Thanks Marty,
Of related interest, according to Buster Hyder ( as quoted in Marla Daily's book on Santa Barbara Island ), the Hyder family was sent down to Guadalupe Island by the University of California in 1916 to kill and bring back remains of a couple ( or a few ) Elephant Seals for the same reason the Smithsonian sent scientist there, as described by Brent Stewart. Buster said they feared the species was near extinction, and that…" the bones of the ones we killed are in Berkeley." The photo of Mrs. Hyder shooting an Elephant Seal on display in the Santa Barbara Island's visitor center is actually a photo from Marla Daily's book taken on Guadalupe Island during that hunt for the University of California. The Hyder's, who lived on Santa Barbara Island during those years, and who travelled between all the Channel Islands for years, never saw an Elephant Seal on any of the Channel Islands. However, they did take one or two alive to the very popular ocean front amusement park in Long Beach and put them on display there for profit. Paul
