, Captain Jimmy, and mates Luke and Dani added to the education and enjoyment. We ventured towards where humpbacks had just been seen sighted on the AM trip& didnt encounter any ( not right away ) but instead were delighted by the sight of those Black dorsal fins moving swiftly through the water , travelling like a pack of wolves through the sea, Yes, 5 Beautiful Orcas all lined up in formation & as if that was not wonderful enough , there was a Baby Orca amongst them . Capt. Matt kept the boat moving with them until everyone had their fill of Killer whales & it was time to head off to look for Humpbacks . Spouts off in the distance kept the crowd cheering & excited & just as soon as we pulled into the Humpbacks location a Full Breach in the distance while others were doing tail lobs & pec slaps. I believe the count was 4-5 in close vicintiy with other spouts off in the distance. Suddenly one humpback was heading straight toward the boat & again another Breach !! The passengers went wild. Tail flukes, lobs, pec slaps & breaches what more could we want. All the activity of the whales & moving from side to side on the boat kept the passengers minds off how actually chilly it was . . Just as we were turning to head for home a lone humpback surfaced near the boat , gave a few breaths & gave us the Beautiful humpback tail fluke .. a lasting memory burned into the memory of hearts, minds & cameras. After chasing the Orcas for a while we ran into 3 Humpbacks playing in kelp. The afternoon trip was also a great one.? The Island Packers boat was mugged by three Humpbacks for about 45 mins.? Spy hoping, fluking, going underneath the boat.? The passenger of 78 really enjoyed the show. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: I had the opportunity to escort 14 visitors for a half day trip to Santa Rosa yesterday. The marine layer hindered the visibility, but they still got good views of Anacapa and Santa Cruz on the way over. The wildflowers on the island are probably near their peak, but with the reduced rain this year, not quite as brilliant as the last two years. None the less, yarrow, California poppy, paintbrush, Island monkey flower, Morning glory and blue dicks were all in bloom. The two highlights of the trip were seeing two island foxes as we hiked towards the ranch. While foxes are ?no big deal? on Santa Cruz, the fox recovery on Rosa hasn?t been nearly as dramatic and the foxes there aren?t as used to humans, so they tend to be much more elusive. The visitors were very excited to see a pair of only 350 or so in the world. The second highlight was spotting a juvenile bald eagle soaring along the coast towards the ranch. We were at the top of the Torrey pines trail when the eagle was spotted. It was being harassed by a Red tailed hawk. As the eagle did its acrobatics to allude the hawk, we could see the mottled topside and what I thought looked like a head beginning to turn white. Also evident were the two blue wing tags indicative of a Northern island born eagle. Unfortunately I couldn?t read the tag numbers to get a positive ID on the bird. Every day spent on the islands is a special day, but this one especially so. Joel... -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The movie "Big Miracle" starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski continues its run in movie theaters http://www.everybodyloveswhales.com/. It is a fun and entertaining feature, if you can overlook some pretty big inaccuracies like the vocalizations of the animals and especially the fact that the three whales are portrayed as a father, mother and baby. The bottom line is that, just like the true events on which it is based, the movie is helping to raise awareness about gray whales and the marine environment in general. Here are links to three resources that give some background about the actual rescue that took place in 1988. The first is a blog by Alaska photographer Bill Hess. He lives among the Inupiat and is very sensitive to their culture and traditions. Hess is the author of an amazing book about the bowhead hunt titled "The Gift of the Whale" (http://digitaljournalist.org/issue0002/bhintro.htm). He was present throughout the events and has written about them quite extensively in his blog. It is a fascinating read because he adds a lot of detail and background and his photos are not only amazing but they tell the story in their own way. It brought back vivid memories for me, without all the electronic media as today, I would eat lunch in my car to catch the updates on radio and dash home to watch the TV coverage. It was a time for people uniting to save creatures that they had no previous connection with. And, brought in people like the whaling natives and an oilman that would otherwise have very opposing views about saving three whales. I agree that it raises awareness and it is akin to our own local stories for the recovery of the island fox and bald eagles. The unity of man for a single purchase is a wonderful thing. A Couple of each, Western Gull, Cormorant, and hand full of Brown Pelicans. Except, in the morning, a huge flock of Western Grebes very shortly out of Channel Islands Harbor, sitting on the water, just hanging out as if awaiting orders for the next event. Easily 1000 plus as we had to move through them to get beyond. An interesting sight in itself. How many times can we say this is the best we WW run have seen, and then have it topped on our next run, or perhaps a couple down the line?? Saturday was one of those days. In the AM, ? Out of the harbor about a half an hour and we came across the Commons, not quite a "mega pod" but a very large pod even so, and much to the delight of the 17 folks coming out for whales. Capt. Jason did some turns to entertain both the dolphins and our contemporary whalers. As is the usual case, the Dolphin took to the wakes of the Vanguard, like bears to honey, and the show was on. Two people were so satisfied, that, that was enough to justify the Vangurd's fare. However, we were not done. The Condor, Range 85 and Inland Adventure were hanging out with three Humpbacks at the Platform line and we were heading out to see them. Coming in slowly, the Condor had to break off and head back, giving us some room to ease on in with the rest of the group. Three Humpbacks were definitely entertaining the Ranger, then three more came up just before us about 200 yard off. So we shut down to an idle to wait and see. Not long to wait, these three