Good News Ocean People!
The UCSB's Daily Nexus headline today was "County Passes Program to Increase Plastic Recycling"! The accompanying photo depicts a sea turtle struggling with a plastic bag in its mouth and highlights the fact that the new program hopes to reduce the harmful effects of plastic bags on the environment.
The Santa Barbara Public Works Dept. approved on Monday an initiative that allows residents to dispose of plastic bags in the Blue Curbside containers already used for other recycled items. Waste Management and MarBorg Industries will begin collecting and recycling the bags as part of the county's latest measure to minimize the negative environmental impact of the bags that escape that escape into the environment or get stuck in landfills. New capabilities have been embraced by the trash hauling companies, that can now make the processing of he bags profitable. At most only 9% go these bags previously got recycled via the drop-off at grocery store method.
I could not find mention of this in our local community newspaper today. Paul
