Below is the official statement SBIFF sent out to the press.
We have lost a valued member of our SBIFF family last night. Filmmaker,
underwater cinematographer and adventurist Mike DeGruy died last night in a
helicopter crash off the coast of Australia while scouting locations for an
upcoming project. Mike, who curated the Reel Nature sidebar and was the
force behind Field Trip to the Movies, had an incredible sense of adventure.
He loved his work, he was full of life. He traveled the world and his
passionate affection for all things outdoors was infectious and only
eclipsed by his love and dedication to his wife, Mimi, and his children.
And he loved sharing his passion with this festival. We've suffered a
tremendous loss, but he would want us to forge ahead. He sent a message
yesterday asking how everything was going and was so excited, saying "I can't
wait to tell you about this little adventure".thank you, Mike, you've been
an inspiration to us all.

We are at SBIFF and it was announced that Mike died in a helicopter crash
early this morning. Very sad news!
The local and legendary filmmaker of the ocean was on location somewhere
that has yet to be announced. We heard he was on location when we saw the
Frozen Planet at SBIFF.
