Ocean People,
The fact that our Santa Barbara Channel was a WWII war zone during the weeks immediately following Pearl Harbor was remembered yesterday by the Goleta Valley Historical Society. UCSB History Ph.d candidate Ken Hough gave an outstanding historical account of the period as reflected specifically through events leading up to the shelling of the Goleta Ellwood Oil Pier facility by a Japanese submarine. Mr. Hough compared the reaction by the America people to that attack on February 23, 1942 to be as consequential as the reaction that occurred to the Santa Barbara Oil Spill 27 years later. Though physical damage was minimal, the psychological and emotional effect was emense: no small part due to Japanese propaganda at home about the attack ( It was made during President FDR's radio address to the nation). Also, Mr. Hough clearly describes how people reacted, once becoming aware of the inept preparations in place to avoid more damaging attacks along our coastline. Ken Hough will give the presentation again on March 11th at Rancho La Patera & Stow House, Goleta. Tickets: 681-7216 / GoletaHistory.org
Both the S. B. Independent and Venoco.Inc are supporting the GVHS in presenting this lecture and exhibit. Other CINC in attendance: Tara Brown and Vic Cox. Happy President's day. Paul Petrich