were very curious about us and came right over to check US out. Who was watching who?? They cruised right up to our starboard side and seeminly pause before moving around the stern and then one did a diving turn back under the boat and out again on the starboard side. By this time Ranger had to head out and the three there, came over to join in the fun here. Soon we were surrounded by very curious and playful Humpbacks. Then they moved off just a bit, only to turn and come back to our stern, split to both sides. Then we had another Hump back show up from who knows where, so 7 in the group. Well, with this close encounter, everyone got the Whale Breath treatment, on several occasions, as we had suggested we might if we saw some whales. They did not disappoint. The playfulness went on for about an hour or more, largely off our starboard but she on the port. They would bunch up, roll and shallow dive seemingly over and under one another, not twenty five feet away. Then they started trumpeting, several times, ? and in the midst of all this commotion one began to sing, YES you got it, SINGING the whale song. I've only heard that, LIVE, once before. What a treat. What an amazing treat!! The Vanguard was comprehensively and thoroughly mugged. We told the folks, there would be no extra charge for the extensive show. On the PM run, ... So the afternoon trip, with about twenty plus folks, was sure to be something far less, as it often is with these whales, ? (heh, heh) Not so.!! No dolphins sighted, as we heard there were Orca in the Channel, so maybe they got the word and bugged out. Folks were hoping to see the Orca, now that we knew they were nearby. Yet, it would be a trade off, Orca or other cetacea. We don't see them together unless we have Orca going after one of them, so the others will usually move off. But we were, betting that our playful 7 just might be hanging out in the same area and we might be able to catch up to them once again. At first it was looking a bit grim, no sightings as we approach the area. Continuing on, and on, ? no whales. Then, up popped two Humpbacks moving quite steadily, right along side of us with the same heading about 200 yards off our port side. They seemed to be on a mission. No diving, just steady moving, blowing as they surfaced, yet not much under water. So we kept pace with them, slowly closing for better looks, or was it they, closing toward us?? Then up popped two more, then a third and then a forth, so we now had six, as the fast movers joined in the gathering. They were definitely interested in us. We had to shut down as they came right over and started the "same ol' stuff" of the AM trip. DARN!! They went under us and around us, checking us out as if they were the TSA. They really wanted to know everything about us. One came up perpendicular to the port side, slowly surfaced, rostrum out of, yet parallel with the water, and hung there for about a minute or two, just looking us over. Mean while the others were wanting to know what we had in the trunk, checking out the stern very, very thoroughly, under and around it, two or three times. Then the trumpeting began again, just a few blasts, but enough to satisfy the folks with a slight start, as what was that? No singing this time, but the whale breath treatment was generously offered for all to appreciate. And appreciate they did. Then one came around, full length, along the port side and drifted slowly to the surface, yet not quite, just about a foot under water, stroking the Vanguard with its' pectoral, as it gradually move forward and down. In the very clear waters of the Channel, every one got a full on, crystal clear view of the entire live whale, in full detail, as it scoped out the boat, tactilely, as well as visually. Amazing, ? just amazing!! It was getting late and these guys did not let up, as the sun was getting low and began to glisten off the water, this crowd of Humpbacks moved right into the glint on our starboard side, in threes and fours, with beautifully coordinated slow sequential and pairs diving, flukes up all. The cameras were humming to say the least, then, ? and all day. Gradually they began to depart, yet still playing with one another as they slowly headed out. Now this was what was happening in the water. On the boat, crew member Danniel's eight year old daughter, Kaija, was working on a science project for her school class, trying to video Dolphins underwater. She had a small digital camera, encased in an underwater camera case and they tied and duct taped it to the long pole of the line hook and held it under the water when we came across the dolphins. Pretty cool. Then they saw me filling out the sighting report sheet and asked if I would teach, Kaija, how to fill out one of her own to go along with her project. So we sat down and went through all the little boxes, talked about each one, what we had seen and began to fill it out. Soon, Kaija, had her own sighting report sheet all prepared and ready to go. Very close to the end of the first trip, Kaija and I sat down and had our lunches together, she with her ham and cheese, and me with my home made burger, and some assistance from Kaija, in adding in the lettuce, tomato and onions. It was nice. Then she smiled at me, ? I took it as in approval. So we had folks from, Sweden, Camarillo, Bakersfield, Port Hueneme, Tennessee, Indiana, and India, enjoying the two runs at the very able hands of Captan Jason, crew Danniel and Joel. Yours truly, was the solo Naturalist on these two runs, another fantastic day on the water to put at the top of the list. The photo of Mrs. Hyder shooting an Elephant Seal on display in the Santa Barbara Island's visitor center is actually a photo from Marla Daily's book taken on Guadalupe Island during that hunt for the University of California. The Hyder's, who lived on Santa Barbara Island during those years, and who travelled between all the Channel Islands for years, never saw an Elephant Seal on any of the Channel Islands. However, they did take one or two alive to the very popular ocean front amusement park in Long Beach and put them on display there for profit. I just got the photos downloaded from the CX and provided them to Alisa Schulman-Janiger to see if she could ID any of them. Her response is below, and it's pretty interesting. If you want to see the photos, you can click on the links at the bottom to view or download. I will leave them there for about a month before I delete them.
